10. Is there any significance in Devlin being able to sleep in Amelia’s place? Do you like Amelia so far? Do you like the way she interacts with Devlin? What’s with Devlin’s silver medallion he wears? It knocks the wind out of her?
Is it because her house is on hallowed ground and the ghosts can’t quite get to him? Even though the little girl was able to get into the yard, she hadn’t entered the house. Yet. So for the first time since their death, he didn’t feel their pull on him. I’m curious about her reaction to his medallion. I wonder if he can see ghosts, but the medallion blocks his gift and that’s why she reacted to it. But then, why didn’t it affect her earlier when she was close to him? Why only when she tried to specifically look at it?
11. Any thoughts on the angels Amelia’s father is restoring: “all fifty-seven with nothing more than patience and a set of vintage masonry tools”? Why is Amelia suddenly seeing the first ghost she ever saw “after all these years”? Is he really only a messenger? If so, is her father right about the ring?
Maybe since her father is taking such care with restoring these statues it’s to let us know that he would have also taken care with his daughter’s upbringing. But at the same time interesting. He warns her not to tempt fate, to ignore ghosts and avoid the haunted, and yet he spent his life tending graveyards and now restoring these statues. Two things inextricably linked to the dead.
I’m also curious why that particular ghost showed up again. A messenger, but of what? He first appeared when she first came in to her power. Is she about to experience another big change in her life? And I wonder if the ring needs to go to Devlin?
12. Do you think Afton Delacourt’s murder 15 years ago is connected to the current crime spree? Is the Order of the Coffin and the Claw definitely involved? Who could be a member of this secret society? Any suspicions? Or are you like me, and suspect everyone. LOL!
Oh, I hope so. That makes it all so much more interesting. Secret societies, long buried secrets, digging skeletons out of the closet. Just how far does the conspiracy spread through this town?
13. Book Quote: (view spoiler) Eep! What a visual! Or was it too cliché for you? Comments.
I didn’t mind this particular visual, but here have been other moments in this book that border on melodramatic. There is a fine line, for me, between a good atmospheric read and an over-the-top melodramatic read and this one occasionally crossed into the later category. Especially when she’s drooling over Devlin.
14. Another character is introduced: Charleston County coroner, Regina Sparks. Comments on her personality? I totally think there is something to the symbols on the gravestones. Are you with me on this?
I like her! Like her sense of humor and energy. If this is all tied in to the Coffin and Claw Society then most definitely there is significance to which graves the bodies are being found on. Is it the winged effigy, maybe helping a soul to cross back and forth through the opened doorway?
15. Devlin’s wife was a student of Dr. Rupert Shaw? Interesting. Comments?
I’m wondering if her death is in some way tied in with the murders. She knew something, saw something, maybe her death wasn’t an accident? She and Devlin fought about it just before her death?
16. Book Quote:(view spoiler) Eep! What was this shadowy creature?
That was weird. A ghost? Something that crossed through the door that had been opened. It seems to be targeting our main character. And Devin didn’t seem to be as surprised or suspicious as you might think he would have been….
17. What do you think about Tom Gerrity? His “gift”? Why did Devlin’s wife back away from that strange – or rather, creepy – ménage à trios immediately when Tom Gerrity’s name was mentioned?
He is now one of the more intriguing characters for me. He has some past with Devlin that prevents him from speaking to him directly. Something that may involve Devlin’s wife. They also call him “The Prophet”. Isn’t that a title from one of the other books in this series? For some reason, I don’t yet distrust him, which actually makes me suspicious. But I feel like he is one of those misunderstood characters who is really trying to help. Maybe making amends for a past wrong.
18. Now that you’ve heard Temple Lee’s story (Chapter 12) of Dr. Camille Ashby (who originally recommended Amelia’s services to Devlin), what is your impression of her? To backtrack to the end of Chapter 8, how do you think eavesdropping on Camille’s conversation with Devlin was a “turning point” in Amelia’s relationship with Devlin: by its content or her decision to do so? Or something else?
Temple = horny gossiper. I did crack up over ‘fangasm’ though. Interesting that she seems to know or have knowledge of all the players. She was spilling the beans left and right until Amelia brought up the Coffin and Claw, then she couldn’t brush it off fast enough. Interesting.
Amelia when to the graveyard to talk to Camille, but herself admitted that she was hoping to run in to Devlin. I think this is all meant to show her growing fascination with him and mix it with a little distrust.
19. What did you think of Ethan Shaw and Daniel Meakin? Did either of these two stand out to you? One more than the other?
I’m not sure what to make of either of these yet, but I’m sure we’ll be seeing them again.

#1 – I got this distinct impression, since she differentiates her mothers, but not her father.
#2 – Yes, they aren’t somewhere I’d want to be at night. When I was growing up, a good friend’s older brother-in-law took her to a cemetery to learn how to drive, and I went along. I thought it an excellent place and took my nephew there to do the same decades later.
#7 – Ah! Interesting. I don’t think I thought of that.
#8 – Oh! I like the way your mind works.

