Liz Religion has been the cause of wars, conflict, stress, violence, segregation, persecution, and terrorism.

Religion has also been the goodness and hope that has kept us living and hopeful through all those awful times.

Debate away!

9/11

The people who did that, did it because their Holy Book and their God said that they would get 72 virgins as a prize in Heaven if they blow themselves up.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

i think that the world may not be good with or without religion. it has cause many terrible things to happen, but it still we all that believe in God or even in Muhammed need someone to let us know that their is hope and they will always be there for you.

"but it still we all that believe in God or even in Muhammed need someone to let us know that their is hope and they will always be there for you."

Family and friends can do that without telling you to blow yourself up. And you can rely on yourself. You don't need someone looking after you.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

well,i dont fully agree. say if you are drunk and you are about to commit sucide God will protect you and hopefully keep you from taking your own life.

message 6: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
And, how many times has that happened, exactly? How many suicide bombers have turned themselves in? How many have given up their delusion of a Heaven for the lives of people on Earth?

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

most of the sucide bombers do not worship God they are under the Muhammed. who tells them to kill themselves and may other people along with them.

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
"worship God they are under the Muhammed."

You obviously have not studied Islam. Muhammad was a prophet, not God, per se. Allah is God.

"who tells them to kill themselves and may other people along with them"

The Qur'ran and the Bible share a very large amount of people and ideas. Very similar, as well as the Torah. Practically the same book, except for a couple of things.

Im sorry, but this is wrong. The Quran never says anything supporting Jihad. Suicide in the face of Allah means eternal damnation.
The men that supposedly did 9/11, were most likely poor young boys that can easily be manipulated by large terrorist groups, with the promise of virgins.

Jessica and Lauren, even though i am Agnostic i grew up studying Islam, and still have to pray during Ramadan, so listening you two talk about things that are so completely untrue is kind of pissing me off.

we believe that the Prophet Mohhamed was the last of Alah's prophets. We do not worship him. He is liek teh Jesus to islam, except he never claimed to be gods son. he brought the word of Allah to teh people of Mecca and Medina. HeNever said ANYTHING in the Quran about supporting Jihad.
The Prophet Muhhamed said that by committing suicide, you were defiying Allah, showing that you have no faith in him, which would result in punishment in the afterlife.

People say that Jihad is a pillar is islam, when it really isn't. The quran never justifies it, and i have the five pillars open right next to me.

Faith in one god
Prayer
Charity
Visiting Mecca at least once in your lifetime.

Those are the pillars of Islam. Suicide is HARAM or illegal in Islam. You go to hell if you kill yourself according to the Quran, and please PLEASE get your facts straight guys.

message 10: by Liz (new)

Liz Chandani is so right you guys. Get the facts right.

Go Chandani! You really know what you are talking about.

"Quran"

I never said Qur'ran. I said Holy Book. That could be different things. And I never specified Islam.

"we believe that the Prophet Mohhamed was the last of Alah's prophets. We do not worship him."

As I said.

message 13: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments They aren't two separate things though. The islamic Holy book is the Quran.

message 14: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
I never said Islam, so how could I mean Qur'ran?

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments "The people who did that, did it because their Holy Book and their God said that they would get 72 virgins as a prize in Heaven if they blow themselves up."
Um if im not mistaken you are reffering to the Jihad muslims that did 9/11 right?

message 16: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
There is a brain-washing group in the Middle East over there that does teach that stuff, but it's not the same as mainstream Islam, is it not?

message 17: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
"Jihad muslims"

They probably never read all of the Qur'ran. They were told what to believe by other people.

http://www.time.com/time/world/articl...

He was told what to believe.

message 18: by Chandani (new)

Chandani (milkduds920) | 6408 comments No its not. But you said that their holy book (which would be the Quran seeing as you are reffering to Muslims) told them to commit suicide. I was saying taht this was incorrect. I was also talkign to Jessica who said somethign about Muhhammed talling us to kill ourselves.

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
I was saying that people are being told stuff, that isn't really true. As in that article. Which is causing them to do these things.

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod
" That raised the question what he knew about Islam. When I asked he said he'd read the Quran. I asked it him if he understood it. He shook his head. It was then it became apparent his education went no farther than the madrassa—he was taught to recite the Quran in Arabic but did not understand a word. Other than what he was told.

And this is where the Taliban came in. Spotting him in the village mosque, they invited him to attend what can only be called an indoctrination course in Waziristan. There he was taught that suicide bombers go directly to heaven, where they're met by virgins and lush gardens. Farhad was also taught that any Muslim working with the Americans in Afghanistan was no longer a Muslim, but a "munafiq," a pretend Muslim. It was written in the Quran, Farhad was assured.

Even I, who have tried to get a grip on Muslim suicide bombing, was stunned by the depth of the brainwashing. I'd never seen anything like it."

People are being lied to.

message 21: by Riley (new)

Riley (booksarecool) People have always been lied to.

I think religion is a good thing, just not the way people are teaching it and interpreting it. For example, the terrorists you are talking about. Or the Spanish Catholics who told the people of the church that if they didn't pay them they would go to Hell.
Or that poor little girl, who, in second grade, was told she was going to go to Hell because she was not baptized(ME!). Some people ignore some of the rules, but practice others freely. Many people refuse to see the bad in their religion and practice it anyway.

So: If you interpret and teach your religion the right way, Good. If you don't, Bad.

message 22: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (djinni) | 7365 comments Mod

Okay, sorry i was confused!! I though that you were implying that the Quran supported suicide, and was just trying to clear that up? Sorry sorry!

But jessica you should get your facts straight about Islam before you say things about it. Its a teensie bit insulting.

It's cool. :) It wasn't the most clearly-typed thought I've had.

"It'd be fine if people kept it in the privacy of their homes, and never brought it onto others. "

Unfortunately, the ideas they teach require others to unwillingly participate.

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

i think it is better with it because in my mind i believe that religion keeps some people from doing wrong things. in my case i stick to the rules because i want to please my god. so i think with out religion most people would just stop caring.

"in my case i stick to the rules because i want to please my god. so i think with out religion most people would just stop caring."

If that is true, why is 15% of the population non-theist but the population in jail is 1%? And, if you had no god, you would just become a heartless monster, because you don't have the threat of hell hanging over you? So you're only being good to get into Heaven, and not being good just for the sake of being a good person?

You extend the logic. I can't help it if you don't like the outcome of following the idea to it's conclusion.

just let her do what she wants Lauren. it is her choice if she wants to stick to the rules.

Did you know that 17% of people in jail are christian? While only like .02% are atheist.

every body has those days if you don't believe me listen to hannah freakin montanas song...

message 45: by The New Maria (new)

The New Maria (emeraldmaria) | 1950 comments That people have morals without God. So saying the world would be a pit full of hatred and murder is idiotic and uneducated. According to the jail population, the odds are balanced more towards the atheists. Christians commit more crime.

message 46: by [deleted user] (new)

exactly,and your point is Maria?

The only result of pleasing God is getting into Heaven. That is basically the only point. I'm saying what you refuse to let yourself think.

"1730387 every body has those days if you don't believe me listen to hannah freakin montanas song... "

wtf

"1730387 and your point is "

Atheist are more moral even then theists. That's right, I went there.
