Missing by Patrick Modiano translated from the French This is an unusual type of mystery by the 2014 Nobel prize winner.
It's about a detective who has amnesia. It's a short book translated from the French. It's quite different from the usual books his group reads.
Perhaps it's not to everyone's taste but I personally think it's the best book I've read in ages.

I love Modiano's work.
I'd like to recommend Penny Warner's Code Busters book number one in the series.Summer is here and this is a great way to get your kids hooked on the same genre as you enjoy.
There's a really neat little collection of clues [paper cyphers etc] included which gives the reader a hands-on experience.
This works if you have an independent reader, but during the lazy hazy days you might enjoy reading with them.
Richard Montanari The Doll Maker by Richard Montanari - It does say it is #8 in the Jessica Balzano & Kevin Byrne series; however, I haven't read any of this series so I can't answer whether we can enjoy if new to series. I'm hoping someone else in the Group might know. The excerpts look good and I'm a little partial to the Philadelphia/Philly burb setting. If this one's good, I'll go back and read 1-7 in Series.Follow-up Note: A fellow member (Jo) indicated she has read this series and this book; and, yes, it can be enjoyed alone for a book club read.

The Secret of the Skeleton Key, by Penny Warner -- I'll leave it, but I'm not really sure children's books actually fit here.

It doesn't look like this has been released yet.
Jennifer wrote: "Id like to nominate the second book from the greek island mysteries series, THE CHURCH MURDERS. its a stand alone so no worries at it being book 2. an amazing thriller."
The Church Murders, by Luke Christodoulou.
The Church Murders, by Luke Christodoulou.
I nominate The Strangler Vine. Takes place in India in 1837. Just read a review and it looks interesting. I think widely available - I have a copy coming from the library.

I just bought this a while back.

I just looked at my Patrick Modiano book and there are actually three mysteries. His books are short. The actual title of the bookIs Suspended Sentences. Because he won the Nobel prize for literature it is very widely available. And so wonderful. I have read it in French and English and the English translation is one of the best I've ever seen.

Patriot A.S. Bond"Patriot" by A S Bond was a finalist in the 2015 Indie Book Awards and #1 in Kindle store during recent promotion. I really enjoyed this book, it's fast paced with plenty of twists and it's great to have a female lead in this genre for a change!
I'd like to second "Patriot" by A.S. Bond. Thrilling female-driven actioner, and very visual. Loved it!

I keep hoping so, Jan. But, I've nominated it several times and it only comes close, at best. [sigh]...
But, you are right. It is a gem of a book. I also like the other 2 of the series that I've read, The Blood-Dimmed Tide and The Dead of Winter, and have the 4th, The Reckoning, on hold at the librry.

I have the second and third but haven't read them yet.
How does this work? I'm new to the group, and haven't yet seen any discussion of last month's picks.
Welcome, Chris. Each book has its own thread under "Group Read Discussions."

I'd like to nominate my own book. Don't know if it's okay to do so, though. The book's available on smashwords/amazon/createspace etc - both physical and digital formats. and if selected & required, I can give a free e-book download coupon. The book's called 'operation jai mata di'. It's a book on the world's largest hostage incident in Jammu & Kashmir.

Actually, Pratik, if you read rule #2, it says
'2) "Please read this next sentence carefully: Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted."
So I suppose that's a no.

Once again we need to post the general rules for Group Reads nominations:
1) Important: If your nomination wins, you will be the discussion moderator. Please do not nominate a book unless you're willing to do this. NOTE: If a book you've nominated in the past won and you did not participate in the discussion, we will NOT consider your nominations in the future. Sorry to be hardcore on this, but it's happened twice now within the last year.
2) One (1) nomination only per person. Please read this next sentence carefully: Neither self-nominations by authors nor nominations by their respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.
3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.
4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. For the sake of expediency, here's the list or you can just look back through May of last year going forward, and you'll know which authors NOT to include.
5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).
6) Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. The last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.
7) Finally, a word about series - Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series, or if it can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.
Let's see what you can come up with!
