Well done, Lucas. In a few days from now, when my new thyroid meds reach my brain, I might write something more intelligent than this. Look at the organizations that are led by straights or celibates and yet harbor and protect pedophiles, repeatedly. What did they tell those kids? That it is okay to victimize and injure someone because we take care of our own. Because your value as an individual is minuscule when compared to a two-faced organized religion or giant academic institution.

Danni | 248 comments Oh man, I wish to complain that I get on with real life for half a day and there are so many complaints I can't keep up with them. Hooray Boo to this group for being such a fantastic terrible bunch of complainers.

So, thanks poo to everyone who has put da yoof at risk (or put themseves at risk from da yoof) by voting for my story at the YA group - very grumbly appreciative thanks are flying your way.

Anil, I'm sorry to hear about everything that is going on. It is truly awful.

Wow, the whole Boy Scouts situation is weird and disgusting. Am I right in assuming that they believe that gay = paedophile? So much ignorance in the world, it's frightening.

Goesta On a lighter note: As if I didn't have enough problems and decisions to make! The final day of the DSP event, I won a free book (any title, up to $7). The reason I won makes it sort of important to me, sentimentally, but I have no idea what I should pick. Please someone tell me what title to get! Any recent faves? PM me.

Unfortunately I'm bejuggered to say that the glorious, great and mysterious Zack is perfectly right. I'm not wired to be a whip cracker or a smacker, although that does sound surprisingly enjoyable when applied to different circumstances, involving studded leather and spiked heels.... but back to trying to be vile. I'm afraid I am and always will be a hugger and a comforter and an old bird with a wacky sense of humour and a mucky mind! I get upset if I have to tell someone they've got spinach in their teeth and that's to save them from embarrassment! I bow my head in shame and admit as a strict moderator I'm about as much use as a chocolate fireguard, and at this age I'm not going to change. I think someone should overthrow me in another "complainer coup " and demote me back to just one of the moaners and whingers. Then I can spend my time writing naughty stories and worshipping our lovely not so dumb Dr jock from the lower rank and file.

This is me being vile and all stern and whip crackery!

" erm, I hope you don't mind me telling you but erm, you haven't been following the rules! OH NO I've upset you, don't cry .. Its alright, forget I said anything. Break the rules, break all the rules if it just stops you getting upset. Oh sweetie come here and I'll give you a hug! "

See what I mean!! I am a hopeless choice... My fate is now the now finely honed doctor trained hands of our true and much loved original and best ever moderator the lovely LL.

message 3564: by Averin (new)

Averin | 1962 comments This says it better than me: "The ugliest lie about gay men is that we are likely to be predators and pedophiles, preying upon children. This twisted belief, backed by no facts but exploiting deep-seated myths and powerful fears about homosexuality, is still firmly embedded in our culture, as are lies about blacks, Jews and other groups demonized within our culture. It's the lie that has kept many gay men from even interacting with teens and young children, fearful of being in the position of being wrongly accused of making sexual advances. It's a lie that often inhibits organizing, depriving us of the intergenerational mentoring and self-esteem-building that is so important for any minority group that is discriminated against." From Huffpost

At Penn State, people trusted a man affiliated with a lauded football program. When higher ups in the athletics and university government found out, they covered up for Sandusky. I think the capacity to see a child as a sexual object isn't a matter of orientation but of sociopathy.

Elorie Decker | 220 comments I would like to agree with the baby steps idea for the Boy Scouts, but 1. this is so much less than a baby step that it hardly counts as a step, maybe a turn of the head in the right direction and 2. they delayed and stalled and put off a decision so long that it was clear it was not a willing decision. But political pressure and maybe fear of monetary loss and general negative response by the many many who wanted it and would have kept up the turmoil if it wasn't done, was more of a motivator. I am pissed off, miffed and generally disappointed by their lukewarm reaction. Like so many issues, what the majority of the people wants is ignored by their reps who continue in their arrogance and conceit to promote their goals.

To which I suggested:

Of course they don't consider 'boy gay' to be 'man gay' because, like those who rely heavily on Leviticus to justify the repudiation of homosexual love, the true modern 'liberals' rely on Kinsey and his description of 'proto-homosexuality' which is a state that rectifies itself sometime in the mid-to-late teens to normality.

message 3570: by Elorie (new)

Elorie Decker | 220 comments Referring to Averin's quote, I hate that statistics are so often misinterpreted. Child molesting is much more likely to a straight white male with an opposite sexed child, and a member of the family or a close friend. It has nothing to do with gayness, but the lack of feeling of power, inability to interact with appropriate sexual partners and lack of ability to perform with adult. It is awful that pedophiles and gay predators are lumped in the same group. BOTH should be pursued, but we don't classify the whole class of white males as pedophiles. And when a straight male goes after a male child it is again a matter of power vs defencelessness. They could not treat an adult that way. One of my many real hot points.

message 3571: by Elorie (new)

Elorie Decker | 220 comments As for the Christian angle, they only think they are Christians. By their behavior alone, they eliminate themselves from that religion. I have know real Christians, and they are more concerned with their owm behavior, being just and honest and fair and tolerant and doing good, not spouting off that they are going to. I hate the hypocrisy of too many lip service Christians, who point to the Bible which has a lot of really good stuff in it and then some ridiculously out dated ideas and punishments.

