Lucy Steele is an interesting character. She is a pretty, cunning character, but doesn’t have much polish. She befriends Elinor (the main character) and then entrusts with a secret that she knows might cut Elinor deeply, which it does. Ultimately she is a social climber and is looking out for herself. She uses characters innate qualities against (like honor) to get what she wants.

Have you seen either the 1995 movie or the 2008 series?

I don’t think any of the villains are ones to emulate or be like, lol. I don’t think S&S is as easy to read as some of Austen’s others, but Elinor is probably my favorite heroine. She is very resilient. The movie is among my favorite adaptations in general, very good but it takes plenty of liberties too.

My problem with the 2005 version, despite being hard making a comparative between a TV series and a movie, is Mr. Darcy... I don't even know the name of the actor in the movie but Colin Firth will be forever The Mr Darcy! And I love Lizzy in the 1995 version.

Ida, I agree with both your preferences. For me, I don't think Kiera was pretty enough to play Lizzy. And neither was the guy who played Darcy (can't think of his name) handsome enough. Actually, he looked rather goofy. But that is just my opinion. I thought both Jennifer and Colin were perfect casting.

Joanna, Well, bummer. I have to disagree with your assessment of Lucy Steele. For me, she is silly, frivilous, and is completely "out to lunch" as far as intelligence goes. But then, wasn't her characterization spot on when it comes to young, marriagable aged young lady during the Regency period? Their every thought centered on finding a husband. Preferably rich, but not necessarily set in stone. Actually, almost any man would do because the thought of ending up an old maid would be a fate worse than death. She was so feather-headed that she truly did believe her so called "engagement" of long ago to Edward was valid! She was also annoyingly silly. Gossip to her was like cream to a cat. She LOVED sharing secrets and she didn't seem to care who she shared them with. Didn't she even share her "secret" with Edward's hoity sister? But again, this is just my opinion.

In all honesty, we will probably be discussing the same topic in ten years when Hollywood comes out with 2 more Pride And Prejudice movies. I'm just happy they haven't touched 1995 Sense And Sensibility yet.

I am also a writer, mostly of Historical Romances. However, right now I am working on four novels at once. Two are English Historical Romances, One Contemporary Romantic Suspense, and one (please don't laugh) Vietnam War novel. No romance in that one. Yes, maybe, the problem is that, each one we saw first, but to reinforce my love for Colin Firth's Darcy, we don't have other movies, playing characters inspired in Mr. Darcy made with the actor from 2005, eheheh!!

Lauren, I'm joking!! I also love the entire serie, the sisters, the family and the surroundings from the 1995 version, but obviously the serie is more complete than the movie.

I don't think it's a bummer to have different opinions :-). It's been awhile since I have read the book, but it is one of my favorites. I am sure that I don't have it quite right, though. I do not get the impression that she is book smart or intelligent in a philosophical sense. She does come off as silly, but I do think she is cunning in an opportunist sense. Maybe not the most cunning character ever, and certainly she makes what seems to be a misstep with telling Fanny. However, it's hard to argue with the results (view spoiler)[when she ends up married to the second son, whose temperament seems more suited to her, and who gets the inheritance that was originally intended for Edward. I get the impression that fortune is greater than Colonel Branden and certainly more than what Elinor marries into. (hide spoiler)]Really, I marvel out how everything ended up the way she wanted. Pure dumb luck? Maybe, but I think there is a fair bit of cunning to the character.

Yes, I watched Sanditon. And from the first episode, I began planning my schedule around that next segment, and the one after that, and the one after that. I even purchased the entire first season of Sanditon! Now, I'm able to watch it at will.

There is a 2008 BBC mini series of Sense and Sensibility. Andrew Davies wrote the screenplay, and he is also associated with 1995 P&P and Sanditon.

Joanna, Oh, I agree that Lucy was a bit cunning. Finding, catching and managing to hold on to a potential mate back then was a cut throat business for an unattached miss. I did not find Edward all that appealing (at least for me), but hey, a bird in the hand, etc. Except, of course, when you are holding a sparrow when out of the blue an eagle comes along. Can't really blame the girl for exchanging a poor vicar for a monied gentleman.
