That is wild. I've seen hawks on our front porch railing & on the back fence & gate. Not sure if they're Red Tails or Gosshawks, though. I was surprised they would do so here much less in a condo! Birds are weird, though. We occasionally get Downy woodpeckers drinking out of our hummingbird feeders. Some species have moved in with man pretty well.

Nina | 6069 comments Jim, That is why you would make a good reviewer and that is why I wrote about it because I thought it sounded like your version. I am glad I read it.

Nina | 6069 comments We had an interesting day/we went to an OPEN HOUSE of the home we had lived in but moved from forty four years ago. Our daughter who was married when we lived there went with us. She left for Germany the following day after being married and had not been back to that house until today. My husband said if it wasn't a split level he's move back. The family we sold it to has lived there all this time and the lady, a widow, just died two months ago. We were the
original owner. Trip down memory lane. Even the shelf my husband put up in the basement for the kids to put their mittens and winter hats on is still there.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) That's wild, Nina. Had it changed much?

The most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen was when we were down at Myrtle Beach, SC. It was early in the morning and I had walked down to the beach. As I stood on the sand, the sun rose on the edge of the horizon and it was ENORMOUS, a big orange ball, HUGE! I never thought it was possible for the sun to look so huge.

I didn't have my camera. So the next day, I went down to the beach at the same time but the conditions weren't the same. The sun was a smaller orange ball. I was so disappointed (even though it was still lovely). I guess some sort of magnification takes place under certain conditions. I'll never forget the awesome beauty of it.

The Little Paris Bookshop by Nina George.
Sounds interesting, Nina.

Nina, it's always cool when you and an adult daughter or son can share an appreciation of a book! I've had that experience with my daughters at times as well.

message 5459: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I am so appreciative of the writing of the book,"The LIttle Bookshop in Paris." Some of the lines are so entertaining. The inside of our "old" house hadn't changed that much with the exception of the kitchen having sliding glass doors leading to a huge deck. We didn't have that. The outside looked mostly the same but it now has vinyl siding and not as nice, to my way of thinking as wood shingles. So a bit of the charm was missing; but mostly inside I could still picture my six children living there. I was only thirty two years old when we moved there.

message 5460: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, many years ago when I got my good camera a friend of mine said, "The best pictures are the one's you won't take," I think that could apply to your Myrtle Beach sunrise. I know exactly how you felt. It is easier to capture the memory than the actual photo of it. Sounds awesome, in any case.

Nina | 6069 comments Jim. One more bird question or anyone else who has the answer. This morning a red bird I thought at first was a cardinal, came to the feeder. However, this bird had a black head and no red crest on top. Our usual lady cardinal doesn't look like that. Any ideas?

message 5462: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "Joy, many years ago when I got my good camera a friend of mine said, "The best pictures are the one's you won't take," ..."

Very true! Even though I carry a camera with me constantly, I'm always missing shots. My good camera does OK with sunsets & sunrises, but they're never as pretty as when viewed live.

As for the bird, I don't know of any birds with red bodies & black heads, so it's probably a Cardinal with an issue like a weird molt or bad mites. Their skin is black. Here's an blog about it. It's not all that uncommon. I've seen it a couple of times.

message 5463: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks Jim, that solved my mystery bird question. I thought it must be some type of cardinal as it didn't look at all like any of the birds in the book. I have been seeing cardinals for years however and never seen one looking like those. Never too old to learn something new..Yes.

Yes, that's true, Nina. In my mind I still see that huge orange ball of sun which I saw in 2001.

Nina | 6069 comments Once I was in Copenhagen riding in a boat and we were about to go beneath a bridge and on the bridge was a railing with holes just big enough for the children on the bridge to poke their heads through which they were doing. It would have made a great picture. I had just used the last of my film before that thinking nothing else of interest would be coming up..Wrong!

Werner Barring anything unforeseen, Barb and I plan to leave early tomorrow morning to spend a few days in the Fulks Run area (as usual, I'll be largely offline). So among other things we're doing today, we're engaged in last minute preparations for the trip.