#1 – Love your answer, Christine. Gave me pause for thought. True, about the “dull” life/much of a book. LOL!
#2 – Ah, yes, I agree, though it doesn’t bother me. And, like you, at this point I find it more mysterious than creepy.
#3 – O.M.G. I just had an epiphany while reading your answer! Remind me to tell you when this book is over. Great answer, BTW.
#4 – Great points. Yes, then why not destroy her computer, too? And now, with “clouds” – it would seem impossible for someone trying to cover something up to do!
#5 – Nope. She’s isn’t easily scared.
#6 – Now, that’s a different way to look at their reason for hanging around. Hmmm… Yes, I was perplexed as to why she buried it there, too, for the reasons you stated.
#7 – Good points!
#9 – Loved this answer.
Glad you liked the questions, Christine!

#10 – Yeah, I understand how she would be attracted to him, too. LOL! Hmm…still not getting why a talisman would knock the wind out of her. However, it is important in later chapters to remember that he WEARS this medallion when he tells Amelia how he feels about them.
#11 – Ditto! Ditto! Ditto!
#13 – I thought so, too…on both counts. LOL!
#14 – Yes, are you listening to the audio book? The narrator does such a great job of making all the Southern accents sound distinctly different; love how she makes Regina sound.
#16 – Yeah, me either!
#18 – Yes, I agree. Don’t know how reliable Temple is.

I wonder if the medallion is what the ghosts use to stay close to him.
11) The restoration of 57 angels with only those tools would be time consuming. I think she is seeing the first ghost because she is not following the rules anymore. Her father did say once you open a door you can't shut it. She opened one by bending the rules.
12) I do think the murders are a long time seperated. After watching all the crime shows I watch I think they just haven't found them all.
I think the college groups are either involved or know who was the murderer is.
I suspect everyone.
13) I can see the visual. It is kind of cliche. Just once I'd like it to be s foot or knee.
14) The symbols are going to prove to be revealing. I had heard the rose one before. I want to learn more.
Regina Sparks, her personality and physical discription seem to match her name.
15) Devlin's wife being a student under Dr. Shaw is interesting. Everything is connected. I find that interesting.
16) I think this is one of the entities Amelia's father called the others. More dangerous and stronger than a ghost.
17) I am confused by the fact that he seems to just appear and disappear. Now he doesn't touch her ar really bget close. Also he knows things he shouldn't.
I wonder if there was a problem during her life involving Gerrity or he isn't human.
18) It explains why Dr. Ashby seems to be resentful of strong woman.
I think it was a turning point because of Amelia's decision to have one. She allowed herself to be more open to him.
19) My opinion is there is something off with one or both of them. Just aren't innocent but I think I'm really suspecting everyone. Leaning toward Daniel but not sure why.

10. Is there any significance in Devlin being able to sleep in Amelia’s place? Do you like Amelia so far? Do you like the way she interacts with Devlin? What’s with Devlin’s silver medallion he wears? It knocks the wind out of her?
The fact that Devlin can sleep in her house shows that her house is protected. I guess you can't sleep well when you are haunted. Ha Ha. There is something about Devlin, maybe the medallion. But I gather it is more than that.
11. Any thoughts on the angles Amelia’s father is restoring: “all fifty-seven with nothing more than patience and a set of vintage masonry tools”? Why is Amelia suddenly seeing the first ghost she ever saw “after all these years”? Is he really only a messenger? If so, is her father right about the ring?
The ghost being seen again is something. And her dad said he was a messenger. Interesting. Especially that her dad knows this. And her dad can see the "others" I am thinking that is the door that Amelia just opened. Now she can see the "others." To return the ring Amelia would have to find out who the girl is. Which means more relations with Devlin.
12. Do you think Afton Delacourt’s murder 15 years ago is connected to the current crime spree? Is the Order of the Coffin and the Claw definitely involved? Who could be a member of this secret society? Any suspicions? Or are you like me, and suspect everyone. LOL!
I am guessing the Coffin & Claw society are tied to both. Maybe not the same people. But maybe. And everyone that went to Emerson is a suspect in my eyes too.
13. Book Quote: [ A skeletal hand rising out of the dead leaves like an early spring crocus.” (hide spoiler)] Eep! What a visual! Or was it too cliché for you? Comments.
Maybe the ring goes on the hand that was risen.
14. Another character is introduced: Charleston County coroner, Regina Sparks. Comments on her personality? I totally think there is something to the symbols on the gravestones. Are you with me on this?
The symbols are part of it, along with the society. They both go together.
15. Devlin’s wife was a student of Dr. Rupert Shaw? Interesting. Comments?
Very interesting. And she knew a lot....
16. Book Quote:[The air went very still and I sensed hesitation, like an animal sizing up its prey. Then the weeds parted violently, as though an invisible scythe cut a path straight toward me. Whatever it was, it came at me like a freight train, preceded by an unnatural chill the like of which I’d never felt before. I stood there breathless and immobile, bound by a nightmarish paralysis. (hide spoiler)] Eep! What was this shadowy creature?
The door is opened. She can see the others now.
17. What do you think about Tom Gerrity? His “gift”? Why did Devlin’s wife back away from that strange – or rather, creepy – ménage à trios immediately when Tom Gerrity’s name was mentioned?
Hmmm. He is creepy. And Devlin's wife finds his presence a bad presence, so she knew (or should I say knows) Tom Gerrity. And why is he called the "Prophet?" Time will tell which side he is on. We will be hearing from him some more. Devlin seems to have a list going of people he doesn't want to associate with.
I think it sheds a different light on Camille. Maybe to make us more suspicious of her. But I am not sure I am ready to go there yet. I do think it was a turning point, because the two murders are connected, and connected to the society, and Dr. Shaw's belief about death will play a part in Amelia's life.
19.What did you think of Ethan Shaw and Daniel Meakin? Did either of these two stand out to you? One more than the other?
Ethan Shaw's father is enough to make me suspicion of him and Daniel Meakin's connection to Emerson is worth noting.
Also, what about the wine glass shattering. Rather unusual. And the ghost at the restaurant. And Devlin seeing that Amelia had dinner with Ethan Shaw after he warned her to keep her distance. Hmmm. Lots to think about, lots to keep me reading.

