Kirsten (kmcripn) Happy National IPA Day!

The first known use of beer, “India pale ale”, IPA, was in Sydney, Australia 1829

IPA is consistently the top selling craft beer style in America, representing around 18.4% of total craft beer sales.

Double IPAs (also referred to as Imperial IPAs) are a stronger, very hoppy variant of IPAs that typically have alcohol content above 7.5% by volume

American-style IPA is generally drier and uses American hops to give an intense hop profile with more floral, citrusy, piney, or tropical characteristics.

English-style IPA is generally maltier flavored brew that uses English hops and yeasts, giving a more fruity and herbal aroma with a lower ABV than American IPAs.

Kirsten (kmcripn) National Frozen Custard Day

Frozen custard is a type of frozen dessert that was invented by ice cream vendors Elton and Archie Kohr from Coney Island, New-York.
Frozen custard is similar to ice cream, but it contains egg yolks in addition to cream and sugar. Adding egg yolks allows to create a smoother texture and help the dessert stay cold longer. Frozen custard was invented in 1919 but it had been unknown to the wide public until 1933.
A frozen custard stand at the World's Fair in Chicago helped spread the dessert's popularity across the United States. Frozen custard is especially popular in Wisconsin (Milwaukee is even referred to as the unofficial frozen custard capital of the world) and Ohio.
According to the Food and Drug Administration requirements, frozen custard must contain at least 1.4% egg yolk solids and 10% milkfat. True frozen custard is a very dense dessert with a smooth consistency and a thick, creamy texture. It is typically prepared right at frozen custard stands, rather than stored. Most stands offer three flavors per day: vanilla, chocolate, and “flavor of the day”.
Custard bases may also be used for quiches and other savory foods.
Depending on how much egg or thickener is used, custard may vary in consistency from a thin pouring sauce (crème anglaise), to a thick pastry cream used to fill éclairs.
Custard is a variety of culinary preparations based on a cooked mixture of milk or cream and egg yolk.
The most common custards are used as desserts or dessert sauces and typically include sugar and vanilla.
Sometimes flour, corn starch, or gelatin is added as in pastry cream or creme patissiere.

National Dollar Day

August 8 commemorates the day Congress established the U.S. monetary system in 1786. It’s National Dollar Day!

The first U.S. dollar bill wasn’t printed until 1862, and it didn’t bear the image of George Washington, either. Salmon P. Chase, President Lincoln’s Secretary of Treasury, was featured on the first greenback.

I have SO many good books from the library right now! I want to read them all, but we are moving in November and somehow I don't think I'll be able to read them all before we move in one month! Of course, none of them are audiobooks that I could listen to while packing... I will need to prioritize which to focus on. Any thoughts??

I have:
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult Girl in Pieces by Kathleen Glasgow Britt-Marie Was Here by Fredrik Backman The Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K. Rowling Nimona by Noelle Stevenson

I'm also first in queue for: (They are all due to come in soon!)
Truly Madly Guilty by Liane Moriarty The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware Before the Fall by Noah Hawley The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper by Phaedra Patrick Heartless by Marissa Meyer The Girls in the Garden by Lisa Jewell

Ok...I need a quick vent here...A little over a year ago, I reviewed The Whole 30: The Official 30-day Guide To Total Health And Food Freedom. And today, a second internet troll told me how I read the book wrong and made assumptions about me based on my review, such as "Don't let being chronically uncomfortable, tired, or suffering aches and pains become your new normal because you just can't live life without Friday night pizza."

First of all, I never said that I had any chronic issues and secondly, wow, what an assumption that I eat pizza (and other 'junk' food) every Friday night because I said that I don't want to follow an overly strict diet and cut a lot things completely out of my diet.

She also said, "Yes, it requires discipline--but isn't that an admirable trait we'd all like to have?" As if, because I don't want to follow this diet, I am a completely undisciplined person.

What makes people think that they can judge others by their opinion of a book?? I gave the book 3 stars and even said that it may work for others, but it's just not for me at the end of my review. I seriously want to drop the rating to 1 star just because the trolls annoy me so much.

Anyway, here is my review (attached below) if you want to take a look. Please come back here and let me know if you think it was over the top. I felt it was just an ok book with a diet that won't work for me.

Thank you for letting me vent! Sorry about the rant. Those trolls get to me sometimes.

message 2143: by Vicki Willis (new)

Vicki Willis | 1033 comments Wow, I just read all that and wow... really!
Some people think they have all the answers for everyone and have to put in their two cents.
I thought your review was very fair to the book and even though it isn't for you, there were nice things you said about it.
People who don't know you, shouldn't judge you.
You definitely can have a healthy lifestyle and NOT follow that plan (or any plan) even IF one DID want pizza every Friday night. lol
I would rather read a whole bunch of things and pick and choose what works for me and mine and have an enjoyable and healthy food life.
AND one more thing... even if someone HATED the book, they should be able to say so, with out persecution. That is the beauty of opinion.

So there is my rant about it.

message 2144: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 6832 comments Mod
Thanks, Vicki! I thought I was fair too. It's strange how people get upset over a review that is so middle of the road. I read a lot of books about health and nutrition and apply what I like to my lifestyle. This one just didn't work for me. Thanks for taking a look and leaving me feedback. :)

Anima Miejska | 1698 comments I find your review balanced and honest, Kristie. I do understand your irritation completely, I myself can't stand when people judge others, no matter what, and when they behave in such a radical way. Do not resign from writing reviews, I find them helpful :)

Kirsten (kmcripn) What? No free speech?

The only criticism I'd give to a review would be if someone used spoilers without warning.

message 2150: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

That is fair, Kirsten! I hate accidentally reading spoilers. They can have their opinion, but hide the spoilers.
