I remember very little about this book. It was assigned reading in 5th grade. It had a dog's face on the cover. The main character's best friend went to the nurse every day with no explanation. At the end they went on some kind of adventure, and the best friend was revealed to have narcolepsy.

When were you in 5th grade? Just trying to get a time frame for when the book might have been published.
You might see if it's one of the Swindle series by Gordon Korman.