#10 – Ah! Interesting.
#11 – I agree with why you think she is now seeing the “messenger” ghost.
#12 – LMBO! Ah, a woman after my own heart. ☺
#13 – **snortsnort** Too funny!
#14 – Yes, they do match.
#17 – Hmmm…

#11 – Yes, totally agree with you; it is interesting that her father can see the “others.”
#12 – Yes, the Emerson alumni is suspect.
#13 – I like the way you think, Courtney!
#17 – Yes, and why did he tell her he was called the “Prophet”? Devlin seems to have a list going of people he doesn't want to associate with. LMBO! True.
#19 – Yeah, I was completely thinking, “like father, like son.” And I’m with you on questions about the wine shattering!

I read through chapter 10 before answering these so don't remember where it broke off exactly.
1. Eeep! At age nine, Amelia Gray stared seeing ghosts pretty early. Does this make it more ‘conceivable’ to you that she can see them? Icy fingers trailing through her hair? Brrrrrhhh. Do you think she’ll heed her father’s advice? Or that her life will remain “dull”? Do you think her biological mother had any special abilities?
I don't know if her bio mom has abilities but it doesn't sound like we will find out. She will definitely break the rules. The story would be boring otherwise.
2. Whether you’ve been to the American South or not, do you get a sense of place? How do you like this author’s “voice”? Do you like the graveyard settings? The “luxuriant landscape of lost dreams”? Or does it creep you out?
I don't know much about the South but the author seems to give us a good picture with the description of families and wealth and food. Graveyards have never been creepy to me. In fact the statue work in some graveyards is amazing and museum worthy.
3. Whoever are the ghosts following John Devlin, the police detective to the Charleston P.D.? Does he know they are there? Ghosts aside, what is the sense of foreboding that Amelia feels around Devlin? That she seems hyper-aware of his presence?
I want to know what draws certain ppl to be haunted. Were these ghosts ppl he knew? Cases he worked on? Was he essence just that tasty? Was he himself into bad stuff that drew the ghosts? I have more questions then theories at this point.
4. Why ever would anyone want pictures of the graveyard Amelia is restoring? Do you have any theories yet?
They may think the pictures have evidence that could convict them in the same way the cops think the pictures could be helpful.
5. So, Amelia’s word – or promise made – is sacred to her. Think this will come into play later?
Maybe. Or we will see her break promises for the first time and hence her life become super complicated and scary.
6. What were you thinking when (view spoiler)
Usually defenses against ghosts and such don't include the outside so this confused me. Unless it came on to hallowed ground which in that case maybe it found a small spot to stand. To me it doesn't seem like Amelia is very good at ignoring the ghosts. I didn't like that she moved the ring. It just proves that she saw the ghost. She should have ignored it.
7. Who is the stranger with café au lait complexion? What vibe is Amelia picking up about him? Why is he following her? (view spoiler)
I think this is the part I read while falling asleep because I don't really remember it.
8. Scene of the Crime: What is it about that particular gravestone? Is it that the inscription is facing away from the body? The epitaph? The morning glory vine, or feather?
I don't know yet. Maybe something else entirely.
9. What is your impression of Amelia’s double exposure photos? Is there a hidden message there?
Awesome art.

10. Is there any significance in Devlin being able to sleep in Amelia’s place? Do you like Amelia so far? Do you like the way she interacts with Devlin? What’s with Devlin’s silver medallion he wears? It knocks the wind out of her?
Devlin must somehow be connected to ghosts more than just being haunted since he is able to have peace at Amelia's place just like she has. I will be interested to see what his connection is because I don't think he knows fully he is being haunted. I do like Amelia and Devlin both.
I don't know if her father is right, but I would be creeped out by having the ring buried in my yard.
12. Do you think Afton Delacourt’s murder 15 years ago is connected to the current crime spree? Is the Order of the Coffin and the Claw definitely involved? Who could be a member of this secret society? Any suspicions? Or are you like me, and suspect everyone. LOL!
I definitely think it's connected to the current crime spree and the order. I suspect pretty much everyone now except Devlin, LOL, but especially Camille Ashby.
13. Book Quote: (view spoiler) Eep! What a visual! Or was it too cliché for you? Comments.
I thought it was creepy! I am glad I was reading during the day in a brightly lit room. :)
14. Another character is introduced: Charleston County coroner, Regina Sparks. Comments on her personality? I totally think there is something to the symbols on the gravestones. Are you with me on this?
I think the symbols are important too.
15. Devlin’s wife was a student of Dr. Rupert Shaw? Interesting. Comments?
Very interesting! I bet something went on between Dr. Shaw and Devlin's wife.
16. Book Quote:(view spoiler) Eep! What was this shadowy creature?
I don't know, besides it being one of the Others Amelia's dad talked about.
17. What do you think about Tom Gerrity? His “gift”? Why did Devlin’s wife back away from that strange – or rather, creepy – ménage à trios immediately when Tom Gerrity’s name was mentioned?
I am really curious to know if he also had a connection with Devlin's wife.
I don't trust Camille at all. I am not sure why it was a turning point. Maybe Amelia realized she was jealous and she realized her feelings were stronger than she thought.
19. What did you think of Ethan Shaw and Daniel Meakin? Did either of these two stand out to you? One more than the other?
I don't enough about them yet to have a strong opinion either way.

