Werner Nina, I think your book will be one that your family and friends will always treasure!

Actually, Tony is my son-in-law, not my grandson (Luke is one of my grandsons, though). But he enjoyed Halloween as much as the kids did! :-)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) It got windy & chilly today. Chip was plodding along & suddenly spooked. My reins broke. I came off him & broke my crop when I landed. It wasn't a hard fall, but I had to walk all the way from the south fence up to the barn to get him. I was not a happy camper. I tied the reins together, but they were pretty short. Good enough & he got to go south back to the scene of the crime at a much faster pace than he was happy with & the next time he started to spook, I growled at him. He decided I was the scarier one, so continued bravely on. Hah!

Then Lily caused more excitement by bounding in front of us to get a little snake. I'm not sure it was a foot long. I guess it got caught out with our weird weather. The day started at 35, felt like it hit 70 at lunch - a gorgeous clear day - & then it was a chilly 55 when I got home, gray with a really wicked, cutting wind that made it feel 10 degrees colder. Chip was a little startled, but moved past the action with only a few dance steps & carried on like a trooper.

To add insult to injury, after circling the north field, we came back in to find Marg fighting with the goats who didn't want to go in. She got out her lunge whip & cracked it near them to send them on their way. Chip tried to sit down to escape the armed crazy lady. It was easy to hang on, but sheesh! It's almost like the world was out to get me today...
;)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, I shouldn't smile at your adventureous day but by the time I got to Marge and the goats I couldn't help it. Thanks for giving something to make my day not seem too bad. Some of our birds returned/one hid on this terribly windy/sixty miles an hour/in a viburnum bush outside my bedroom window and he hasn't ventured forth yet and now it's dark. We so wanted the predicted thundestorms/nary a drop.
So that is the way of the wind in KS today.

Werner Thanks, Joy! Nina, I can totally relate.

Nina | 6069 comments What did I do today? I went to the pain clinic dr and had an injection in the spinal cord and after resting for half hour and having blood pressure taken intermittenly three times i was free to go although felt a bit shakey and was told to come back again to go through it all over again next week. I didn't see the therapy dog this morning, Ge us so sweet to come lay his head in my lap. Company here so must close.

message 5659: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Sorry you're still in so much pain, Nina. No fun.

I'm on holiday. I took off Friday to see the kids & now have the first week off I've taken all year. Probably the only one I'll get. I tend more to long weekends. It's nice to have a whole week off, though. A bit of a stomach bug & cold temps convinced me to spend the day reading, catching up on TV shows & knitting. Actually, I've decided to abandon the baby blanket I was knitting for crocheting a hoody-scarf from some alpaca I spun up. It was nice to laze about. It was sunny out, but started out in the very low 20's & barely peaked above freezing the past couple of days.

Mercurialgem | 27 comments Question........has anyone ever experienced heat in their body when getting angry? I usually don't get angry and can ignore things but last week a person at work made me so angry (and I don't tend to be a person to speak up just brush it off) and I felt my neck turn hot and my face (thankfully I had walked away from person so she didn't see it)......but then something weird happen and I felt like I was in a room where they had turned up the heat even MORE...at that point I got scared and really focused on calming down. Anyone have similar exp.?

message 5661: by Mercurialgem (new)

Mercurialgem | 27 comments Oh also, I could hear myself really breathing hard........like in the cartoons when they are huffing and puffing. =)

message 5662: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, I really hope these treatments soon do what they're supposed to do!

No, Mercurialgem, I've never experienced any symptoms exactly like that. Like you, I usually don't get angry, though there have been a couple of occasions in my adult life (decades ago) when I was angry enough to have a physical reaction; but mine took the form of trembling and tightened throat. I'd guess that your reaction was caused by greatly heightened heart rate, which would make your blood circulate faster and cause a sensation of heat in your body.

I'll be working the day shift today, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. After that, the library will be closed until Monday; so I'm looking forward to the holiday, and the time off!

Oh yeah. I've seen red before too, mostly when I was younger & getting into a fight, something highly dangerous, or both. I remember when jumping one time a guy got blown under the plane & my feet wound up in his shroud lines. I was stretched between his chute & mine, both of us out of control. I managed to cut one line & twist free of the rest before landing. He was quite upset with me cutting one of his lines (He had a couple of dozen.) & I was seeing red over his squirming which almost left me stretched out in a landing. We had quite a dust up. I don't suppose it solved anything, but it did burn off the excess adrenaline.
;)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Not a great day yesterday. A new computer was being a drag after lunch (Microsoft Security Essentials crashing on a brand new Microsoft Win7 computer!) when Marg called to tell me we had an injured deer in the pond. Apparently it got hit on the road, but made it into our field. The dogs went after it when Marg started riding out that way & it 'escaped' into the pond. Marg called the dogs off & then called around, but had to settle for me, so I left work 45 minutes early to take care of it.

