Lover Unbound
question
Least favorite book and character(s)

J.R. Ward does a fantastic job writing the Black Dagger Brotherhood (BDB) series and I have all the books including the Insider's Guide, but after reading "Lover Reborn" I started thinking about the characters and books. I started wondering which book and character(s) were least liked.
Personally, "Lover Unbound" is my least favorite book for one reason: Ward went too far out there by bringing Doc Jane back as a ghost. I realize paranormal romance itself is out there but there was something wrong with bringing her back as a ghost-it was too unbelievably fake and cliche quite frankly. I think another reason I like this book even less than "Lover Reborn" is because I nearly dropeed the whole series after reading it (I'm glad I didn't). That said, "Lover Reborn" is a close second on the least favorite list becuase the ending was overly corny and it made Tohr an a**h**e.
Until "Lover Reborn" Tohr was high on my favorites list but after using Autumn, being overly verbally aggressive to the point of abuse and (Worst of all) keeping Wellsie's ashes he's my least favorite. I wouldn't be surprised if he's now the most hated BDBrother. At first, I tried to say his attitude was because he was still grieving for his shellan, but he kept her ashes! He knew he had to release them in a traditional Fade Ceremony in order for her to pass into the Fade, but he was deplorably selfish and kept them!
Autumn (No'One) was weak, spineless and she had no self esteem at all. She degraded herself to the point where I was disgusted. She has a lot of issues and should definately go see Havers about them. If John Matthew can grow a set and talk about his problems, so can she.
All that said, which book and character(s) are your least favorite? Why?

I still haven't read Lover Reborn as I feel it's too soon for Tohr to be at this stage yet. But reading your two comments it sounds like I'm going to want to smack Ward for doing this to Tohr. I liked him, Darius, and Phury right off the bat when I started this series. And I would hate to see the down fall of Tohr. He has been steadfast and sure from the get go til the Wellsie incident. And even after they found him and he was finally getting better with eating and everything, I was thinking he was going to start doing better too. But to read that she regressed him to some caveman like idiocy is really sad.
Back to the original question at hand though. I would say my least favorite book was Dark Lover. I tried my best to like that book. But Wrath and Beth just were NOT ideal for me at all in that book. Wrath in particular being too cocky and full of himself at times. Actually to the point of being a jackass. Beth, even though she gets in a few shots of her own back at him. Still wound up lapping up his foolery at times like it was the best thing since sliced bread. Even worse was the fact was how things were handled or rather not handled with regards to Marissa and even to Beth's relationship with Darius.
I mean there were many opportunities for Wrath to explain that he was feeding from Marissa even though he wasn't physically sleeping with her. But he never once really explained any of that to Beth at all. Even when at one point she pretty much did a point blank question his way. He wasn't copping to anything with Marissa at all. Which I hated that as he treated Marissa like such a non-person. I know many say Marissa was so weak and should have just moved on, on her own. But given the beliefs of their world? Even the standing of the females in said world? Are you kidding me? Cause the say I see it. Their old country values are akin to women of the victorian era more or less. Don't have much upward mobility in society if you don't have the right connections and right male of sorts in your family/head of household. So for Wrath to keep on dissing and lying about her was really crass to me.
As for the stuff with Darius and Beth. I hated that too. I mean at the start of the book before Darius is killed, he comes to Wrath and ask him to look after his daughter. Which more or less happens in one fashion or another. But what I don't get is why there were never any pictures or special momentos or memories really shared with Beth ABOUT Darius at all! I get they have to keep a low secretive profile. But of all things, the only thing Beth has of her dad is the house/fort they live in and the stinking butler and Wrath not having shared any special memories or anything really. That just blows my mind. I mean he wouldn't even have a shellan if it wasn't for Darius asking him to look after her in the first place.
So yea Wrath and Beth are top least faves for me and their book. But Wrath totally stays on my shit list the way he is the least helpful with anything all that important in the following books. After the both of these characters, I would have to say Bella and Zsadist in varying degrees are my least fave. Z before he met Bella(major ahole in my opinion) and then when Bella met Z(totally read like typical society princess character seeks out bad boy for good time). Not only that but I wasn't too fond of the mixed messages Bella kept throwing Phury's way.
I know she probably didn't get the full extent of how much he liked her at first. But moving into the fortress they were all shacking up in. I think it would have been pretty obvious. But no, Ward had her keep on making him food, brushing his hair(in my eyes doing shellan like privileges) and then acting all innocent like she didn't know why he would react the way he did. As what she was doing was something akin to what is considered taking "skin privileges" in Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling books. Which are pretty intimate rights only someone that is going to be or is YOUR mate can do to/for you. Not just a friend.
I will also have to throw Havers and Xhex's mother. Keeping in mind I still haven't read Lover Reborn yet. But in the past books just reading about the actions of both of these characters, even in a supporting/side character role left a sour taste in my mouth. Mainly cause Havers was trying to go all old world on Marissa and be all "I am man and what I say goes". That really pissed me off. And getting back to Xhex's mom, from her past background I could almost feel sorry. But when you hold her up to the ultimate abuse victim of this series Bella and Rehv's mom, there is just no comparison and Xhex's mom totally didn't even try. I know it's not fair to compare one person's strength of will against another's. But my goodness the contrast is surreal. And if I'm being frank and honest enough. I was happy that the Scribe Virgin cast her as No'one. Cause truly she was no one special in the least by her actions.
And lastly to wrap this up before I catch my nap. I would have to say my last least favorite character of the series has been Layla. At first when she was introduced I was really intrigued by her. But with Ward having paired off everyone else. And she has given Layla all this sex knowledge she can't use on anybody. I totally feel like Ward abandoned her out there. And now it's like any time you see Layla, she is dropping robes and towel and anything just to get some attention from anybody. Even volunteering to give blood left and right and even clinging to a fragile friendship with Qhuinn as she totally has no purpose whatsoever in the story. I revert back to Ward on this. As it seemed like she did a great job giving Layla some purpose and a mission and even some ambition. But it's like she totally has built her up to wither her away. Bad use of a character all the way.