#10 – Yeah, I understand how she would be attracted to him, too. LOL! Hmm…still not getting why a talisman would knock the wind out of her. However, it is important in later chapters t..."
I am not reading the audio book, but I feel like I am getting a very good sense of everyone's character and the locations from the tone of the book and the overall feel.

10.
I do not know what to think about that. I like Amelia, she is intelligent but I don´t like the way she interacts with Devlin. She´s acting like a child. To be honest, I see her like a nine year old girl from the first chapter. If it weren´t for her job, I´d see everything differently. For example, I definitely wouldn´t believe her story about seeing ghosts in the first place. I´d say she is a lonely child with a need for imaginary friend. Yes, her father sees them too, but maybe he´s not grown up yet (like an adult man with a child´s mind) or he just accepts Amelia´s game. Of course, this theory can be crossed because of the rules she has to follow and there´s her work. We do have proves she´s not a kid. Still, I´m not completely convinced she´s not just overhelmed with all that job and that working in the cemetaries hadn´t had any touch on her psyche.
No idea about the medallion. At least not anything that would make sense.
11.
Not really. Maybe he wants to be different than other restorers? Graveyard bussines is quite ... claimed/requested? I´m sure there are some competitions between graveyard-keeping stuff?
It is interesting that she sees that ghost only when her father is brought in, is it not? I´ll go wild a bit and say that I´ve some thoughts about particular ghosts being some kind of familiars.
I could go even wilder than that, trust me, but I don´t think this book is that advanced or particullary unique so I´ll stop here.
And I don´t believe in anything her father says. He seems like a main suspicious so far. He has it all: wild mind, rules, secrets. I think he just wants Amelia to stay his little girl.
12.
Yes to the first two! Most likely everyone, except Amelia. I think even Devlin´s involved, or he was before. Well, they´re all suspicious, are they not? Author hasn´t really tried to show the new characters like a normal individuals.
13.
Ha! Sounds like someone´s done a little shopping in a halloween store?
But no, I actually think this was a good move. How does it go: when you open the door, you can´t close them again? I think that hand has something to do with introduction of new characters. I think there´ll be more of new people involved.
Anyway: characters and clues, new informations = a part of something from behind these mysterious doors is coming out. I think we´ll be seeing more of these parts soon. and more of new characters (and I swear, I didn´t read further than 12th chapter!)
14.
Aha! that´s what I wanted to say in my previous answer. Characters are very important here.
Regina could be just a victim, like she´s said. Even more and more books today present a bitchy character like an actually a nice one at the end. I´m not sure about her but I´ll believe her, for now.
Don´t want to think about symbols just yet.
15.
Funny. I don´t think she is the dead one anymore. Maybe she´s Ms. Ashby´s cousin? They both sound a bit problematic. Or are they the same person?
16.
Something connected to Devlin´s medallion?
17.
I want him to surprise me.
18.
I have a bit more faith in her than before. I don´t actually believe she´s lunatic. Maybe that´s the biggest mistake I´ve made so far.
Could it be they wanted her to hear their conversation? I´ll trust Devlin and Camille on this one and proclaim Amelia as unadequate for further investigation.
19.
All suspicious, even them. No one is innocent.
Oh and I was listening The New Zero by Rasputina (it was on repeat) the whole time and it goes really well with this book. I even see scenes from The Black Cat movie (with B. Lugosi and B. Karloff) because couple of years ago I saw a video (on YT) about this movie with the same song. I don´t know but that black and white "thing" is great for The Restorer. And the song is black and white in my ears.
This book does wonders for my brain. (þ

Thanks for posting! I like to hear authors talk about their books.

