With all the back and forth between Lee and David I suddenly got confused what group this was..lol.

Anyways I finished up Downbelow Station over the weekend (my review) and I'll be starting up The Once and Future King this weekend after my weekly reading of Deadhouse Gates

I loved the first and the second (despite the slow start). I can't see how this is going to wrap up which I will take as a good sign and a compliment to Sanderson's writing skills.

Kristina | 588 comments I'm almost done with Mistborn: The Final Empire, and I'm loving it. Part of me will be glad when its done though-cuz I can't stop and I really need to get more sleep at night :P

Love Victorian culture...geometry...not so much

message 106: by Lee (new)

Lee (kiwifirst) LOL i thought exactly the same thing when I saw that.

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) | 778 comments I finished up Glamour in Glass and Blood Oranges, both of which were somewhat disappointing.

Next up is Fade to Black, which has a pretty cool blend of magic, tech, dystopia and noir so far.

I like the beauty there is in geometry, seeing it if you like, but not doing geometry...then again if I have to choose between statistics and geometry I will take the latest any day of the week

Aw, was thinking of giving Blood Oranges a try. Anything specific as to why it was disappointing?

message 111: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4407 comments I finished listening to The Rook (my review) while in Luxembourg and Footfall (my review) today. I also left my copy of Downbelow Station in Luxembourg, so I've officially lemmed that one.

Up next I think will be Sinner: A Prequel to the Mongoliad and The Mongoliad: Book One, which I have in audio. And I'm still reading through Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut. Though the book should be right up my alley, I'm finding it hard to keep interested in it.

I'm still trying to formulate exactly what I didn't like about it (hence no review yet).
I think it was quite a shallow send up of the urban fantasy genre and never actually felt like it escaped the clichés of the genre. The main character wasn't likeable or unlikable in an interesting way. Kiernan's done much more interesting things with unreliable narrators than this. Actually that, I think is my main problem with the book, I feel like it's beneath Kiernan's talents as a writer, maybe I would have let go and enjoyed it more if it was by an unknown.

message 113: by [deleted user] (new)

That's a shame. Ah well, look forward to your review.

Maybe I'll get to Fade to Black instead.

message 114: by David(LA,CA) (new)

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments Finished up Fool Moon which was okay, but I think I started to notice some of the reasons why people think the earlier books may not be as good as the later ones in the series.

Grave Peril will be started tonight.

message 115: by Paul (new)

Paul (latepaul) Also just finished Fool Moon which I enjoyed but not quite as much as Storm Front.

I've just bought Grave Peril but I;m not going to start it because I've got We Are Here on pre-order (it comes out tomorrow). Next "S&L" book will probably be The Novice

message 116: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 94 comments Finished Sealed with a Curse! =) It's a cool take on vampires & werewolves. The judge is still out on magic but I really enjoyed it. Good mix of everyday & not so everyday heroes, etc.

I'm resisting peer pressure on Frost Burned and looking to read the following:
A Conspiracy of Alchemists (The Chronicle of Light and Shadow, #1) by Liesel Schwarz Seven Kinds of Hell (Fangborn, #1) by Dana Cameron Eden by David Holley

ReReading in Bits: Cast In Courtlight (Chronicles of Elantra, #2) by Michelle Sagara West

message 117: by Laura (new)

Laura (conundrum44) | 109 comments I finally finished City of Golden Shadow and just started Pyramids.

message 118: by Joseph (new)

Joseph | 2433 comments Finished Fires of Azeroth and am onto C.J. Cherryh's last Morgaine novel, Exile's Gate. Really glad that Downbelow Station was this month's pick -- not only did it give me a reason to reread one of my all-time favorite books for the first time in about 15 years, but it inspired me to go back and reread some other favorite Cherryh books.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments Finished The Hero of Ages and OMG was it good! Everything fit together so perfectly and it all made sense. What a great trilogy. Now on to Throne of the Crescent Moon.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Just finished reading The Iron Duke which I'd noticed when it was a vaginal fantasy pick ages ago, but I've only just found time to read it. Such a fun book, and I had the added bonus of finally getting to watch the hang-out, which was also enjoyable. :D

I don't usually read their books, but I still watch VF -those ladies are sooo funny.

message 122: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 96 comments Finally got around to reading Old Man's War that was really good not sure what took me so long.
Also read Frost Burned which was better than the last but not as good as the first books in the series.

Nest up is Shaman's Crossing and a reread of The Stand it has been years since I read this one and I wonder if I will like it more with all the new details.

I hear it has a lot of sexy time.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Not enough, according to Bonnie! At least not until half way through the book. But it worked for me. ;P Actually, the story and the world in The Iron Duke were the best bits for me - zombies, pirates, nanobots, and kracken! :D What's not to love?!

Kristina, I couldn't bring myself to watch without reading the book, but I agree, those ladies are fabulous.

I'm gonna read that at some point - when I have some extra money to get it. (Two birthdays to buy for and I just bought a car = tight on cash).

I almost didn't read it because of the manly torso on the cover, but I'm glad I didn't set it aside. I just wish there were more Mongols in it. Maybe in the sequel?

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments Haha, thankfully the cover on the uk version was a little less manly torso; though the shirt does gape open a little more than I would have liked, I think the cover I had is much more appealing - we get Mina on it and everything!

Hopefully you will enjoy Shaman's Crossing, as I know many who hate the book. I, myself like the book a lot.

message 132: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I've got less than two hours left of Downbelow Station, then it's back to finish up the last half of The Daylight War.

I got a copy of the ebook of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. I'm so glad I didn't pay money for it. It's got such great ideas and is such an awesome concept, but it's really poorly written.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through A Clash of Kings, so I should be finishing it this year sometime. As slow as I'm going, I'm still reading faster than Martin is writing.

I'm also starting Wool Omnibus. I'm only a few chapters into it, but it seem like it's going to become a favorite.

How does that work as an eBook? I haven't read it yet, but from flipping through the hardcover it looks like it's full of pictures and hand-written annotations and similar things.

I have a Nook HD, so I do get all of the photos and letters. The one letter I've come to though, which is apparently pivotal, I couldn't read because it was so small on my screen and it doesn't let me zoom like I would on an app or web page. I love the photos. They're the main reason I wanted to read the book.

One of those times when it's a disadvantage to have an old-fashioned Kindle rather than the Fire.

I finished Deadhouse Gates (My Review) a little ahead of my Group Read. I enjoyed it, but not as much as Gardens of the Moon.

I changed my plans for the second half of the month and opted to start The Way of Kings instead of what I had been planning. Already 100 pages in and enjoying it a lot so far.

No but I have since adopted a Pet rock.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments I started Oz Reimagined: New Tales from the Emerald City and Beyond but put it aside for a while - it isn't the authors or editors fault, but they are using so many extra characters... I haven't read the actual Oz books so I don't know whether to give them credit or if they're using characters from the already well-developed Oz world. I feel like I should read all of Baum and then go back. I did enjoy Dot (Dorothy) as a lesbian witch-detective though.

I just finished Sister Mine by Nalo Hopkinson and really enjoyed it. The closest thing I can compare it to is N. K. Jemisin only not quite as romance-ridden, unless you count incestual demigods. :)

message 144: by Misti (new)

Misti (spookster5) | 549 comments I finally finished The Last Colony over the weekend. Loved it! I hate that it seems to take me a month to get through a book now, when it used to take a day or two. It's so hard to find time to read these days.

My next book is Blameless.
