What are U doing today? (Ongoing thread)
I actually read this article yesterday rather than today; but I thought some group members might be interested. It's an edited version of an address Neil Gaiman gave in 2013 at a Reading Agency (this is a British organization that promotes literacy) event. One of my library co-workers sent the link to the rest of us librarians, after receiving it from a faculty member: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013... .
This is awesome - a music video made in zero gee. I'll post an interview on how they made it below in the comments. This was made on a Russian version of NASA's Vomit Comet. 50 seconds of weightlessness at a time, yet it looks seamless. Incredible!http://www.nbcnews.com/tech/innovatio...
How it was done:

It's in the mid 20's & feels warm - low humidity, sun, & none of that damn, biting wind. I was out in just my shop coat ($5 GoodWill tweed sports coat) & comfortable trimming the goats feet & other chores. The cat & goats kept scaring each other. They'd go for the hay, he'd jump to a different bale, they'd jump back... Funny to watch. Pip didn't bother the cat at all, just played with Speedy & the goats. Of course, he was on his best behavior since I had the shock collar on him. :)

Oh to be in England where they appreciate the written and spoken word. Once I was in a bus terminal in Scotland there on the bulletin board was a notice for a Poetry reading that evening. Never would that happen here, I bet. Also, a British cab driver was quoting Shakespeare to me as we rode along. I loved every word that author said and I do empathize with the characters quite often. That is part of the fun..You all agree so why go on and on with my praise..

I had a crew at work putting in a few new networking & phone cables that I was overseeing while setting up some new PCs & fixing old ones. It was a rat race which is why I like to go home & deal with 'real' things like the animals.
When my husband was deep into computing at Honeywell and we then had several acres at Lake of the Ozarks people would ask if he fished and he answered NO and did he hunt and he answered NO and when they asked what he did there he said he built stone walls. It was such a difference than his day job it was relaxing. We also sailed and that too took him away. So know what you mean about your stressful job.
Thanks for posting, Werner, Jim, and Nina. I'm getting behind in my online business this week. So much going on.
Joy, Ok to be busy. Glad you aren't ill. Very cold here in the morning. So far this is the second year in our weather records that has the least snowfall, At the airport has five inches so far. Here in the suburbs we've had one inch. The record lowest is three inches and I forgot which year that was. Warmer air is supposed to be here by mid week.

To discourage them from traveling, I sent them an e-mail entitled: "WIND-CHILLS BELOW ZERO THIS WEEKEND! FROSTBITE!" But they're coming anyway.
I finished up the grandmonster's toolbox today. I posted some pics in this woodworking album on FB.https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...
I also finished up the baby blanket I've been working on for months. I'll never do another of those. Boring!!!
We've been in the teens the past few days & are now getting snowed in. We were supposed to get 1"-3", but we're up to 4" or 5" already & the snow is supposed to continue until dawn. They've already called schools out. I won't be going to work, either. I doubt I'd get out of the lane, so I'll need to spend the morning plowing.

Nice work, Jim!

It looks like the snow quit right after we went to bed - just the 5". The temp is up, too. It was 30 when I woke up & now it's 31! We might hit 40 today!!! So nice to be out of the single digits & teens. I'll have to get out there & plow first thing when it gets light out. That will give it time to melt off all day.
Jim, glad it was only 5 inches. As for the temps, phooey on single digits! We're freezing at night here... have to run the "trickle" to stop the pipes from freezing. Current temp here is "up" to 15 degrees! Whoopee! LOL
Actually, i envy your snow cover. My husband is out today watering our tree that was planted in the fall and also our bushes/azleas etc. We have had once inch of snow this winter and it is supposed to be 66 this afternoon and 68 on Thursday. Where is winter? It keeps passing us by although I can't say we havn't had very cold nights this past week. I love the little frog item. Jim. And Joy wasn't it fun to see old Carson get his cumupance? I worry about Barrow. Now that I like him. My favorite is Tom. I wonder if Maggie Smith is off the program now?
I just saw this on TV:"Harper Lee Harper Lee dead at age of 89: 'To Kill a Mockingbird' author passes away"