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 1 – 6
I think her mother had special abilities....she had to get it from somewhere. Amelia seeing ghosts so early definitely makes it conceivable that she'll see them later. I highly doubt that she'll heed her father's advice. It seemed like foreshadowing when we found out about them in the beginning.
2. Whether you’ve been to the American South or not, do you get a sense of place? How do you like this author’s “voice”? Do you like the graveyard settings? The “luxuriant landscape of lost dreams”? Or does it creep you out?
I haven't been to South Carolina (which I think is where the story takes place....can't remember exactly!)but through the writing definitely have been getting a sense of the place.
3. Whoever are the ghosts following John Devlin, the police detective to the Charleston P.D.? Does he know they are there? Ghosts aside, what is the sense of foreboding that Amelia feels around Devlin? That she seems hyper-aware of his presence?
Possibly his wife and child? I don't think he knows that they're there.
4. Why ever would anyone want pictures of the graveyard Amelia is restoring? Do you have any theories yet?
Have no idea yet!
5. So, Amelia’s word – or promise made – is sacred to her. Think this will come into play later?
Probably....
6. What were you thinking when (view spoiler)[Devlin’s ghost child “penetrated” her defenses and showed up at Amelia’s house? How is this possible? And what about the garnet ring? A warning or a message? (hide spoiler)]
I'm thinking a warning.....the child is trying to help her somehow.
7. Who is the stranger with café au lait complexion? What vibe is Amelia picking up about him? Why is he following her? (view spoiler)[Is he the one who broke into her car and took the photos? Or maybe he’s the killer? (hide spoiler)]
Not really sure, we didn't find out a lot about him.....will he appear again?
8. Scene of the Crime: What is it about that particular gravestone? Is it that the inscription is facing away from the body? The epitaph? The morning glory vine, or feather?
Have no idea....
9. What is your impression of Amelia’s double exposure photos? Is there a hidden message there?
I don't think there's a hidden message.

#2 – Families, wealth, food. That covers a lot of the South.
#3 – Oooh. Good question.
#5 – Yes, she could break her promises; that road goes both ways.
#6 – Yes, how was the little girl able to move through hallowed ground?

#10 – I’m with you on that, Kim. I don’t think he knows he is being haunted. It is so interesting to read other people thinks he does know.
#11 – Yes, it bothered me that she chose to put it there, too.
#13 – Yes, I had to read this book mostly in daytime. LOL!
#15 & #17 – Oh, I hadn’t even considered Dr. Shaw. When I read that scene for question #17, that was who I was betting she was involved with.

#10 – In that case, some imaginary friend!
#11 – I disagree; I think her father wants to protect her.
#13 – No need of a Halloween store; they are right there in the actual graveyard. Good call on thinking more characters will be introduced.
#15 – Whoa. It never occurred to me that she might not be dead.
#17 – Well, he might do that.
#18 – An elaborate set up? Could be.
#19 – Yes, everyone is a suspect.
Ah, classic. Love Boris Karloff.

#2 – Good sense of place; I thought so, too.
#3 – Ah! We agree.

10. Is there any significance in Devlin being able to sleep in Amelia’s place? Do you like Amelia so far? Do you like the way she interacts with Devlin? What’s with Devlin’s silver medallion he wears? It knocks the wind out of her?
I think he slept so peacefully because Amelia's house is so well protected from ghosts. Without the ghosts feeding on him he could be completely at peace and be himself. I'm not sure what to make of the medallion he wears but I noticed that Temple wears a gold medallion (was wearing it at dinner). Maybe it has something to do with the secret societies? Temple got her's at Emerson and Devlin got one from whatever school he went to?
My guess is that all of the ghosts they see are messengers of some sort, they just choose to ignore it. They probably see ghosts for some important reason which we'll find out later. Her dad was just a pansy and didn't want to be involved in the ghost world. Maybe something really bad happened to him or his parents to make him avoid helping ghosts any more?
12. Do you think Afton Delacourt’s murder 15 years ago is connected to the current crime spree? Is the Order of the Coffin and the Claw definitely involved? Who could be a member of this secret society? Any suspicions? Or are you like me, and suspect everyone. LOL!
I think they are connected and they definitely have something to do with the Claw. It sounds like someone is trying to meddle with the veil and is therefore causing some serious bad mojo to happen.
13. Book Quote: (view spoiler) Eep! What a visual! Or was it too cliché for you? Comments.
I had to look up what a crocus was. It's this: (view spoiler)
14. Another character is introduced: Charleston County coroner, Regina Sparks. Comments on her personality? I totally think there is something to the symbols on the gravestones. Are you with me on this?
If the murders do coincide with trying to get through the door to the after world then the symbols of the spirit flying on would make sense as the common link.
15. Devlin’s wife was a student of Dr. Rupert Shaw? Interesting. Comments?
I wonder if that's how she died and if that's the woman that is following Devlin. So many questions!
16. Book Quote:(view spoiler) Eep! What was this shadowy creature?
I think it's the Others that her dad was talking about. They've honed in on her and her ability to see them. I wonder what they do.
17. What do you think about Tom Gerrity? His “gift”? Why did Devlin’s wife back away from that strange – or rather, creepy – ménage à trios immediately when Tom Gerrity’s name was mentioned?
I think tom Gerrity is dead. I don't know why, I just get the feeling. Probably wrong though.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

#10 – Yes, missed Temple’s the first read through. Good catch.
#11 – Pansy? LOL!
#13 – Thanks for the pic!