I started the dive at Phury's book and then again with Payne's. I liked the rest some less than others but I'm hoping that Ward can redeem the series.
My least favorite is Payne's book. I understood Phury because he is drug addict and celibite dealing with a virgin that knew nothing of this world. I havent started reading Thors or Qhuay's books yet. I am scared based on the reviews that they are not up to par as the first 6. I will try to give the benefit of the doubt since it probably gets real hard to come up with something new after 6 books.
My least favorite charecters are Lash (For obvious reasons) and Lassiter, which as far as charecters go, is useless. He's just annoying and comes off like an ass. I'm also not a big fan of Havers for what he did to his sister. He's lucky The Brotherhood didn't kill him!!!!
Phury's story really bugged me. I just came off felling like he and Cormia really should not be together. We're talking about a Chosen who has only ever know the Nontemporal Realm. During V's story, she was basically being punished for wanting something more for herself. She was terrified of the idea of mating with V. I get the fact that she was sort of Phury's savior from his addiction, but the whole storyline left me a little disgusted. Up until that point all the females were like Phury is so nice and he has great hair and he suffers so much for his twin. Yeah he looks pretty, BUT when you get underneath all those layers, he's really ugly. It just seems like this pairing is a little codependant. And that a bunch of Chosen decided to leave the other side seemed a bit too far fetched.
Francine, you will be happy to know that the next BDB book is going to feature Rhage and Mary. I've seen some stuff about it, and it sounds like the storyline is going to be interesting. I'm excited!!!!!!! I love those two!!!!!!

My least favourite book was Lover Enshrined. The way how Jr reduced Phury to some drug junkie was awful and will he/won't he love his mate and the constant whining and pining for Bella was just bad. I was like get over her already! I could not wait for the book to be over so that I could start the next one.