Thanks for the info. A bit sobering as I will reach the age of 89 in April. She was a legend however, unlike me. Although I suppose I can count all my many descendents as my legend; six children, 18 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren counting as one more is due in May.
Nina wrote: "Joy, you are a wonder at getting these web sites. Thank you."Nina, there's nothing to it but "copying & pasting" the links. lol

You have such a fine mind and you're such an interesting person (even without all those descendants! ) lol
As for your age, don't despair. My aunt lived until 104 and my other aunt just turned 100 last September! I doubt if I'll last that long. I don't exercise enough... just sit here in my recliner! lol But then again, THEY didn't exercise either, as far as I know. So much depends on the genes, I think.
Thanks for those encouraging words. Every little bit helps and I count each day as a blessing. I count my goodread friends as a blessing. So glad a grandson hooked me up to you.

My grandson, Tim was already on Goodreads when he got me into it but I will ask him how he happened to hear about it himself. He rarely comments on our group but does put in some critique of books on occasion. And tonight I have new hope as I see that Harper Lee is actually a year older than me. She would have been ninety on the 28th or April and I'll JUST be 89 on the 29th. Don't you think her book came out at just an opportune time in our country's history? And I have read that Scout and Gregory Peck remained close until the end of his life. She was quoted as saying he was her second father.
Joy H. wrote: "Nina, you can thank your grandson for me that you joined our Goodreads group. :)"Nina, I second that!
Today is National Cherry Pie day and guess what I have in the fridge? Yes I do have one but this morning I made a pineapple upside down cake for my son in law's birthday so i'll eat the pie later. I still think of George Washington's birthday as the 22nd. My dad's birthday was the 21st and he actually indentified with George by wanting cherry pie on his birthday.
Nina, my dad's birthday was Feb. 22! Another coincidence for us!BTW, today is Ed's and my 56 Anniversary! We were married in 1960. (I hope my math is right!) :)
Could you please send us a piece of your pineapple upside down cake?
You amaze me with your love of baking. I wouldn't bake a cake today if you paid me! LOL AIN'T THAT A SHAME? :)
WELL --- IF YOU PAID ME ENOUGH... :)
Thank you, Jim! I sent him an email greeting containing the following irreverent e-cards:

LOL !
I just saw Dick VanDyke on MSNBC-TV( plugging Bernie Sanders).VanDyke is 90 YEARS OLD and still looks and sounds as YOUNG as he did on the Dick VanDyke show many years ago! I'm amazed! What a guy!
I guess 90 years old doesn't mean being "old and decrepit" after all! :)
Great cards, Joy. Similar to what Marg & I give each other. I've been meaning to listen to Dick VanDyke's bio. He is a remarkable guy.It was a gorgeous day, almost hit 70. I went out to ride & had to clean Chip off, so I put our new cat, Raven, on his back just for fun. Neither was all that thrilled, but they put up with it for a bit. I posted a picture of it here in our group pictures.

Eddie made me shrimp cocktail tonight with his own inimitable horse-radish laced cocktail sauce! Whew!
But I have to make my own TV dinner. :)
Jim wrote: "I went out to ride & had to clean Chip off, so I put our new cat, Raven, on his back just for fun. Neither was all that thrilled, but they put up with it for a bit."That's a sweet picture, Jim. Chip doesn't look too pleased. :) The cat looks a bit puzzled. :)
As for Dick VanDyke's bio, my library history shows I borrowed the audio version in Oct. 2013. Too bad I didn't write a review for my Goodreads records. I'm sure I enjoyed the bio but I can't remember much about it. I'll have to read the other GR reviews to refresh my memory. - My Lucky Life in and Out of Show Business by Dick Van Dyke
Joy, my wish for you and your husband is to be together as long as my husband and myself/we celebrated our sixty eighth wedding anniversary in November. Nothng will ever take his place beside me and I will say a prayer for you tonight for a longer time for you both to be with one another. God Bless you each of you on the special day.PS You were married in 1960 and in July of that year I had my sixth child. I was thirty three.
Werner, your review of the Nora Loffts book made me run right out and get it but I will just call the library and drive there when it comes in, instead.
Joy, I think tonight is the last of the episodes of Downton Abby. Out TV station says it will have a marathon of Season 6 next Sunday. Off to watch it now..
