Cyndi Goodgame | 35 comments There are several texting language dictionaries online that I use to check when I overhear students use one I don't know...then surprise them using later to get their attention in class. Lol Makes you a little "cooler" in their eyes. And..finding out some acronyms u woul rather have been uneducated on!!!!

Angela (angelaroquet) One of the coolest bits of advice I've heard on the subject of writing slang for YA, is from Joss Whedon. Hip words come and go so quickly anymore, and often, by the time your work comes out, the slang you've used is outdated. Instead of researching current word trends, Whedon invented his own for the show Buffy, so it was sure to be fresh when the show came out, and a lot of that slang caught on and became hip in the nineties. I'm going to be working on a YA novel later this year, so I think I will try out this method as well. ;)

message 54: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) Hi. I'm Indie and Proud. I've been saying that as a slogan, so I had to join the group.

I write historical fiction. 'Amgalant', either in two large books:
Amgalant One The Old Ideal by Bryn Hammond Amgalant Two Tribal Brawls by Bryn Hammond

Then I issued them in four shorter books--partly so I can offer a first free:
Of Battles Past (Amgalant #1) by Bryn Hammond When I am King (Amgalant #2) by Bryn Hammond Me and Atrocity (Amgalant #3) by Bryn Hammond The Sheep from the Goats (Amgalant #4) by Bryn Hammond

Glad to talk indie, the joys of indie, what I've found as indie treasures.

message 59: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen Garlock (kathykg) Hello everyone,

My name is Kathy and I snuck over from a history group behind Hazel and Bryn. As you can guess I write historical fiction, but I love to read fantasy. I wish I could write it but my imagination just doesn't work that way. I'm currently working on a paranormal historical involving pirates but it's slow going. My two self published books are;

Gone for a Soldier by Kathleen Kelly Garlock and Poverella by Kathleen Kelly Garlock

Yay, glad to see you too, Kathy =) I'm with you, I enjoy reading fantasy, but have never been able to write it.

Kathleen Garlock (kathykg) Hi Hazel,

Sandra Bennett | 22 comments Hi Everyone, I'm Sandra and I've really enjoyed reading through all the discussions so far and looking forward to meeting you all. I love reading YA and historical fiction but my passion lies in children's literature where I have self published my first book Gingerbread Aliens. It is available on Amazon kindle, ipad or in paperback from my website. Part two Alien Shenanigans is due out mid this year.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome to the group Sandra! I'll definitely check out Gingerbread Aliens for my nieces. Love the title ;)

message 70: by Bryn (new)

Bryn Hammond (brynhammond) Yes, that is one cute title: 'Gingerbread Aliens'. I wish I were a kid again.

message 71: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Bennett | 22 comments Hi Jessica and Bryn, thanks for responding so positively, I admit to be a little concerned joining as there were no other children's authors listed. It's a fun book, hope you like it. :)

message 72: by [deleted user] (new)

I have a few ideas for children's novels bouncing around in my brain that aren't fully realized yet, and I think no matter what genre we write, we should support each other and give advice. I'm glad you joined! :)

message 73: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Bennett | 22 comments Thanks Jessica. If you feel you would like to bounce those ideas off anyone, I'd love to discuss and help.

message 74: by Cyndi (last edited Mar 08, 2013 04:10AM) (new)

Cyndi Goodgame | 35 comments Amen on the ideas! Sometimes I feel like I so many ideas and not enough time. I look at the date of when some documents were started and I ask myself how a year or two passed since then...but it has. Hazel got me thinking about my historical fiction again. And I have one age 8 and up project started.

Sooo....all ideas are welcome. Cyndi :)

Karen | 7 comments I self-published my first book in November, Bats and Bones, a cozy mystery about camping. The second book, The Blue Coyote will be out in April. Love this site and seeing what others are doing! Bats and Bones (The Frannie Shoemaker Campground Mysteries, #1) by Karen Musser Nortman

message 76: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks guys! I'll definitely take you up on that. Some of my projects just aren't there yet so it will be nice to get someone else's perspective.

message 77: by [deleted user] (new)

Heidi Garrett (heidi_g) It's wonderful to see the group growing!

Ditto!

message 80: by Trystan (new)

Trystan Vikar (trystanvikar) Hi I'm Trystan!