The Blay/Qhuinn book. It's complete bullshit and not a real stab at MM in NY. The book itself seems contrite, not really about them, as a couple but about them struggling to find each other, which I'm good with but man...I did the "write a MM thing for money thing" way before it was cool.

least favourite book was book 6 Lover Enshrined I don`t think I can feel the same about Phury after reading that ,it was grim reading at a certain point.
May be at some point I may try reading it again but I wont be in a rush

I'm not finished with the series, yet. I'm up to the Insider's Guide at the moment. Overall, I love the series and the first three books are my favorites. When it came to books 4, 5 and 6, I thought Butch/Marissa and Phury/Cormia were two of the most whiny emo angst fueled couples that I've ever encountered in literature. Worse than Twilight's Bella and Edward. At least, those two were teenagers. They were so annoying that I actually liked the different side stories and plot lines that other readers complain about because it gave me time away from them. I love the boys (John Matthew, Quinn and Blay). I don't know if I like Rehvenge per se, but he's definitely interesting. I liked Vishous' book for the most part, but like many others, I didn't understand the point of making Doc Jane a (view spoiler) . I think the literary term for something like that is technically a "deus ex machina" ending. I overlooked it in Rhage and Mary's story. (Mary technically should have (view spoiler) ) But then it happened again with Vishous and Doc Jane. I still don't understand why Rhage and Vishous get a divine intervention HEA but Tohrment didn't get one with Wellsie. I'm hoping there is some point to it all or something more to be revealed when I get to Tohment's book.
Ugh, so much infuriates me about this series.
John M and Xhex had so much promise, then big disappointment.
I hate a lot of the weak heroines, including Marissa (gag), Cormia (Booorrring), Layla (doormat) and No'one (please). BUT the worst is the Scribe Virgin. All her "decisions" are so random and don't make any sense. If she has so much power, then WHY let Wellsie die like that.
Same story over and over, getting weaker and weaker as the series goes on.
Fave characters (Butch, Tohr, Vishous, John) getting robbed by having to be matched up with sucky/dead mates...
I agree the "ghost" Doc Jane was really one of the last straws for me.

Ohhh...I'm currently reading book 7 -- Lover Avenged...so I can't say my least fave yet :)...So far I love all as all books are interrelated..
What about Lover Mine, neither JM or Xhex are likable,I found their story drawn out and boring. So much so that I stopped reading the series for a while.
My least favorite is Phury's book. She definitely got into the mind of an addict and then she didn't know how to find her way back. So she ends up with him magically getting clean, the chick is just a cypher and not really worth remembering. My biggest problem is the plot hole that is the Scribe Virgin, she tosses that one out as a bandage or a quick fix. But it just ends up getting confused because she wants to use her as a character too. You can't make some magical god work in mysterious ways then also have that same god as someone's parent.
I actually loved the series up to Z's book, but it's like she figured out her world until that point then it got popular so she had to scrabble to come up with more stories. I like most of the books fairly well, V's Butch's and Phury's are never going to be in my re-read pile. She wussed out on the V/Butch thing, those two love each other more than they will ever love either of their mates. I actually want to read about the Bastards and find out what happens with Muhrder. And I guess at the end of the day that's all a book nerd can hope for not greatness but goodness from each and every book.

My least favorite character has to be Phury. And my favorites are Rhage, Jhon Matthew and Rehvenge.
Phury's book is probably my top disliked BDB book. Although, I didn't totally love Lover Mine (JM was just a capital ass throughout and I'm not a fan of Xhex). I enjoyed Payne's book (not because of Payne & Manny) only because it was more of the follow-up story for Vishous. I am so disinterested in Tohr's story that I haven't read Lover Reborn yet. Lover At Last was good, but seemingly had more subplots than usual which took away from Q/B. And, finally the Layla story can end now... she just irritates me and is my least favorite Chosen.
My least favourite book in the series is Lover Reborn. I also don’t like Lover Enshrined but it was saved by the awesome, superb Qhuinn/John/Lash subplot so I can’t hate it too much. I also don’t like Lover Revealed.
What do all these books have in common? They have a weak, subservient love interest. Some of them have Chosen as a love interest and I don’t like Chosens all that much. The only, only exception being Payne (she was kick-ass and awesome) They are irritate the living hell out of me. Especially Layla. How many times must we hear how beautiful she is? We get it already.

I have to say muy least favorite book in the series is Lover Enshrined... Phury just doesn´t do it for me... He and Cormia are utterly boring and the book was only saved by the parallel stories, i.e. Qhuinn, Blay and John Matthew as well as Rehv.
Second least favorite book is debatable but I think either Lover Reborn or Lover Revealed...

