Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Is the strep thing people in the US refer to really something different from the laryngitis here? Maybe it's just different names for the same thing? Or like a general/most often used but not necessarily correct name for all kinds of similar throat infections?

I've heard of hand/foot/mouth disease but only vaguely and only on the internet or on tv. I have no idea what it is exactly. I guess it's not so common here. I just looked it up and apparently it's common in young children. The Dutch name is a literal translation of the English one and I for sure have never heard anyone say that.

message 1402: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments As someone pointed out above, strep refers to an infection from a particular bacteria. Here is a link to an article all about it, complete with gross pictures.

message 1403: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments there was a big foot and mouth outbreak among pigs and cows here a few years back. I didn't realise humans could get it too. I'm guessing it's the same condition?!

message 1404: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I found this on our NHS site - looks like we're all talking about pretty much the same thing. http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/streptoc...

message 1405: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Oh that's right Sarah, I think I also heard of it in combination with animals.

message 1406: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) Laryngitis is when you lose your voice, strap is a very particular throat infection, they do a specific test for it with a swab to the back of your throat, and yes it is different from tonsillitis.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments @Lynda, I'm sorry to hear about your brother's house. What a terrible situation!

Colds and sore throats have been an issue here at home the last 2 weeks. We are all recovered now, but the baby, who still is running some fever. Hopefully it's done in a couple of days.

Take care everybody, and get better soon!

message 1408: by Tasha (new)

Tasha I break out the diffuser and essentials oils this time of year until about summer. :)

message 1409: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I've been away from GR for about a week now and I'm trying to catch up a little. I hope everyone who has been sick is feeling better.

Some of you may recall that my mother-in-law was placed on hospice care recently. This past Sunday she passed away. She held on for much longer than anyone, including doctors and nurses, ever expected. The last two weeks or so of her life were not easy, she was in a lot of pain and struggled to breathe. We are very sad that she is gone, but we are thankful she is at peace now.

Cherie, if you're in the US, I'll mail you the book. I'm in Nevada, so the book rate is pretty cheap.

Sorry to hear people are sick, hope everyone gets better. I was going to get my flu shot today, but our a/c broke and my husband is trying to get it fixed.

Will pray for your family, KimeyDiann. We lost my mother and grandfather the same year. Still miss them.

It is a pretty neat program so far. I think I like the photoshop over the web designing portion. I'm struggling with the test in one of the sections at the moment. I need to go back and review.

So sorry to hear of your mother in laws passing, KimeyDiann. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Sending virtual hugs :)

message 1418: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments Thank you everyone!

@Kandice, you are in my thoughts as well. Watching a loved one suffer is one of the hardest things I've had to do. If you need someone to talk to or to vent to, just let me know. I'm not a great advice-giver, but I'm a good listener.

Stephanie We are having a rainy weekend :) it is 62F (17C per the accuweather app). Perfect weekend to stay inside with the windows open snuggled up on the couch with the dog, a cup of coffee and a good book :)

message 1425: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Same temperature here Stephanie, except very sunny and no wind so it's lovely outside! It's supposed to be like this next week too. I think we'll go for a walk somewhere tomorrow.

message 1426: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Nice, Peggy :) enjoy :)
Hopefully we will get a break in the rain to get a walk in this weekend as well.

message 1428: by Kandice (new)

Kandice @KimeyDiann, thank you so much! Venting feels like complaining which makes me feel very guilty, but when someone else has lived it, it's easier to think they will understand.

message 1429: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I'm starting to feel better. I left work early yesterday and slept. Spent the morning on the couch, watching movies, and catching up with some new fall TV shows (nothing that I'm super excited about...even the new Muppet Show was disappointing). I'm feeling a little restless now, so I think I'll clean up a bit.

message 1430: by Stephanie (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Last Thursday I started to feel something bothering behind a teeth I had root canal therapy done 10 years ago. A few hours later it was pain, and by the night was terrible. It barely let me sleep.
I saw my dentist on Friday morning and it seems that my root canal wasn't properly done. The root wasn't emptied and cleaned all the way down until the end, but only about 2/3 of it. (%&%#$&@#@%!!!) The part that wasn't clean is now an important infection. It's incredible it took 10 years to happen.
I had a new/complete/well done root canal therapy done. Friday and Saturday have been hell. My face is so swollen, and painkillers only kept the pain tolerable, but it never disappeared. You know this kind of pain you want to hit your head against the wall?
This morning (Sunday) I think I'm a little better. It makes sense since I've been 48 hours under antibiotics now. I'm still swollen and using an ice pad 90% of the time. I really hope this starts improving because I'm not sure if I can endure another day like yesterday. I'm pretty resistant to pain, but this was just maddening.

I'm so sorry! I've never had a toothache like that, but my oldest son has. Same situation, but it was only 2 years between the original root canal and the flare up. I remember that once he had the second root canal he felt better fairly quickly so hopefully you have a better day in store.

