Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Jenne,

I read the first two and a short story in the Nicki Styx series. The rest of the series as well as the spin-off series is on my radar, but there's just not enough time. LOL.

Read: Dead Girls Are Easy (Nicki Styx, #1) by Terri Garey by Terri Garey
Finished: 1/29/13
Rating: ★★★★★
Review:
Wow what a great book! I read this based on the blurb alone and boy am I glad I did. Nikki has a near death experience and ever since she can see dead people. They're bombarding her with their unfinished business. Joe, the dr that brought her back from heart failure is interested in her and let me tell you he's pretty sexy smexy! Nikki gets tangled up in a voodoo case when one of her neighbors is murdered. This book was the perfect blend of mystery and romance. I will definitely be picking up #2 soon. If you're a fan of the Rhiannon's Law books you'd probably like this too.

Book: Hunting Ground
Space: 5, purple
Finished: 30/1/13
Stars: 3 & half
Review:
Don't shoot the messenger but this is not Patricia Briggs best work. I realise that this is in Mercy's world but compared to Mercy I'm not enjoying the characters as much.
This revolves around Charles, the marrock's son, an alpha in his own right and his mate, Anna, a rare omega wolf. Together they are trying to figure out their human relationship to go with the wolf one.
The story is set with the wolves preparing to come 'out' to the world. It sees them trying to solve murder & mystery whilst surrounded by fae, witches and vampires.

Space: #5, Purple
Title by Author: Guilty Pleasures by Laurell K. Hamilton
Series: Anita Blake #1
Read: 1/29/2013
Rating: ★★★★☆
Review:
I had forgotten how good the Anita Blake books were in the beginning. I still really enjoyed the story and Anita was such a better character here. JC was also much hotter in this book than the later ones.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I finished my read on Monday and finally got my review written today.

Purple
Steel's Edge (The Edge, #4) by Ilona Andrews Steel's Edge, Ilona Andrews, 1-28-13
Rating: 5 stars
Review: Ilona Andrews does a wonderful job creating characters that really come to life on the page. Charlotte's pain over her failed marriage is apparent, bringing her close to taking her healing abilities down a deadly path. She hope's that the limited magic in the The Edge will prevent that. Richard, Kaldar's brother, has strong reasons for fighting the slave trade. He realizes vengeance is an empty pursuit, but he's also willing to hunt down slavers in order to save his niece from pursuing her own revenge. After Charlotte heals Richard, events quickly force them back into The Weird, tracking down the head of the slavers.

Charlotte's struggle against the dark side of her magic continues, even as she uses her ability to help them hunt the bad guys. As they get closer and their relationship grows, Richard takes drastic measures to keep Charlotte from temptation. I wasn't really sure how Andrews would resolve this issue, but was completely satisfied with how the matter was addressed.

Brief appearances from Rose and Kaldar are nice, but it was really interesting to see how George, Jack and Sophia have changed over the last few years. There are also a few intriguing new characters, like Jason & Miko, I'm definitely hoping will appear again.

Overall a great book and I'm definitely going to continue reading this series.

Review:
This book was actually fairly entertaining and I basically finished it in a really quick time especially for myself. I usually takes me at least 4 days to finish a book even if I like it a lot.

Clara is an angel-blood (quarter angel). Her mother is half-angel and her father is full human. She has just received visions of her purpose in life and moves to Wyoming in order to follow through on it.

There are a lot of characters in this book that I really like and wish I had some friends like them. Clara is a sweet girl that seems like the kind of person that I wouldn't mind having as a friend to hang out with every once in a while. Tucker is absolutely amazing a one of those guys that any girl would love as a boyfriend especially as a teenager. I don't really like Angela as a friend since she is a little odd in my opinion. I don't know enough about Wendy but she seems really nice. Christian is the kind of guy that all the girls fawn over but isn't really that special.

I was a little disappointed in the ending of the book. I wanted to see more happen with the purpose than what actually happened. I will definitely continue on with the series if nothing else to see what will happen next with Clara and Tucker.

