Shirley (shirleythekindlereader) If you are looking for audible classics ...

There seems to be a great sale on them in the whispersync variety.

check the title in kindle books first
usually $.00 and up
buy the kindle first
then you get the reduced price

The Black Arrow $.49 4 hours

The Time Machine $.49 9 hours

A Room with a View $.49 8 hours

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Another little question, one of the books I am planning on reading is And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and I am just wondering how many points it will be worth (if any) in the Genre section because there isn't a mystery category?

If it doesn't fit a category to gain points, it earns 0 points. Sorry about that.

but, having tried to win a challenge and read a completely awful book in the process, I've given up trying to win and will read something I want to!

message 54: by Marcus (new)

Marcus | 868 comments Yeah I recently got The Phantom of the Opera on my kindle for free as well as a lot of russian lit so that will be my choice for the March challenge....too bad Frankenstein is my F book for the alphabet challenge. That would have been perfect.

message 55: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Thanks for clarifying Helen. This is my first monthly challenge so I want to make sure that I do it right.

message 56: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments You can read whatever book you like as long as it is within the theme.

Then there are points if your choice fits certain categories. But you get credit for participation if you get 0 or 100 points.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Rusalka wrote: "... I just randomised my list three times and each time The Catcher in the Rye came up number 1.

Guess I should take that hint lol"

I was browsing the listings on my Nook for books under $3.99 last night and this one came up, but I did not down load it. Maybe I will after all... :)

message 58: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments And of course, I already started listening to A Tale of Two Cities on Saturday while I was sick in bed, so that will not count. I am already reading some classic Heinlein books...sigh.

message 59: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments Always the way Cherie! But you can't tell me you don't have any other book that fits this theme on your TBR. If so, I am in awe ;)

Rachel Lisa wrote: "Another little question, one of the books I am planning on reading is And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie and I am just wondering how many points it will be worth (if any) in the Genre sect..."

And Then There Were None is a great book- hope you enjoy!

message 61: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Sorry, Rusalka, I did not mean to make it sound like I was giving you a hard time. It is just a coincidence that you announced your challenge at the same time that I was already reading some classics that fit into the catagory and I cannot count. :)

I had already decided to read Heinlein's classics and I just happened to decide to listen to A Tale of Two Cities this weekend. I am happy and I am sure I will find something else to fit in. I have plenty on my TBR list.

On Heinlein - I thought I would not remember the stories because it has been a long since I had read them, but it is amazing how quickly it all comes back! Within a few pages, or even a few key words it is all there.

I love Henrik Ibsen! Try his A Doll's House or Hedda Gabler if you want to read about unforgettable female character or Peer Gynt if you want fantasy (and much more than that) and don't forgot to listen Grieg when reading Peer ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLZl-...

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments lol. Sorry we are at one word answers this week during work hours.

Seriously though, if there are none on your shelves and there are none you wish to read, I would suggest trawling this thread and the Reporting thread in the first week or two. We will have early finishers who will get things out of the way early int he month who will give opinions and recommendations. You may find something that interests you that way!

message 69: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments I thought your answer was pretty funny and smart; no need to apologize, at least for me ~ it brightened up my day and had me laughing out loud, literally :-)

Janice (jamasc) | 60271 comments You must not be at work, Rusalka, or your answer would have simply been, "Happy!"

message 72: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments I'm now procrastinating. Can't you tell?

message 73: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60271 comments Procrastination.... instead of a one word answer, it was three. ROFL! Got it.

I will also be hitting the library tomorrow. I need a book for the classics challenge and the alphabet challenge. I cannot for the life of me find an "A" book that I like.

message 77: by AmyK (new)

AmyK (yakyma) | 1045 comments Poor Julia...... I hope the rest of the alphabet doesn't give you as much trouble. I started reading 5 different "b" books before I stuck with one, so I know how you feel

Julia (juliace) AmyK wrote: "Poor Julia...... I hope the rest of the alphabet doesn't give you as much trouble. I started reading 5 different "b" books before I stuck with one, so I know how you feel"

I dug through some boxes that I had shoved in the back of my closet and found some books there so hopefully I'll get on track (fingers crossed)

message 79: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) I have a couple of different choices

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer
Jo's Boys
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Other Stories
Death of a Salesman
The Grapes of Wrath

I have not read any of these books, and the only author I've read is Louisa May Alcott's Little Women which I love!! I'm looking very forward to March to start this challenge!

message 80: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments My boss' 10 year old daughter tells me Jo's Boys is very good. In fact it was her favourite book last year.

Someone's got some good taste there. I'd just point out that Jo's Boys doesn't follow on from little women. I have them on the shelf in order

Little Women, Good Wives, Little Men, Jo's Boys.

not saying don't read it, just warning you it doesn't pick up from the end, so you may find yourself wondering how they got to where this book starts.

message 83: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra (alex2911) | 734 comments This sounds like a great challenge, Rusalka, count me in! I think this is my opportunity to finally tackle Don Quixote. If I don´t read it now that I will earn point for these many pages, I will never read it I guess.

message 84: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4564 comments I just downloaded the Jane Austen Collection 18 Works, over 2000 pages, onto my Kindle. I'm set.

message 85: by Thing Two (new)

Thing Two (thingtwo) Is it March yet? tick tick tick

I'm starting with The Gift of the Magi The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry , A View from the Bridge A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller , and A Coney Island of the Mind A Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti .

I'm 10 books behind on my Alphabet challenge, so I can't read too many "other" books or the YLTO gods will roast me over a bed of burning banned books!

just 7hrs&43 minutes here - and I've had notification that my book has arrived in the library. What good timing. >:-)

I LOVE Little Women, but have not read any other books by L.M.Alcott. I'm hoping I enjoy it as much as LW.

Well, I'll have to wait to read Jo's Boys and read Good Wives. I'm an absolute freak about reading books in order.

message 91: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) Downloaded Good Wives to my Nook so I'm ready to start the March challenge. Do we need to create a separate thread, similar to the alphabet challenge?

There will be a reporting thread where everyone reports their book with point tally.

It will magically appear tomorrow when Rusalka waves her magic wand.

message 95: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments NO! It will magically appear today as we are already 17 hours in to March here. But I have spent 3 hours at work, 1.5 hours at the accountant and getting my windscreen replaced, 1 at the markets, 1 in line at the computer store and 30 mins stuck in an accident. Cider must be consumed first.

P.S. I approve of Anne of Green Gables. She, Annie and Matilda were all my idols as a child.

message 96: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 915 comments Hope you are ok Rusalka (ie. stuck in an accident)? Relax, unwind, drink, drink again, relax, we'll be here, waiting for your slurred "Ib fines, reallies I iz" :-)

message 97: by Lucy (new)

Lucy Furr (lucyfurr) | 775 comments Downloaded The Iliad on audio book today (unabridged, of course). I hope that makes it easier to go down (14hrs long, wooo). This is one of the few stories out there that actually intimidates me. ;)

message 98: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliace) Rusalka - hope everything is ok, re: stuck in an accident.

message 99: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19237 comments Oh yeah, I was fine. But thank you both. I was just one of the people stuck in the aftermath wondering why I was getting home at 5pm when I left work at 11am.

message 100: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda | 29 comments I've decided my to read The Catcher in the Rye first. I've thought about reading it for years, so it's as good a choice as any. I'm considering East of Eden, but not sure yet. Has anyone read it?