10. Is there any significance in Devlin being able to sleep in Amelia’s place? Do you like Amelia so far? Do you like the way she interacts with Devlin? What’s with Devlin’s silver medallion he wears? It knocks the wind out of her?
I thought that it was mentioned that the house was built on hallowed ground - and people are protected from ghosts there. So that's why I figured he was able to sleep. It was peaceful....which makes me think that maybe he can see ghosts too and is being tormented by the two following him. I'm liking Amelia so far.
I thought it was interesting that her father told her she needed to return the ring...but to who/where?!! As for the angel restoration project....wow! What a lot of patience needed for that. I think it was a really thoughtful gesture by the community though.
12. Do you think Afton Delacourt’s murder 15 years ago is connected to the current crime spree? Is the Order of the Coffin and the Claw definitely involved? Who could be a member of this secret society? Any suspicions? Or are you like me, and suspect everyone. LOL!
It sure sounds like it! And yes I think the secret society is involved. I'm going with you though...suspect everyone!
13. Book Quote: (view spoiler)[ A skeletal hand rising out of the dead leaves like an early spring crocus.” (hide spoiler)] Eep! What a visual! Or was it too cliché for you? Comments.
No, it wasn't cliche but maybe a little too detailed. Yeah, you definitely get a good visual with that line!
14. Another character is introduced: Charleston County coroner, Regina Sparks. Comments on her personality? I totally think there is something to the symbols on the gravestones. Are you with me on this?
She seems very outgoing.
15. Devlin’s wife was a student of Dr. Rupert Shaw? Interesting. Comments?
I'm so curious to find out more about her. The couple seems very intense together from Temple's observation.
16. Book Quote:(view spoiler)[The air went very still and I sensed hesitation, like an animal sizing up its prey.
I'm thinking a ghost of some kind!
17. What do you think about Tom Gerrity? His “gift”? Why did Devlin’s wife back away from that strange – or rather, creepy – ménage à trios immediately when Tom Gerrity’s name was mentioned?
He's intriguing to me. I want to like him and think he has good intentions. Was he somehow connected to the wife's death when he was a cop?
I was so surprised to find out about Temple and Camille's fling way back when! That was kind of unexpected.
19. What did you think of Ethan Shaw and Daniel Meakin? Did either of these two stand out to you? One more than the other?
They both seem a little weird/quirky. But I guess in the fields that they are in, it's be expected. I'm thinking Shaw's father is possibly involved?

Lisa Kay’s Questions for Chapters 1 – 6
I am hoping there's an explanation for why she can see them, instead of just "because we can". I am also confused on this biological father but adopted mother thing...huh? I doubt the rules are going to stand very long.
2. Whether you’ve been to the American South or not, do you get a sense of place? How do you like this author’s “voice”? Do you like the graveyard settings? The “luxuriant landscape of lost dreams”? Or does it creep you out?
I don't mind the graveyard settings, I've always found graveyards to be very peaceful and lovely. So far I like the setting, but I have to admit that most of my visualization is because of other books I've read in the past because I'm not getting much detail about the surroundings from this so far.
3. Whoever are the ghosts following John Devlin, the police detective to the Charleston P.D.? Does he know they are there? Ghosts aside, what is the sense of foreboding that Amelia feels around Devlin? That she seems hyper-aware of his presence?
I really hope it's not a tpical "soul mate" thing, but something more unique. Honestly, my first thought about the ghosts was that they were his wife and child.
4. Why ever would anyone want pictures of the graveyard Amelia is restoring? Do you have any theories yet?
Maybe they have other bodies to be hiding soon and want to know the lay of the land.
5. So, Amelia’s word – or promise made – is sacred to her. Think this will come into play later?
I think it probably will, or it might have just been for characterization purposes.
6. What were you thinking when (view spoiler)[Devlin’s ghost child “penetrated” her defenses and showed up at Amelia’s house? How is this possible? And what about the garnet ring? A warning or a message? (hide spoiler)]
My first thought is that maybe the ground is quite as hallowed as she thought. She admits herself that she isn't sure why it's hallowed ground, so perhaps she was wrong?
7. Who is the stranger with café au lait complexion? What vibe is Amelia picking up about him? Why is he following her? (view spoiler)[Is he the one who broke into her car and took the photos? Or maybe he’s the killer? (hide spoiler)]
Honestly that part just baffled me. I have no idea why it was important at all. I didn't get the feeling we were supposed to think he followed her. She was in a public place, he came up to that public place and looked at the view...exactly the same thing she was doing, and then left without even looking at her. So, maybe her vibes are off because I saw this as a complete non-incident.
8. Scene of the Crime: What is it about that particular gravestone? Is it that the inscription is facing away from the body? The epitaph? The morning glory vine, or feather?
Honestly, I'm not sure. I want to think there's come symbolism for choosing that grave but I can't think of why there would be. So far, color me underwhelmed lol.
9. What is your impression of Amelia’s double exposure photos? Is there a hidden message there?
I think there most likely is, even is she isn't aware of it.

