Casey wrote: "I'm in. NO idea what i"m doing. Can I start one and change my mind and use them for the other option if applicable?"Yup! Absolutely! :)
Hey gang! I made a slight change to one of the goals in the "Frequent flyer" section. For the cover-image hunt (which was supposed to be the easiest things to find) I swapped out "Passport" (<--- because it seemed near impossible to find any titles with a passport on the cover) and put in "famous landmarks."
If you're wondering what a famous landmark might be - just look at the image at the top of this challenge for ideas ;)
I'm going to give this one a shot! My track record isn't the greatest and I have a big move coming up, but who knows? Maybe I'll surprise myself, lol
Im In and I think i actually completed one :pRead a book that takes place in a country other than the one you live in! (If you do this more than once, make sure that they are different countries):
2,500 miles
I wanted to recommend some YA books for those brave souls who might be trying option 1:Africa:
Asia:
Antarctica:
Australia:
I've read all of these and they are pretty good, so if you are looking for something for option 1 I definitely suggest these (haven't read any YA set in South America, but the book
features a 19 year old protagonist and reads very much like YA. Its set mainly in Chile).
Hey all! I'm in, I'll be doing option 2, globetrotter all the way! I will research for the books though.Translations

based in Antartica?
Casey wrote: "Is
based in Antartica?"Hi Casey! A little research tells me that East actually takes place in 16th century Norway.
So, Europe - not Antarctica.

Is based in Norway:)
I've finished the first one for 2500 miles,
Set in a different country (US), and updated post #10.Also, I had a question about the translations. My native language is Spanish but I read mostly in English, so a book that has been translated from English wouldn't count, would it? And for other languages, do I have to read the Spanish translations, or is it that as long as I don't read the original it's OK?
Thanks in advance!
Option 2:♦ Read a book that takes place in a country other than the one you live in! (If you do this more than once, make sure that they are different countries):
2,500 miles
I just finished Darkfever by Karen Marie Moning! It takes place in Ireland!
Gabriela wrote: "Also, I had a question about the translations. My native language is Spanish but I read mostly in English, so a book that has been translated from English wouldn't count, would it? And for other languages, do I have to read the Spanish translations, or is it that as long as I don't read the original it's OK?"Phew! That is a GREAT question, Gabriela! I would be willing to count one book that has been translated from English into Spanish for you (since Spanish is your native language).
As you're clearly bilingual in your reading abilities, it wouldn't matter to me what language you read other translations in SO LONG AS they were originally published in a language that is NOT Spanish or English. Does that make sense? Hopefully that opens up more possibilities for you!
Gremlin wrote: "Gabriela wrote: "Also, I had a question about the translations. My native language is Spanish but I read mostly in English, so a book that has been translated from English wouldn't count, would it?..."¡¡Muchas gracias!! :) That clears up my doubts, but I'll try not to rely on the book originally written in English (it's called 'challenge' for a reason, right?)
I'm in for option 2 but I have a few questions. For the location of a book's setting does it have to be a majority of the book? I'm wondering about Cress specifically which takes place in Beijing, the Sahara Desert, and space. And since we have to use different countries are we not suppose to use the same root word more than once? For example, could I use World After and Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports and This Shattered World?Other possibilities:
(non-YA)
COMPLETED:
- another country - China - 2500 pts
- root word - world - 2000 pts
- another country - Ethiopia - 2500 pts
- another country - Ireland - 2500 ptsTotal points: 9500
Anna wrote: "I'm in for option 2 but I have a few questions. For the location of a book's setting does it have to be a majority of the book? I'm wondering about Cress specifically which takes ..."Welcome to the challenge, Anna! And good questions.
#1 - When it comes to the different countries, I left that a little vague on purpose (to allow some flexibility to the readers) but my idea was that a large part of the book should take place in that country (like, preferably 50% or more). For instance, I don't think that I'd want to count The Fault in Our Stars as a book taking place in Amererdam, even though they take a trip there - because MOST of the book takes place in the US. Does that make sense? But really, I'm leaving it up to reader discretion (since I haven't read all of the books in the world and would have a hard time arguing the point on many of these). Honor code! :)
#2 - I think reusing the same root word is okay. But if you want to give yourself an extra challenge, then don't! Totally up to you.
I think I'm going to once again TRY to complete a challenge! I'm going for Option 2, and possibly Sightseer. Some possibilities:Map, Famous landmark or Mode of Transportation On Cover
Root Words Title (world, wander, trip, adventure, hotel, explore, tourist, bridge, travel, culture)
City Name in Title
Takes place in a country other than the one you live in (more than once = different countries)
Translated from a language that is not your native language
I want to do option 1 but everything I want/have is either North America, Europe or Australia . Gotta keep looking.
Finished Just One Year. It takes place in several countries. But Holland and India mostly. 2500 miles!Updated post 14
Thanks for the answers Gremlin.I finished my 1st book
- another country - China - 2500 ptsupdated #31
Finished my 2nd
. This takes place in a different country (England) so it adds 2500 miles to my 1500 miles for a total of 4000 miles. Updated post #8.

