Tasha That is awesome, Lynda! :)

message 855: by BurgendyA (new)

BurgendyA | 105 comments I am reading Kings Row by Henry Bellamann. I decided to read it ever since Anne Rice mentioned in a interview that the novel is her favorite classic, and one of her inspirations for writing The Midwinter Wolves - the second book of the Wolf Gift Chronicles.

I am also reading The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins. Some friends & co-workers have been recommending it to me for awhile now. Another book that I am re-reading is Christine by Stephen King. It's been along time since I've read it & decided to get into the Halloween spirit in reading a good horror.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I finished Inamorata in the wee hours this morning because I couldn't sleep. At least it's done and I don't have to set it aside for a week.

I'll be starting Jhereg and Queen of Abaddon for the toppler today. THey'll also count towards my killer challenge.

message 869: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie That's so awesome, Roz! I really love that book and am always happy to hear that other people love it as well once they've read it :)

message 870: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments I finished Captain Marvel as planned, and all but the last book of Locke & Key, which I'm going to read tonight, just because I want to get level 9 before I read any other book-series books.

I'm reading The Hound of the Baskervilles and Would-Be Witch for the Toppler. Should finish in time, throwing Locke & Key in the middle.

Kristie | 19141 comments I'm the same, Sarah. I need to finish a couple before starting something new.

message 883: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Library holds for audio books that came through have had me adding titles to my current series level beyond the minimum points to kill the level. I am almost on Simon Vance overload. I went from Temeraire # 4 Empire of Ivory to #12 in the Aubrey/Maturin series The Letter of Marque and back to Temeraire #5 Victory of Eagles. The battle with France and Napoleon's forces in the air with dragon Temeraire and his Captain Will Lawrence and on the high seas with Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin is such a contrast, but the wonderful characters make it so worth it.

message 884: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments I'm reading Outcasts United: A Refugee Team, an American Town by Warren St. John. I'm not a fan of soccer, but the book is about so much more than soccer. It's a good book and will probably be a Top Ten of the year for me- at least in non-fiction.

How are you liking the Temeraire series? I read Uprooted a couple months ago and really liked it. Yet, when I read the description of this series it held me back a bit; I think maybe because it seems so different from Uprooted (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it stayed my finger over the mouse button).

Bella,
that book sounds interesting -- thanks

message 888: by Lynda (new)

Lynda | 836 comments Just finished The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (view spoiler) It took me forever to get through it, as I normally read my short stories over breakfast. I just haven't been getting up early enough lately to read anything.

message 889: by Bella (new)

Bella | 502 comments Joan, Outcasts United was very good. It's also the type of book that I think even people who don't normally like non-fiction may like. It's very cinematic is tone and pacing- like a more weighty sports movie.

message 890: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19141 comments I'm currently reading too many books. I'm reading:
You - as a book of the month in another group
As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride - started as an audio fill-in because You was too inappropriate to listen to when other people are around!
The DUFF: Designated Ugly Fat Friend - review from NetGalley: started and put aside for the toppler
Summer Secrets - review from publisher

I'm planning to start The Hangman's Daughter as soon as possible for a buddy read and to make a little more progress on my series challenge, but i need to finish up some the other books first.

I thought As You Wish was charming! I'm so glad that (view spoiler) Just loved The Princess Bride so much.

Who's narrating the audio version? Is it Elwes? I don't normally like audio books, but I may pick it up if he's doing the audiobook.

message 892: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19141 comments Bella - I completely agree with your spoiler! It is narrated By Cary Elwes, but also has Christopher Guest, Carol Kane, Norman Lear, Rob Reiner, Wallace Shawn, Robin Wright, and Billy Crystal narrating some of their their own comments. I'm only about 28% right now. :)

message 893: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Lynda,
I have really enjoyed the Temeraire books. It is so hard to not blow through them! I don't want them to be over. I have only listened to the audio books, so I don't know how they are in print. The dragons are all great characters and Novik does a great job with dialogue and plots. She was influenced by the books by Patrick O'Brian about Captain Jack Aubrey and Doctor Stephen Maturin (Master and Commander is #1) and the tone of her stories bring much of the love of the ships and battles out in her writing. However, the Dragons and air battles are all her own! I have the book you noted on my TBR list.

I think I'll pick up the audiobook soon. I was a teenager when the movie came out and I had such a crush on Cary Elwes. I'm sure I'm not alone in that.

Does anyone use Audible? If I sign up for a trial membership on Audible, I can get one book free. If I don't renew the membership, do I still have access to the book? Or do I have to listen to it during the 30 days.

message 895: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Many of us use audible Bella. Now I'm not positive on this but I honestly think the book would be yours to keep. Audible is usually oretty good and I just don't see them taking it back

The first time I saw the movie was when my oldest daughter was little. I've seen it many times since then. Everyone in my family can quote the movie at this point. You are definitely not alone. Who wouldn't love Cary Elwes from that movie? Listening to this book, he sounds like a genuinely nice guy too.

I have Audible and I love it. I agree with Travis. I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure you keep the book. They may have a FAQ page or something where you can find that answer for certain.

Sarah | 18550 comments Lilisa wrote: "I'm reading Rebel Queen and just started listening to A Darker Shade of Magic."

I saw Darker Shade of Magic on a kindle deal but couldn't decide whether to get it or not. I have way too many series at the moment and didn't want to invest in another unless I knew it was good so do let us know what you think Lilisa!

message 898: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I think I might need the fruit machine to determine which book I continue reading. Or perhaps I'll just ask a random person on the towpath and see how quickly they label me a nutjob. I have lots of books on the go and I feel a little bit like a shark confused by way too many fish in a shoal and so I don't catch (or read) anything. I have on the go The Passage, Shadowshift, The Song of Achilles and John Dies at the End. All at various stages of being read. I'm also supposed to be starting The Hangman's Daughter for the buddy read.