I just finished the first in that series not that long ago. I thought it wasn't too bad...I want to give more in the series a chance. I don't know why but I loved the narrator when she read Daughter of Smoke and Bone but wasn't as fond of her in Cast in Shadow. Maybe I need to actually read the book to like it more.

This one was pretty good. It's Kat and the twins' story. After a partial bond to the twins it's slowly killing Kat. They go to their home planet in hopes of healing her. The dark twin has major issues and it's causing all sorts of problems for the trio. Plus Kat is terrified of bonding completely to them. Like so much PNR they must lay their demons to rest if they want their HEA. There was a lot more action in this book and quite a few funny moments.

Review:
Percy is has just found out that he is a demigod (or half-blood). However he was born as of son of the one of the Big Three gods, Poseidon. He has been framed of taking Zeus's prized possession and now has to travel across the United States in order to retrieve it as his first quest as a half-blood.

I really enjoyed this book and I was bad and watched the movie first. The movie followed the book fairly closely as far as the plot and what happens. It was entertaining and fun.

The main characters were all entertaining in their own light. They all had their own way of thinking and very nonchalant with one another whether they liked each other or not. I am actually looking forward to reading the next book in the series to see what happens next in the books. It looks like it will be a wild ride.

Interesting dystopia set in Brazil. I would have liked to know more about why the society developed the way it did and what actually happened to the other areas of the world. I did enjoy the look at revolution and how far you should go to ensure change vs still being able to live your own life. Recommended for those looking for a different twist on the dystopia novel or those who are over zombies as our future conflict.

This series is aimed at YA but still set in the dark hunter universe. It delves into the beginnings of nick gautier's time with the dark hunters with a cast of the usual suspects whilst setting the scene for the making of the malachai.

Cast in Peril (Chronicles of Elantra, #8) by Michelle Sagara West Cast in Peril, Michelle Sagara, 2-6-13

“Not all of our heartless plans work as we intend; nor do all of our good intentions. We are where we are, and we can rarely predict where we will go, no matter how firm our beliefs.”

Rating: 5 stars
Review: I love this series. Michelle Sagara West's ability to create multi-faceted characters with complex motivations amazes me. The "good guys" are constantly making tough decisions, sometimes forced to focus on the bigger picture rather than any individual or on saving what/who they value most. The tension between the Barrani Consort and Kaylin is a perfect example of this. The Consort is still reluctant to forgive Kaylin's willingness to risk destruction of the entire world for a few refugees. [Cast in Chaos] The Consort's focus is on the safety of her people and she's justified in her anger. At the same time, Kaylin is a healer and a protector, she made the only decision she could live with. Forced to spend time together on the journey to the West March, Kaylin hopes they can eventually rebuild their previous relationship.

Kaylin & Severin's relationship is also strengthening, albeit slowly. She had a hard time moving past his previous actions and accepting exactly how much value he placed on her life was beyond her at first. Now that she's let go of her anger and desire for revenge, other issues still prevent her from pursuing any kind of intimate relationship. I wasn't really pro-Severin in the beginning, but I am interested to see where this leads.

Which brings me to Lord Nightshade. I admit I usually lean toward the "bad boy" in romance novels. You know, the one who comes to value the heroine and really care about her. I never thought this would come from me, but Lord Nightshade is never going to be the one for Kaylin. I've had a sneaking suspicion for the last couple books and now I finally get it. He will never value what she holds dear. (view spoiler)

I was happy to learn some of Teela's back story and am looking forward to even more in the next book. The continuing story arc featuring the Exchequer embezzlement is discussed a lot without revealing many more details. Since most of the book takes place during the trip and outside of the city, appearances from a few of my favorite characters are at a minimum. The Hallione are introduced and make an interesting addition to the story.

West's books aren't light reading. She paints wonderful worlds with her words, but there are a lot of details. I personally love the way she explores the power of names and true words, the basic differences between immortals and mortals in regards to those names and the part words played in creating the various races. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