20. The sizzling attraction between Amelia and Devlin is so great that even Temple noticed. Do you think it is fueled by the ghosts? First the child, then the wife, they seemed to search for her only after her interactions with Devlin.
21. I didn't like Temple's reaction when Amelia mentioned Afton Delacourt’s murder. It is only the idea of a murderer around a small town? Or do you think she belongs or is connected somehow to the Order of the Coffin and the Claw?
22. The ring weared by Dr. Shaw and the incoherence of it's origin caught my attention. I'm wondering what the ornate symbol is or means. Do you agree with me that it may mean something, or is it just a little tidbit like Amelia dismissed it?
23. OK, the whole nightmare just freaked me out! But it also made think that maybe Amelia is right and the door opened with Afton Delacourt’s murder caused some dark entity to enter to this side of the veil. Could all of them (Camille, Ethan and Ruper Shaw, Temple, Tom Gerrity and Daniel Meakin) involved some how in the ritual? Or was the weird behaviors, the attack with the scissors and Meakin's attempt on suicide be influenced by this dark entity?
24.A mouse in a box in a basement with rows and rows of packed shelving...right... I'd be scrambling out there kicking and screaming, but I have a problem with closed spaces. So, we get to know Daniel Meakin. What did you think about him? Is his suspicious reaction to the reference Afton's murder just a way to tricks us, or there is something there?
25. Shani means "my heart" and she draw a heart on Amelia's window, but before that Amelia made a heart from the shells on top of the girl's ring. Didn't that mean that she was the one making the bond before? And what (view spoiler) could possible mean?
26. Amelia crossed the veil and back. What? How? When? She started to see ghost with 9 years old? How can she crossed the veil? Was it before the adoption? If so, how did she only start seeing the ghosts at 9? And how can her father saw them? Does that mean that he's the one that took her there? And what about the (view spoiler) part?
27.A car without lights and speeding in Amelia's direction...oh my... who do you think was? The killer? Camille? Her eavesdropping and leaving the basement without talking to Amelia was suspect. But all the reactions of the people she talked about the Order were too. I'm starting to think she stepped someone's toes and the need for secrecy will try to get her. Don't you agree?
28.Wait, a big paranormal expert is saying that the dark entity is a optical illusion? Isn't that suspicious? I didn't like Dr Shaw. What do you think of him?
29.Aha! There's the ring incoherence again. What is this guy hiding? Do you think it was wise of Amalia telling him that she saw the symbol on a grave? Isn't that the reason the killer is after her?

#11 – Good point about the who/where!
#12 - ☺ Smart woman.
#15 – Yes, intense is the word.
#18 – It was to me too. It would make me doubt whatever they would say about each other. Not because of their sexual preferences, but because of the emotions or hurts between them.

#2 – I always wonder when I get a great visualization when I read or listen to books is if it is because I’ve been there or watched movie in that setting.
#4 – That’s a good answer.
#8 – LOL! Okay, I will.
#9 – Me, too.

21. Everyone is rejecting to talk about it. That order is actually a cult (or so it seems) and they´re obviously summoning something and Afton was a price they paid.
22. Symbols again. I still don´t want to think about it. They always have some meaning.
23. Too many characters for me to follow.
I didn´t find anything creepy in this book yet.
24. I don´t know. I´ll let him be for now.
25. No idea.
26. Maybe she´s born at the other side of this mysterious doors?
27. Yes, I agree with you.
I think it was Daniel.
28. Well, he´s the main priest, of course he´s suspicious. I didn´t like him either.
29. Amelia´s too naive. I thought of her as intelligent but she doesn´t use her own brain at all. Great move that, showing him the stuff that Granny gave her!
So far Amelia is just letting everyone else solve the things. She is probably the one with the most clues and knowledge of all the characters involved, yet she just shares them with whoever talks with her. I don´t have a feeling she is real at all. Like she is the biggest ghost in the whole book. And seriously, if she´s some kind of angel or nephilim or demon, my rating is going to be very low.
I don´t want to be that bitter, it´s just that lately no book has anything new to show you and it just makes me sad.