Nina | 6069 comments What I am doing today is going through the final draft of my eighty eighty years of memories with my husband's editing. He is very good at this. I am hoping to have this published with pictures and some published essays of mine to give to my "children." I wish I had had one of these from my grandparents or a parent. Maybe the recipients will take the time to journey back with me to a land of wars and no air conditioning, milk deliveries and listening to the radio. Of course no TV and unfortunatly no Polio vaccine or anti-biotics and the drs made house calls. Not always "good old days" but often they were.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Neat, Nina. Publish it as an ebook! That would be great.

Nina | 6069 comments I am unfamiliar with ebooks so is there a site I can go look at with info? If you know of one please let me know. Thanks

message 5478: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments I was able to access some info on the ebook and so I'll study the options and see what appeals to me.

message 5479: by Jim (new)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Smashwords & Amazon are 2 of the biggest, Nina. You might just want to use Smashwords.com since they have an excellent document on how to format your manuscript & will let you put it in a lot of different formats automatically. Also, you can always set your own price. Amazon only does Kindle format & often has a lot to say in the price, I believe.

message 5480: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Thanks for your suggestion, Jim. I will definitely look into Smashwords. We are now in the final editing phase of the writing and then have to scan in pictures. I believe my grandparents would have thougth of having me committed to an institurion if I had said someday someone will walk on the moon. Times change isn't a cliche.

message 5481: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Good luck with that book, Nina!

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Nina wrote: "...Times change isn't a cliche. "

You're telling me? Grant you, I'm not as old as you are, but I started out life on a farm that supported the family & now work to support my farm in a job that hadn't been thought of back when they were asking me what I wanted to be when I grew up! Yeah, just a wee bit of change.
;)

I see posts on Facebook about if you were born during a specific decade, just how much the world has changed. They're not particularly comprehensive, but if I see a few of them on the same day, it makes my head hurt. The amount of changes, what is/isn't available any more, attitudes, & such are just amazing. Usually they're for the 80's or 90's, not that long ago, too.

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments It's so hard to keep up with everything!

message 5484: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Recently there was an editorial in our paper written by a young woman who gave up city loft life to go live on a farm. She was writing to say she is so happy to not have air conditoning. I understand part of what she was trying to say as I think neighborhoods have changed when people come into their driveways and push the control and they are in their garage and no one sits outside in the summer/like on a front porch. But, there were times back in the fifties here when the temps were over one hundred degrees for two weeks and I had to use a hot pad to get my dishes out of the cabinets and I had four small children and no air conditioning and I have to say I was miserable.

message 5485: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments Air conditioning has its pros and cons. I do appreciate it in the car!

message 5486: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Joy, we were once driving in AZ to visit our friends when the air conditioning in our car went out/the temp outside was 120 degrees. I was afraid we might die of the heat. Obviously, we didn't.

message 5487: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments That must have been brutal!

message 5488: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments When we reached our friend's home in Lake Havasu, AZ we pulled our car into their garage and they told us to lower our windows otherwise the heat would crack the windshield. I guess you could survive the heat in AZ without A/C but it wouldn't be pleasant.

message 5489: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments I've heard that, in Arizona's heat, even the pavement is too hot for dogs and cats to walk on.

message 5490: by Nina (new)

Nina | 6069 comments Many residents go to CO in the summer, but some do survive at home but with A/C. When we were there shopping we'd run from the shade of a tree to the next one. And I do mean run. Today is not pleasant here either/upper nineties and high humidity but later on in the week it will drop to the eighties.

message 5491: by Joy H., Group Founder (new)

Joy H. (joyofglensfalls) | 16697 comments We have a nice sunny day here. Very comfortable with a temp of 80 and low humidity. Can't believe it's August already.

Nina | 6069 comments "The Little Bookstore in Paris," by Nina George is the book I was referring to. I really am enjoying it but it is a book either you love or you don't like it at all. The bookstore is on a barge in the Seine. It is called the Literary Apothecary and the owner sells books to people with the idea that a particular book can help solve their problems. One of the quotes in the book is, "Memories are like wolves. You can't lock them away and hope they leave you."

message 5495: by Werner (new)

Werner Nina, whenever your book of memories is published, be sure to give us a heads-up. It'll be going on my to-read shelf!