The Girl Scouts of America "...policy with regard to the sexual orientation of its members, volunteers and staff states “there are no membership policies on sexual preference,” which means that unlike the Boy Scouts and their policy regarding homosexual male adults, the Girl Scouts allow lesbians to serve as leaders."

"We have provided the information in this section to make parents aware that Girl Scouts of the USA is increasingly promoting LGBT issues to girls by featuring prominent LGBT rights activists as role models at Girl Scout events, in Girl Scout materials, and by referring girls to websites that aggressively promote special LGBT rights."

The Girl Scouts has a woman who is an active LGBT rights advocate on it's Board of Directors.

(So Macky doesn't swat me,) I protest with: "There's no doubt those are stereotypes that need unpacking. Sociologists have long noted that homophobia is a fundamental ingredient of masculinity in modern American culture. In his seminal 1994 article "Masculinity as Homophobia," sociologist Michael Kimmel, author of Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men, argued that "homophobia is a central organizing principle of our cultural definition of manhood." Since homosexuality is associated with femininity, feminizing and anti-gay comments are the primary mechanism for enforcing the boundaries of masculinity. If a guy steps ever so slightly outside of gender norms, his peers will bring him back into line by calling his heterosexuality into question (which implicitly challenges his gender). The pressure to prove and re-prove hetereosexuality is part of what it means to "be a man"—and it pushes men to embrace both homophobia and hypermasculinity. "Homophobia, the fear of being perceived as gay, as not a real man, keeps men exaggerating all the traditional rules of masculinity, including sexual predation with women," Kimmel wrote. "Homophobia and sexism go hand-in-hand."

I think in the UK girls join scouts but I don't think we have many boys in the Girl Guides or Brownies. We do have other uniformed groups such as the Army Cadets and Air Force cadets. Discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation is illegal in the UK although there are some jobs where employers can seek exemption on grounds of gender. (eg employing a female life guard for female only swimming sessions) I don't think you can seek exemption on grounds of sexual orientation but I am sure discrimination still occurs. It definitely occurs on racial grounds and gender so I am sure people will be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation, but at least it is illegal in the UK.

Yeah, there are lots of girls in the Scouts in my daughter's group, but I've never heard of a boy going to Guides although I don't suppose there would be anything to stop them. I guess there is a stigma for boys to take part in 'girl's' activities, while the same stigma doesn't exist for girls taking part in 'boy's' activities. My daughter also does skating and one time when she went to practice, one of the granddads there asked me if it was a 'girl's only' session. It was funny to me that he thought that but on that occasion there were no boys there so it kind of made sense. It seems a shame that boys miss out on stuff that they might enjoy because it's not considered 'manly'.

Under the law about to be sighed by the Nigerian president it is not only to gay sex but it is criminal just being gay! Gay people who do not have gay sex will be put in jail also simply for being gay.

Straight people can be jailed under the new Law.

Straight people who attend a gay wedding are in violation of the law and will be jailed.

Anybody (including straight people) who knows somebody who is gay will have to tell the authorities or they could go to jail for five years.

Any person who directly or indirectly makes public show of same-sex amorous relationships’ would also get a 10 year sentence. (Presumably this includes censorship of movies, plays, paintings and other literary or artistic works.

Hi Ijeoma,

Didn't you mean you might be British but it is your old home too?

I don't recommend any travel to your "old home" Nigeria since you have all those Nigerian gay "brothers" you would have to report to the authorities or be jailed yourself. Also I cannot imagine the Nigerian government would look to kindly on a gay activist even if she is a priest in the C of E.

"Kaleidoscope Trust director of faith and social development, Rev. Ijeoma Ajibade, said: 'This legislation denies LGBT Nigerians their fundamental rights. By claiming it is about outlawing same-sex marriage, the parliament is deliberately misleading people. Not a single group in my home country has asked for gay marriage. They ask only for the same rights to freedom from discrimination, personal liberty, human dignity and privacy that all Nigerians are entitled to under the constitution."

Yes Lucas you are right. I could be arrested if I go to Nigeria because I am on the board of Kaleidoscope. I was born here in the UK so I have British nationality but my parents were Nigerian. I went to high school in Nigeria and did my first degree and law school there too. I haven't been to Nigeria since 1995 and I won't be going there any time soon which is what I meant by 'my old home'. I think I would be ok if I was going for a quiet holiday, but I wouldn't risk it.

We have been campaigning against this bill since 2011

Here I am speaking about it: http://kaleidoscopetrust.com/news/34 A brief interview for BBC

And here is my article about it again from 2011 - http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/rev-i...

It is such a shame after all this time nothing has changed. I hope the Nigerian President doesn't sign the bill but I don't hold much hope out for that. We may well see an increase in Nigerian refugees to other countries over the years to come.