...I dont know ig this is allowed but it does have a motel on the cover so thought it fit with the theme?"Hi Melanie! Just noticed you're question there! I like you're creativity, but I'm afraid we can't count I'll Meet You There. I'm gonna have to be a stickler for the cover images requested - maps, landmarks, and modes of transport.

Finished a couple books while we were on vacation, and I've already updated post 14.
- I really liked it! More than I think I expected to.
- Loved this one. Cried so much through the last couple chapters.
Life just keeps getting in the way of my reading time. :(Finally finished #1
(Asia), and I think this should count as non-ya. It was originally written in Chinese, and reads more like a fairy-tale.Updated post #6

This second quarter challenge runs from July 1st to September 30th
To participate in this global challenge, you can take either of these two forms of travel planning:
OPTION ONE – Use a travel agent for an Easy Guided Tour
♦ Read 6 books that each take place in a different populated continent:
Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe and Australia/Oceania
(if you’re able to find and read a book that takes place in Antarctica as well, then you win at life!)
OPTION TWO – Use your own cunning and your Frequent Flyer Miles
It takes almost 25,000 miles to fly around the world. How far can you travel in three months? Which of these types of travelers will you be?
Weekender - 6,250 miles
Sightseer - 12,500 miles
Jetsetter - 18,750 miles
Globetrotter - 25,000 miles
Mix and match (and duplicate) these methods of acquiring miles as you see fit! Just like in school, though - don't forget to show your math!
♦ Read a book with a picture of a map, famous landmark or mode of transportation on the cover:
1500 miles
♦ Read a book with any of the following root words in the title:
world, wander, trip, adventure, hotel, explore, tourist, bridge, travel, trip, culture
2,000 miles
♦ Read a book with a city name in the title:
1750 miles for a fictional city
2250 miles for a real-world city
♦ Read a book that takes place in a country other than the one you live in! (If you do this more than once, make sure that they are different countries):
2,500 miles
♦ Book that has been translated from a language that is not your native language:
3,000 miles
Details:
You may count 1 non-YA towards this challenge for every 6 books read (so if you read more than 6, you may count 2 non YAs; if you read more than 12, you may count 3 – and so on).
All of the books MUST be at least 150 (paper) pages in order to qualify for this challenge. If the kindle or eBook pages are different than the paper count, please check the paper page count on good reads to make sure it qualifies. If you are reading an ebook only book, the word count MUST be a minimum of 45,000.
Audio books are allowed, as always! But please make sure that the page count for the print-book counter-part is 150 pages.
Please list the title you’ve read, the option you’re working on, and the miles (if applicable) you’re claiming for each title you read. More info is better! If it takes place in a country outside of your own, tell us which country. If the cover has an image that you’re claiming, share the cover image :)
If a book could score miles for two reasons (say it takes place in a different country AND is a translation) you may only pick one category for it to represent. (I advise choosing the one worth the most points :P).
I'll be keeping track of participant’s progress (as much as possible) in post #2. Participants will be listed alphabetically by their name and the number of their original post in the challenge.
When posting your progress, please remember to use the number attached to your original post as well. (This will be especially useful to save me from mixing up folks with similar names).