Least favorite book will be Lover Reborn. I have never finished a book with so much disappointment and anger. Even Phury's book which I thought was not very good or Payne's I was able to finish them and say oh well but with Lover Reborn I had to delete the ebook from my nook because I was so angry.
My whole BDB world that I loved came crashing down with this book. I really disliked no'one and felt that she did not deserve 300 years of in-between with the ability to have sex and feed another male when she killed herself while a victim and her child was fading away in less than three years.
I used to love Tohr because of his love for his shellan but now I really dislike him because everything he said in books 1-9 where easily swept away. So now Tohr is my least favorite brother and I hate his book so much that I have dropped the series. : (

Phury's book sucked, cant stand him, the only thing I like that he's done in any of the books is when he threw Qhuinn against the wall in Lover at Last - that book sucked too!
Cormia is a weak hollow character and Phury adn her deserve eachother, I'm so glad they moved out of the mansion, now I dont have to put up with them.
Payne and her book sucked. From hte moment I was introduced to Payne in Rehv's book I disliked her. And then she had to go nad get with Manny who I disliked even more. GAH!
Thor's book wasnt any better. And I really done like No'One or Autumn which ever you want to call her.
I agree that Ward went too far in bringing back Jane as a ghost. It'd be different if there were other ghost-like characters but there arent, she's the only one.
I really wish there were more Rhage and Mary featured in the books.
Lover at Last - Qhuinn's book was the worst of all. I had to FORCE myself to finish it, just because I'm loyal to hte series and it's a part of it.
I used to like Qhuinn, but now I'm not so sure. I understand him being all tough nad such because of his past, but did he really have to turn into a pansy?
I'm going to have to add how much I LOVE Darius. Even though he was just featured as a living character for a few pages. he made such an impact, every time he's mentioned I cant help but feel a wave of emotion. Why did he have to die? WHY?

i didnt enjoy phurys book the most because there was so much self pity! and it was self inflicted by that blockeheaded male. however nothing could put me off the series, because i have not found a series that catches my interest like this one did in a year or so. So i will toil onward in my pain
Hmmmmmm
Least favourite book has to be Phury's...nothing against him but i felt like strangling him most of the time so darn slow and indecisive, the book was hardly about 'them'
Characters???
The sympath 'queen/king' I hated her, keeping Rhevenge under her control for sex -____-
Saxton I dislike a bit because I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Qhuinn and he is upsetting my boy. That and he is a man whore.
I started to dislike Thor for his treatment of Autumn ( I ranted as I read) It wasn't called for and it wasn't once it was several times he was a real dick

Personally, I liked V's book, even liked Jane, right up until the "ghost" thing. It was a hard pill to swallow, but I got over it fairly quickly.
Phury's books was just blah. I honestly don't like "overly tough" heroines, particularly the kind that seem to think that a man who cares about her and needs to protect her is somehow anti-feminist (another rant for another day). But these Chosen gals, geeze, they are just way too feminine marshmallow for my taste. They were essentially kept in a glorified "spiritual" whorehouse waiting for some man to "choose" them. So from my perspective, they just weren't going to make good heroines from the git go. Thus why Phury's book was a disappointment I think.
I think Phury's book is where it started slipping, but I did enjoy Rev's book. Paynes was a bit stale, but not terrible for me.
Ah, but then we got Tohrs book, and I'm sorry, but it was just horrible. Before reading it I was apprehensive about how soon it was for Tohr, but I tried to be optimistic and was looking forward to seeing what clever way she found to make Tohr being with someone else ok for the fans.
She didn't, and for me, it wasn't. I, too, was a bit disinterested as far as Tohr was concerned in the early part of the series. As a married man, and "off the market" so to speak, I didn't think much about him one way or another. He seemed like a steady loyal guy and Wellsey a caring nurturing mate. His "going nuts" after Wellsey's death was understandable. But in Lover Reborn, he was just horrible to No'one/Autumn to the point of abusive. I couldn't relate any of his actions to "loving" her, and her's was more that of a woman with battered wife syndrome. Aside from that, I was seriously peeved that the rest of the heroic household, including her daughter and son in law, saw it all going on and said nothing.
But most of that has been covered here, so I won't rant on or deliver too many spoilers. I can only say I have serious doubts as to whether I'm going to continue this series, and at the moment, I'd lay my bets on me probably not bothering. I prefer m/f romances in the first place, and given how far downhill the series has gone, I can't see purchasing another book that isn't really my cup of tea to begin with.