Oh Sandra, I feel your pain. This happened to me a few years back and the amount of pain - it is so hard to describe. I hope you feel better soon.

message 1437: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Thank you Kandice and Anna,

I remember feeling pain when I had the root canal for the first time, but this is incredibly worse. I suppose the huge infection is the difference...
I didn't know it was so common the root canal not so well done. Never heard of that before, but know I have heard of 4 cases at least.

message 1438: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Sandra, that's awful! I hope you feel much better very soon.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I kind of, sort of organize my real life book club. On Friday, one of the women mentioned that there is an upcoming theatre production end of November, beginning of December. It's a dinner theatre combo. The suggesting member emailed me the link so I could disseminate the info.

Yesterday, I emailed the group with the dates and costs and said, "I'm really busy in October and won't have the time to organize this. Would someone like to arrange everything?"

The answers - "I want to go." "I vote for these dates" "I want to go too." Nobody said, "I'll organize".

Guess we aren't going.

Oh, who am I kidding! It looks like I'll be organizing. They have me pegged, apparently.

message 1441: by [deleted user] (new)

Must be because your an excellent organizer Janice!

message 1442: by CFDeeDee (new)

CFDeeDee Woow Sandra, tooth pain is the worse. My sister had such an infection once, and it affected all the way down to the nerve .. Took her weeks of treatment to fix her tooth, hope you feel better soon.

message 1443: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I agree with Anna, Janice. They know you'll do it, because you takes the time for doing things. But I understand is annoying don't have a back up when you need it.

message 1444: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Janice, you could send out another e-mail. This time say: "It looks like we have 4 people interested in going. Someone should step up and organize this (collect money, buy tickets). Someone who is not me."

message 1445: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Good suggestion, Casceil! Thanks. Maybe I cave in too easily.

message 1446: by Berit☀️✨ (new)

Berit☀️✨ (berittalksbooks) My daughter is on Cheer and ASB at school, She came home complaining the other day that she always has to do everything, and her older brother's response was, sometimes you need to do things half ass, so no one depends on you :-)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I completely understand Janice
This is me in my friendship circle/old housemates and co.

My favourite was our friends wedding. We had to go 700km away for it, I organised a house on the site of the wedding for 10 of us to stay in. We were there 6 days, of which I managed one couple to organise activities for one other day, otherwise...

Day of the wedding I find out that the groom and the 2 other groomsmen (3 already in the house) are coming to our house to get ready. Groom "organises" lunch before wedding (at 3pm) at 12pm down the road. Everyone is late. Bribe wait staff to bring food out constantly. Feed car loads at time, with groom first, and me yelling at people not to eat unless they are important.

Hits 2pm. Everyone fed, in cars, on route back to house. I then organise the groom and groomsmen, then the other 7 people through showers. All other women disappear. I am left to dress all groomsmen and other men. Do everyone's ties as I'm the only person in the house that can tie a tie thanks to Catholic primary school and my punk stage at 17. Including dealing with 1 groomsmen and groom who can't close their shirt on around their neck. One groomsman had no waistcoat, change everyone's dresscode so they all look presentable and match. Get blood nose over everything, but get bridal party and other men out the door with 10 mins spare. All other women appear at this stage and accompany them to the chapel.

Then I realise I'm in jeans, no shower, no makeup, no hair and have 7 mins to get ready to wedding... Still beat bride to chapel 15 mins later...

I bring this up constantly.

message 1448: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I hope you got suitably drunk afterwards for your efforts Rusalka! Hmmm... (view spoiler)

message 1449: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Janice, I also "run" a book club by default and have the same thing happen to me over and over. It's at the local library and was originally run by a librarian. When she quit the other librarians were supposed to take over but they did such a poor job we began running it ourselves which eventually trickled down to ME doing it.

*sigh*

I really enjoy it so always feel I need to step up but absolutely wish someone else would sometimes too!

message 1450: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Sandra, I'm so sorry to hear you're in so much pain. Tooth pain is impossible to ignore, it just nags at you. Hope you find some relief soon. Maybe try different pain killers?

At Janice, I don't meant to laugh, because I know how you feel. At work, we have a maintenance team of six men who work in the field 95% of time. I'm the one who had to take their paperwork/billings/shipping & receiving records in hand, because our bookkeeper has no capacity for organization. Also, now that we've made some adjustment for tax purposes in our cross-company billings, I'm doing all the excise-tax tracking now. So, half my job is work that should be hers, but because she has no capacity for detail/organization (not the best quality in a bookkeeper btw), it falls on my shoulders.

At least it gives us something to hold over people's heads!

Well today, I'm going to try and get a weekend's worth of stuff done in a Sunday. Cleaning (my house is a mess), laundry, photo processing, and cooking. I'm trying out a bunch of pumpkin recipes between now and Thanksgiving (culminating in pumpkin pie, of course!). For some insane reason I decided to blog about this; today I'm making pumpkin, apple, bacon soup.
