The Passenger
Book the first: a collection of N.K. Jemisin's short stories and a preface that explains as deeply as any current writer can what necessitates the writing process and why short prose exists. Of course it's excellent, and she's still the boss of Bostonians.
Second book: a glimpse into a past that seems to be arcing around like Ringworld into the present. There's something very unsettling about the tendency of ours as an apex species to make each other into prey.

Ancillary Justice
Translation State
I think if you're into philosophy, loved when Data went on trial in TNG, or just want a book that plays with gender and self, this is the book to try.