I enjoyed this set of books but like most people, I have one or two that I found a big letdown Phury's book was not what I thought would come out of his story and how it ended left a bad taste in my mouth.
Payne's books was more about how V was dealing with having a sister and his sex habits then actually learn more about Payne's only that she does not like her mother and never had a male lover before.
Due to this I have left Lover Reborn but it’s on my to- read. I have been hearing a lot of mix reviews so I just have to wait and see.
I am hoping Qhuay and Bladelock story can redeem my interested if not I more than like drop the set of books.
Sorry about the spelling mistakes if any

For me, the series started to Die with Phury's book, had a brief recovery with John Matthew's, and then plunged right off my radar with Payne's. I barely made it through that one and haven't read Tohr's.
I won't go near her message boards now after my very vanilla comments stating how unimpressed I was with Payne's story were heavily edited to the point that all of my concrit was removed.
I'm conflicted over the Q/B book coming because I've wanted them together forever, but I just can't bring myself to buy another one of her books.

To date, with all the books concerning this series Lover Unbound remains my least fave of the series. I think V got totally screwed on his mate & HEA and I am still utterly ticked about it. But I was too in love with the series as a whole to even think about giving up on it. But yeah V's book was the worst one for me.
The worst Mates/couples for me in this series is definitely V/Jane & JM/Xhex.

Danielle, I agree with most of what you said. Until 'Lover Reborn' Tohr was kind of indifferent for me, actually. But this book was the worse, personally speaking, and I was really disappointed. People who know me knows how this is huge 'cause I'm totally insane about BDB. I agree that Autumm has issues, but I liked her. I see her as a strong person, able to stand after all that has been done to her and actually give herself to someone else. But I don't like them together. I started hating Tohr for the way he treated her and yeah, sometimes I was angry with her too for allowing it.
J.R. couldn't convince me putting them together. In fact, she wouldn't have convinced me with anyone writing Tohr the way she did and, as the second review says, their relationship was too much focused on sex. I didn't see ONE single reason for her to fall in love with him. I think, since book 3, that Wellsie shouldn't have died. Not only for the obvious reasons, but because it was supposed for Tohr to go on without her. And this went against everything J.R. wrote aboud the bonding - the best thing about this series for me - and the everlasting connection between sheellan and Hellren.
For me, Autumm came as a "conformation prize" and for all she's been through, I think she deserved a hell lot more. She deserved to be loved unconditionally and completely, not to settle as someone else's shaddow. And that's what she'll be, for all the brotherhood. Someone who cannot be compared to Wellsie and all the wonder she has been. That's just wrong and kind of cruel.
But I still love the BDB, and probably nothing can change that. I'm out-of-my-head anxious about LAL and one of my fav couples, Qhuay. I think this book has the potentional for being the best. Even better than Lover Awakened, and Z - that's my favorite brother. My baby (L)
Well, anyway. Let's see what J.R. has in store for us :)

I agree and disagree with most of what you've said. Though the whole ghost thing with Doc Jane was stretching it a bit all that did was piss me off more and think...well V got his woman back as a ghost and Mary got her cancer cured but how come that didn't happen with Tohrment? Just like he thinks in his book, why does everyone else get their HEA and not him.
When Lover Reborn came out I was sort of hoping for some kind of miracle, out of this world, return of Wellsie. Of all the books, Reborn is my most hated because I just couldn't see the connection between Tohr and Autumn. I'm in the process of rereading this book actually as I always reread the series before a new book comes out and I'm hoping my opinion of it will improve but from what I can remember of my first go-round with this book, I doubt it. All I remember is, as you mentions Danielle, a lot of violence from Tohr.
Now I can understand his attitude is going to change, especially after losing the love of his life that he was with for over 50 years but his dramatic mood swings were worse than a mid-life crisis, PMS, PTSD and road rage combined. Plus, I felt she focused far too much in this book on the bedroom. There were a lot more sex scenes in this book than the others and that really detracted from the storyline in my opinion.
I really enjoy the other brothers and their stories and I would be hard pressed to name a second least favorite. And I can't tell you my favorite yet because it won't be out until March 26th lol.