I write dark fiction about monsters and and creatures in a struggle with their own identities and humanity. Oddly enough, it's not as angsty as it sounds. Most of it so far is taking place in Saskatchewan, Canada. Which is really a place, I swear.

I'm also an ex-alt fashion and lifestyle journalist who spends their time now consumed by their involvement in "The Penny Dreadful Experiment". This is a weird project where we study the developments and efforts required for a completely new, debut author to market their book when she start off as a total unknown. I'm a serious nerd if that was instantly obvious.

message 81: by Saga (new)

Saga Berg (sagaberg) | 5 comments Hi,

I'm a Swedish self published author and so far I've self published 5 parts of a Novella Series called Nordic Fairies. I'm currently struggling to finish the 6th and last part of the series. These are the ones I have out so far.

Nordic Fairies (Nordic Fairies, #1) by Saga Berg Freja (Nordic Fairies, #2) by Saga Berg Döckálfar (Nordic Fairies, #3) by Saga Berg Daughters (Nordic Fairies, #4) by Saga Berg Missing (Nordic Fairies, #5) by Saga Berg

Looking forward to learning a lot from those of you who have a lot experience in self publishing, and hopefully to contribute with something as well :)

Anne Conley (anneconley) | 7 comments I'm Anne, and I've self-published two novels and a novella, all Romance. I'm currently working on a paranormal romance. I'm looking forward to spending some time here, getting to know everybody. I've learned that Goodreads is almost as addicting for me as facebook, and I'm trying desperately to learn my way around. i.e. I have no idea how to put up my covers. ACK!

message 85: by [deleted user] (new)

Heather | 1 comments Marysue wrote: "Cyndi wrote: "I teach teens and I don't know. I am always adding to my slang swag as my students call it. Lol"

I'd love to learn more about your swag slang...what do subject do you teach?"

I teach high school English. In fact, I teach intensive reading recovery to 9th graders. Slang is a funny thing. I always know when there's a new phrase because it seems innocent when I say it, but the kids' laughter tells me otherwise. But half the time, the kids ask ME what a slang word/phrase means so we usually end up researching it on www.urbandictionary.com. I also edit books for self-published authors: www.hjseditingservices.com

Okay, this is just an random inquiry: is anyone else having problems pulling up book pages? Whenever I try, it comes up for a second and then goes blank. It's very annoying, and the rest of the site is working fine.

I think it might actually be something to do with my flash update (or whatever it is) because I tried it on my parent's computer and it worked on that. Hopefully it's just a weird thing with the site and it will stop soon

message 93: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Chartier (nikchartier) Hi everyone! I'm Nikki, and I write YA/NA contemporary novels (also all of the above in the subgenre of LGBT). My writer best friend just sorta bailed on me as far as indie pubbing goes (life stresses and such), so I'm really hoping to make some new indie author friends. This self-pubbing journey is crazy, and I really don't want to go through it alone lol.

message 94: by [deleted user] (new)

You're not alone, Nikki! You've joined the right group. If you need help with anything just send me a message or you can post it as a topic. I work with a writing partner too but I also write novels of my own and it's so much harder without her! So, welcome to the group & I look forward to chatting with you :)

message 95: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Peers | 12 comments I have no "real life" writing buddies at all so groups like this are critical for my sanity! :) welcome!

message 96: by Nikki (new)

Nikki Chartier (nikchartier) I don't either! I have my sister, but she writes more for fun than to "be a writer." My writerly best friend is someone I met online, but she's been w/me for over 2 years, and now I'm not sure if/when she'll ever publish. I'm SO thankful I finally found some groups online to join! :)

I actually do have a couple fellow writers in real life and a young lass I'm kind of mentoring ;) But I've made some awesome friendships meeting writers here on Goodreads or other places. People who I would have coffee with all the time if they didn't live so far away, but that's why I love GR =)

message 99: by Lynn Blackmar (last edited Apr 01, 2013 10:17AM) (new)

Lynn Blackmar | 18 comments I'm Lynn, and I write a YA/new adult spy thriller series called The Misfits. One person described it as Back to the Future II meets The Mod Squad. The second book, Rebel, will come out in a few weeks.

I also love to read indie fiction, and already added a couple things from here!
