future group read discussion

I thought about doing a monthly novela group read alongside the novels, I will make a thread and see if anyone its interested in that.

Not sure how long it is as I read it on the kindle but at a guess I'd say not much over 100 pages. Really enjoyable if you like his gross out stuff but this one is almost entirely comprised of gross stuff

the kindle file size for going monstering looks like it is a novel, it is one that has the page count on it and it says 240 pages. I see that the print book is only 164 pages, I'm thinking there must be some kind of bonus for the kindle version or something. the first novella read suggestion thread is up and I am suggesting this over there. it may be hard for me to tell where the 50% point is if there is something extra though.

I have a couple suggestions, first off I am in the mood some Brian Keene. there are a couple I havnt read yet. second, for the novella group I am thinking about suggesting The Minotauress. I read the afterword to one of his other books where he is talking about where he got his ideas for books and said the idea for that one came from a time he was doing a security job in an abandon house and heard a toilet flush upstairs and thought "holy crop what if it was a monster up there taking a dump!"

I didn't realize it was a novella. I heard it has my favorite scumbags from the bighead in it though and the afterwords in Mangled Meat he also mentions that it is a prelude to a novel that I don't remember the name of but I had never heard of it. I will have to look at it when I get home.

Had a look there. It says its two novellas but I honestly can't remember. Got it when it just came out from CD I think

mangled meat just said that minotauress is a novella and is a prequel to the horn cranker. I found this link that says minotaoures is a full length novel that includes the bonus novella the horn cranker. that's all I can find on it though.

They must fit together pretty well. I remember I loved it but had always thought it was just one story. Was going to look it out but everythings packed away because we are decorating

I just read the goodreads info and that lists both books as well and calls minatourass a novel as well so maybe I will suggest it for the next novel group read, it's probably two novellas being listed as a novel since they are sold together.

I might be up for Operator B novella read. It's funny, because on a similar theme I picked up a paperback copy of Inside the Flying Saucers for free at the coffee shop yesterday. Not a horror book, but a funny cheesy read.

I'm not sure I'd vote on operator b but I'd read it if it got picked. Wanted to read it for ages but got so many books ahead of it lol. Think its because I didn't like triage and got told the story in it is similar.

What does everyone think about reading a Richard Laymon book each month along with the normal monthly book and novellas or is better to just do that as buddy reads?

I wud just keep it as a buddy read. I love Laymon so I wud do a Laymon buddy read every month if I could. Seems like he has an extensive collection.

I would get in on buddy reads each month with you. since we are doing three group reads per month now with the novellas we probably shouldn't add any more. if we do buddy reads we don't have to read 25% and then wait a week, we can move on every couple days. I don't want to get to many books that are stretched out over such a long period of time is all. if you want we can make a monthly laymon folder separate from the group read folder with threads for all the buddy reads in it.

I am considering changing my novella suggestion Operator B to Razor Wire Pubic Hair which was recently recommended to me.

Pilo Family Circus is a great read, even though I'm terrified of clowns I made it through! A friend, Daniel I Russell, sent it to me to ensure I read it!
I second The Terror, it looks great.
I'd like to make a suggestion though, Pretty Dead Things by Gary McMahon is a fantastic read...I highly recommend it!

pilo almost won the poll when I suggested it awhile back but it ended uplosing and I hadn't read it yet. it is still bouncing around the top 5 of my tbr for horrors at least. I have been reading a lot of non horror lately also.

are there any short story collections that you would vote on? we could devide the amount of stories in it by the days in the month or two weeks if it is voted in the novella reads and then read one short story per day or every other day to evenly space it out however it works out. I think it would be better for the novella group reads, would anyone vote on dead clown barbeque by Jeff strand maybe?

I was just lent dead clown barbeque through lendle (thanks Kate) so I guess that's out for a group read since I have 2 weeks with it. if you are ready to read it now I will buddy read it with you though addy. any other short story collections anyone would vote for or would everyone rather keep it novellas.

I could do a collection. I want to read Stephen King's Everything's Eventual but its kind of expensive. Maybe one of the Shock Totem collections.

I loved everything's eventual w when I read it years ago and wouldn't mind rereading. I would read either of Addys as well but they wouldn't be my first vote. how about 20th Century Ghosts

Would anyone vote for this? It is described as a dark romantic comedy so it is something a little different but the cover with a bride in wedding gown holding a chainsaw got me. It is about two woman serial killers who get married and kill their husbands, hopefully not something as boring as doing it for money or anything I don't know but the chainsaw gives me hope

There are a bunch of Jack Ketchum books on sale right now, so far I have only read a couple that he co authored and I need to change that, what books of his would people vote for? I bought red and I still have the girl next door and off season. I would be willing to buy something else of his though especially while they are on sale.

Offseason. Seriously, this book completely changed horror for me. I love how his work really pushes the boundaries but still keeps the central story first and foremost. If you could wait another week before starting I would reread it with you.

Yes. I agree. Awesome first read for me. It definitely sticks to you. Even to this day, it gives me the shivers.