20. The sizzling attraction between Amelia and Devlin is so great that even Temple noticed. Do you think it is fueled by the ghosts? First the child, then the wife, they seemed to search for her only after her interactions with Devlin.
I don’t think the attraction is fueled by the ghosts so much as the ghosts are a common bond between them. He is haunted by his ghosts, she is “haunted” by her ability. I also think there is a lot of just plain, old-fashioned physical attraction going on between them.
21. I didn't like Temple's reaction when Amelia mentioned Afton Delacourt’s murder. It is only the idea of a murderer around a small town? Or do you think she belongs or is connected somehow to the Order of the Coffin and the Claw?
Temple’s reaction made me immediately suspicious of her. She clearly did not want to talk about Afton’s death and wants Amelia to drop it. I found it odd when she was so willing to dish the dirt about everyone else. She had no problem discussing her past with Camille, but when it comes to Afton “it’s ancient history”? Mighty suspicious if you ask me. This of course, makes me assume she is in the Order of the Coffin and the Claw, but what if it’s just a red herring thrown out there by the author? Since I’m not familiar with this author’s writing style, I can’t yet be sure if some of the obvious clues are really obvious or if there are intentionally misleading.
22. The ring weared by Dr. Shaw and the incoherence of it's origin caught my attention. I'm wondering what the ornate symbol is or means. Do you agree with me that it may mean something, or is it just a little tidbit like Amelia dismissed it?
I think it means something, but at the same time it’s odd that he would lie about its origin with a different story each time. You would think that if the ring is really significant to him he would come up with one consistent lie. So is it significant to the story, or just a red herring meant to make us suspicious? Hmmm….
I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that they are all involved, except for Gerrity. We’ve only seen bits and pieces of him and I feel like the murderer(s) would be someone we’ve seen more of, or at least heard more about by this point in the book.
I’m starting to wonder if he is just another victim in all of this. He knows something, but I’m not sure he was a willing participant.
25. Shani means "my heart" and she draw a heart on Amelia's window, but before that Amelia made a heart from the shells on top of the girl's ring. Didn't that mean that she was the one making the bond before? And what (view spoiler) could possible mean?
Interesting that she made the heart of shells and then she finds out that the girls ‘basket name’ means heart. It’s all part of the symbolism. Granny’s also said that while Devlin doesn’t see the ghosts, he knows in his heart they are there. That soon he will have to chose between the living and the dead. I think his relationship with Amelia is going to force that choice. Does he finally let go of the dead and give his heart to the living woman in front of him. Or does he continue to let his heart be destroyed by the dead?
I’m wondering if this goes back to her mother. Maybe her mother died in childbirth. Maybe Amelia almost died with her. Maybe it’s when you’ve been touched by death that you even develop the gift to see ghosts.
This part made no sense to me at all. It’s suspicious that you have two flat tires in a matter of hours. But why did that car just sit there? Was it the same car from the night her briefcase was stolen? If they were after her, why not get her while she was stranded alone? And why, when they saw another car coming, speed up like they were going to hit her, but swerve away at the last minute. Unless it’s someone who is actually trying to look out for her and they wanted to scare her, or someone else in the area that we didn’t see.
28.Wait, a big paranormal expert is saying that the dark entity is a optical illusion? Isn't that suspicious? I didn't like Dr Shaw. What do you think of him?
Yes, I thought it was suspicious that he was so quick to come up with reasonable explanations for what she saw. But then I thought, that if you were someone who does believe in the supernatural, it’s going to be very important to weed out false claims from real ones. It’s likely part of his career to look for and rule out the obvious, natural explanations before wasting time investigating something that turns out to be a false claim of the supernatural. I think we’re supposed to be suspicious of Dr. Shaw, but I’m not really feeling it myself.
29.Aha! There's the ring incoherence again. What is this guy hiding? Do you think it was wise of Amalia telling him that she saw the symbol on a grave? Isn't that the reason the killer is after her?
Amelia knows Dr. Shaw and trusts him. She views him as an expert on the paranormal so it makes perfect sense to her to talk to him and get his input. But what is with that ring of his? As I said in question 22, if it was that important to him or the Order of the Coffin and Claw I think his lie would be more consistent. He would tell a random tale to each person who asks about it.

#20 – It never occurred to me that that would be the function of the medallion.
#26 – Interesting theory. You are getting something completely different out of this book than I am.

#20 – “just plain, old-fashioned physical attraction” Yeah, I’m going to agree with you on this one, Christine.
#21 – Great observation about Temple.
#22 – Yeah, what is with him changing his story each time? Seems like he would pick one and stick with it, even if it was a lie.
#23 – That’s the way! Suspect all of them! Like me. LOL!
#24 – Yes, I definitely picked up that he is more “victim” than “suspect.”
#26 – Whoa. Great theory.
#27 – Yes, I couldn’t figure out why the car was just sitting there, either. Totally baffled me.
#29 – I agree with you. She knows and trusts Dr. Shaw – though she should take a lesson from us and trust no one! I also thought she wanted to be a little defiant towards Devlin. **shrugs**

Busy day at work. I have no idea what time I'll be home tomorrow :(
And I'm so tired today that brain refuses to think :( :( :(

21) I think alot of people know about what happened to Afton and think if they don't talk about it to anyone they can pretend it didn't happen. I think it was more than just the fact she was murdered. Something else had to have happened.
22) The second story and then the third later makes me wonder. It could be a major point but could also be something the author threw in to make us suspicious of Dr. Shaw.
23) I think the behavior was influenced by The entity but I also think they are all aware of what happened even if they aren't directly involved.
24) I think he knows alot about what happened. Not sure to what extent he was involved. I don't really have a problem with closed spaces anymore but do have a problem with mice so... I might be knocking you over to get out.
25) I don't think Amelia made the first bond. I think the girl and wife have always been perfectly well aware that she could see them. I wonder if all the ghost have always known she could see them and just were polite enough to allow her to not acknowlege them untill she chose to but these two want something from her and so are not going to allow her to ignore them.
26) I'm wondering if her father isn't her bio father and just her mother adopted her after marrying her father. Possible explanation why her father has the ability. Or he knew her mother because of the ability and was asked by her to raise and protect her child. I wonder if she didn't cross the veil when her mother died.
27) Very suspicious but having 2 flat tires that close together has to be a deliberate act. Maybe they just sat there trying to get her to leave the car, or freak her out.
28) I didn't like him either. I don't believe an expert would say there were that few unexplained phenomona.
29) Amelia obviosly saw something on the grave, she just doesn't know what she saw or it's significance but that has to be why the killer is after her. He is very definately guilty of something just noy sure what.

Too bad to comment. I´m really disappointed, sorry.
