I don't know why every one love this novel very much?
what thing cause them to love this novel so much .. some times i think if i misunderstood this novel or i am right in my opinion !!! never know !!!

Great Expectations was a good novel, to me, because of the characters and the circumstances they are placed in. It's a very 19th century English story, so some things need to be explained if you aren't used to the Victorian age. I also listened to the audiobook, which was read by a very excellent British reader, and for some reason, sentences that didn't make sense in my head at first made perfect sense when this reader spoke them. If you're having trouble understanding the book or why it's good, maybe check out the audiobook, or even watch the movie first.

I personally hate this book. There's a ton of unnecessary description, no likable characters, and it's just BORING, overall. But if you're going to read it, I agree with Regina. You've gotta use an audiobook.

How can you possibly be right OR wrong in an *opinion*?

(I think the book, and Dickens in general, could bore the paint off a Ford tractor, but "everyone" (and high school teachers in particular) think he's the Second Coming, so, whatever... De Gustibus non Disputandum, and all that... .)

However, try *this* - Acker *really* does a number on Dickens

@regina thanks for the suggestion . i should see the movie first. but this story goes so dull for me , in the half way i just got so bored !! and cant understand the characters fully and clearly !!

The first time I tried to read this book I had trouble getting into it and quit after a few chapters. Years later I watched the PBS Masterpiece edition and enjoyed it enough to want to try the book again which I ended up loving as well. The story is great as are the characters and watching Pip grow and change his preconceived notions about what is worthy. I notice with lengthy books of this time period, many people saying they are boring, too many descriptions, nothing happens in much of it etc. It seems that people don't realize that these weren't put out as a complete novel but issued in weekly serials over the course of a year or more. It would be like cramming a whole television series into one long movie, most would find bits of that pretty boring or over detailed too. ;)

@dramapuppy i am totally agree with you, this book is totally boring !!!

Charles dickens writes brilliant stories, but i think the tv adaptations really bring them to life. Check out the BBC adaptaions they did for his 200th birthday last year if you can get hold of them, they are fantastic.

Eh...it was okay. Not too bad, but not too good either. I wouldn't recommend it.

Great Expectation has a great plot and characters. That being said it is lengthy and a bit rambling. My advice would be to find a good abridged version so you can get the fun story more quickly, or to listen to the audiobook.

I started reading it a few months ago and I could not finish it yet because I found it boring....
The plot and the characters were ok, but what really pissed me off was that the action was so slow; it was like every character was doing every thing in slow motion.
Honestly, I do not know if I am going to read the hole book despite of the fact that some of my favorite book are classics. :)

Tom George I dragged myself through it, just cos I wanted to say I'd read it. Everyone has to read something by Dickens...I thought. Anyway, I was surprised that ...more

The 1st half of the book is super boring - i couldn't connect with the characters, the plot was too slow and confusing, etc

But then i started to understand it and in the end i liked it. Can't say it was one of the best things I've read, but i was glad i didn't gave up reading it (i was really close to doing that).

Worth a read but definitely not his best. Start with David copperfield. You'll thank me.

It's just the style of writing back in those days that makes it hard to read. If you don't know the story and want to, just check out the movie. Great stuff!

Keri The movie was good but I found the PBS Masterpiece Theater adaption from 2011 to be much better. :)
