DHASG Movie Title Madness Challenge

Foreword: Movie titles can eerily echo the themes or storylines of some of our favorite reading. The purpose of this challenge is to read romance books that capture some of our favorite movies, either in title or in content.

Duration: February 1- August 31, 2013

Levels:


1. Movie Royalty—We bow to your movie expertise! Read at least 20 books on the list.

2. Movie Buff Extraordinaire—I’d love to see your home movie collection! They know your name at your local movie theater. Read 15-19 books from the list.

3. Couch Potato—You watch your fair share of movies and probably have a very respectable movie collection. You get some props from us! Read at least 7-14 books from the list.

Categories:

1. The Bodyguard—Read a book where the hero is guarding the heroine or vice versa, and they fall in love.

2. Urban Cowboy—Read a modern western romance.

3. Dance With Me—Read a book where the couple is involved with a dancing contest or where dancing plays a significant role in the book.

4. The Blue Lagoon—Read a book where the couple is stranded/marooned on an island and fall in love.

5. Simply Irresistible—Read a book where one of the main couple is a baker or confectioner.

6. Moonstruck—Read a book with Italian-American protagonists, or a book where the heroine is older than the hero, or the hero or heroine is a late bloomer due to family obligations.

7. Jane Eyre-Read a book where the heroine is a governess who falls in love with her employer. You may read the original book if you choose to, but you are not required to do so.

8. The Spy Who Loved Me—Read a book where one of the main couple is a spy and they fall in love.

9. Nine Months—Read a book where the heroine gets pregnant by the hero and this is a major part of the romance.

10. Pretty in Pink—Read a book where the heroine is a wallflower/outsider who falls in love with the popular guy.

11. Earth Girls are Easy—Read a book where the human heroine falls in love with an alien hero.

12. The Long Kiss Goodnight—Read a book where the heroine is the spy, and she has either carried on her work under a false identity or she has amnesia.

13. While You Were Sleeping—Read a romance where one of the characters is an amnesiac or the romance is initially a pretend/fake romance.

14. Somewhere in Time—read a time travel romance.

15. Romeo and Juliet—Read a book about star-crossed romance, but with a happy ending.

16. Pretty Woman—Read a book where either of the main leads used to be a prostitute or they met during their work as a prostitute. You could also read a book where one of the couple is being ‘kept’ by the other.

17. My Fair Lady—Read a book where one of the leads is ‘made over’ or revamped by the other.

18. Laws of Attraction—Read a book where the main couple are initially adversaries in business or their careers.

19. Practical Magic—Read a book where the heroine is a witch, or the hero is a wizard/warlock, etc. You may read the original book, but you are not required to do so.

20. Pride and Prejudice—Read a book where the hero and heroine do not like each other initially, or think the other is not good enough for them, but fall in love. You may read the original book, but you are not required to do so.

21. Lord of the Rings—Read a romance book with a high fantasy setting. You may read one of the books in the original series, but you are not required to do so.

22. Nine and ½ Weeks—Read a romance book that is highly sensual or a book about a short-term affair that turns to love.

23. The Breakfast Club—Read a book where a group of people thrown together leads to romance for at least one or more of the couples.

24. Office Space—Read a book where the couple works together in the same office/work environment and falls in love.

25. The African Queen—Read a book set in an exotic location and full of dangers, where the couple meets and falls in love. You may read the original book, but you are not required to.

26. Revenge of the Nerds—Read a book where one of the main couple is a nerdy/geeky person who falls in love with a non-nerdy person. Or they can both be nerds.

27. Bull Durham—Read a sports romance. You can use a sport of any kind for this title.

28. Braveheart—Read a medieval or Scottish historical romance.

29. The Phantom of the Opera—Read a book where the hero/heroine is masked or disfigured and has a dark reputation. You may read the original book, but you are not required to.

30. That Last of the Mohicans—Read a historical romance filled with adventure and conflict with a colonial/frontier American setting. You may read the original book, but you are not required to.

Bonus Opportunities:

Upper Level Bonus: Choose three additional movies and read books that capture the essence of their titles or the content of the movies. You can substitute out one of the above, but you must do the other two in addition to the above. In other words, you will need to read at least 20 books from the list and two more of your own choice. (This will add 3 movies to your final score)

Middle Level Bonus: Choose two additional movies and read books that capture the essence of their titles or the content of the movies. You can substitute out one of the above, but you must do the other one in addition to the above movies. In other words, you will need to read at least 15 books from the list and one more of your choice. (This will add 2 movies to your final score)

Lower Level Bonus: Choose one additional movie and read a book that captures the essence of its title or the content of the movie. It must be in addition to the above movies. This means you will need to read at least 7 books from the list and one more of your choice. (This will add 1 movie to your final score)

Instructions:

1. Books must be read between February 1st and August 31st for this challenge.
2. Participants should sign up on this thread and post their stats regularly. When you are finish, post your final stats and that you are done. If someone completes the challenge and they want to go for another round, just let the moderator/coordinator know.
3. One book per movie title. You must use the titles above, unless you opt for any of the bonus levels, which allows you to substitute or add titles to the official list for your challenge.
4. You do not have to watch the movie or have watched the movies to participate.
5. If you are having trouble finding books, you can ask other participants for recommendations on the thread.
6. Categories and books may be changed at any time before 11:59pm on August 31st.

Since I just read this (drat it would have been great for this challenge!) Beast would be great for 29 Phantom. They are also friends to lovers (is that one? I can't remember) and it was really good.

Some are borrowed from the suggestions list, so I thought I'd post here to let you know (and maybe help others out), since I don't think you'll know if someone updates a comment. I'm kind of sad that I just finished reading Pride and Prejudice! Oh well