Ugh. It was a young one, this year's, & its hind end was torn up so it couldn't get out of the pond, but it was freezing. A neighbor helped me chase it to one side of the pond where I shot it & we could get it out without having to wade in. I dragged it out into the woods, so I guess the coyotes had a good meal last night. Not fun. They're thick as fleas around here, but they're such a pretty critter.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments How sad, Jim.

message 5674: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Sometimes nature deals us a blow. LIke when our daughter's Janck Russell got into a fight when the two dogs next door and was torn to bits. I am not sure my daughter ever got over it althoug she does love the "new" dogs and as the old saying goes, "life goes on" and it does.

message 5675: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, I was talking to a friend of mine after church this morning and he told me out on his acreage he has three horses and sometimes the deer come up to eat hay and drink their water alongside them and they get along famously.

message 5676: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) The dogs don't allow deer or any critters in our fields. Indy is terrified of fawns. We had one that scared him early on, kept popping up when he first got to our place. You know how still they'll lay until you're right on them & then they suddenly explode. I guess that happened once too often & it blew his little mind. He'll watch them closely over the fence, though. There are a few pictures of him doing that in this album from June of this year:
https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...

We had a fawn that kept sleeping by the jump into the north field last year. It's back behind the barn, right on the west fence line past which deer often graze. I saw Indy dancing about, tense with his ears pricked & walked out there to find the fawn trying to get out of our field through the fence. It had gotten a bit bigger & couldn't fit through the new wire, so I walked out there to open the gate.

Indy followed me snorting, dancing, & blowing the whole way. The fawn went over the jump into the north field & slipped through the old stock wire fence easily enough. Indy then trotted past me & patrolled the fence to make sure the dangerous intruder was gone. Needless to say, I got a chuckle out of it, especially when he came back so proud & begged for a treat.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Bad news yesterday: Speedy has done something to his near hind ankle. Almost seems to be popping in & out of joint. He can put a bit of weight on it &, being a pony, is able to get around, but he's lame as can be. We're going to give him a couple of days, but this might be the end. He's well into his thirties & is getting low on teeth, so this might be the time.

Erin is demanding that she be allowed to make the call & have it happen when she can be here, but I don't think that's possible. I'm afraid I'm going to have to put my foot down on this one. Again. I hate being the Grim Reaper, but I won't have him stumbling around in pain for days or weeks to suit her schedule. Right now, he's still bright-eyed & doesn't seem to be in any pain, although he gets twinges occasionally.

On the brighter side, my boss said, "...coming up with unique excuses to skip work is not one of your job requirements..." This is in response to my email on Friday that I had to leave early for the deer (He was out of the office.) & another this weekend to let him know about Speedy since I'll have to run home if he gets worse & goes down. I also took 1/2 a vacation day to get in hay last month. He says most people just go to the beach or call in sick occasionally.
;)

At least he has a sense of humor about it. He's got a tender heart as far as animals are concerned. His dog, Lola, could probably beat out Lily for the 'Most Spoiled Dog' award.

message 5680: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Good news! Speedy is walking on his ankle!!! It's blown up, but I actually saw him standing on it resting the other hind leg today. Riding him from now on is out, but at least he seems to be doing better.

Nina | 6069 comments A knitted hoodie sounds wonderful for the coming winter. I am impressed at your spinning skill.

message 5686: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks! Actually, I crochet the hoodie scarfs, but knit hats & scarfs. I'm crocheting some scarfs now, though. They're the hoodie scarf without the hoodie. Just triple crochet stitches strung together & stacked, simple & fast, but they're made of 3 ply brown Alpaca yarn that I spun up. I needed a break from that stupid baby blanket. It takes me 15 minutes to knit a row which adds about 1/8" to the length. Ugh!

message 5688: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Thanks, but not really. I only do the simplest sort of both. I put it down too often & am generally watching TV or something, so can't keep track of stitches very well.

message 5689: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments At least you do it!

message 5690: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Jim,Hope you are feeling better now. Not fun to be sick on vacation. Rest up and finish that hoodie when you are able to do so. What color is it?

message 5691: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I feel fine, Nina. Thanks. The scarf is brown - regular brown, maybe a little darker than average with some white hairs in it. Nice stuff.

message 5692: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Am I right? Is this for a grandson?

message 5693: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) No, the scarf is up for grabs right now. I have a dentist appointment next week, so one of the girls there might grab it. They try to schedule me just before Xmas since they generally get the choice of a bowl, candle sticks, or something knitted. I made the grandmonster a hat & scarf last year.

message 5694: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Lucky girls.

message 5695: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) My dentist is really nice. We read a lot of the same books & he has a small staff of 3 nice gals. The office is pretty old looking, but he's good & his prices are reasonable. They've introduced me to a couple of new friends since everyone chats. Linda told them she had Alpaca for sale & they introduced us. I'm a better friend of her husband, Ken, who does a lot of woodworking besides sheep farming. Stuff like that. Great, small town atmosphere.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I saw several bluebirds down by the pond during my ride on Chip this morning. I am sore, but more in the shoulders & neck, although my leg is very tender to the touch.

message 5698: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Will the bluebirds stay for the winter, Jim?

message 5699: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Supposedly they will, Joy. I don't recall seeing many this time of year, though. We're not getting as warm as they said, but it's still nice. It's supposed to the warmer of the weekend days, but it's overcast. Still, I got the leaves & all chopped up with the riding mower. Refilled the bird bath & did a few other chores.

Mary JL (maryjl) | 527 comments Just started a new book a few days ago --The Cases That Haunt Us: From Jack the Ripper to JonBenet Ramsey, the FBI's Legendary Mindhunter Unravels the Mysteries That Won't Go Away.

Not supernatural fiction, despite the title. The authors--one of whom is a retired FBI profiler--selects criminal cases that continue to arouse interest. Jack the Ripper; Lizzie Borden; the Zodiac Killer and others. Of course these are only theories---but based on the expericne and knowledge of an FBI profiler. Interesting.
