I love "New Year to Dallas" p. It was a really insignia to Eve Dallas past. It show that if Eve stayed with her parents she would not have make it to adult or if she did she would not be the person she is today.

It's no secret that Conspiracy is my least favorite book in the entire series and obviously we've had our share of disagreements over how that should've been handled. But I have other stories that are not my favorites either.Innocent in Death (view spoiler)
Creation in Death (view spoiler)
Now in terms of the novellas, a good chunk of them I would go as far as not making them canonical. The only exceptions I would make are: Midnight, Missing, Taken and Wonderment.
I've always had a problem with Ceremony. I don't have an issue with the Wicca vs Satanist stuff, that was a good way to point out the differences since many people confuse them. There are other ethical issues I have with Eve (view spoiler) and this colored the way I saw Eve for a while. I know there are gray areas and as the series has progressed, Eve is changing but this instance still bothers me.Holiday was ok up until (view spoiler) the ending which left me very upset.

I don't hate them per se, but compared to the recent titles, they're basically a victim of the first book syndrome, where they started out good but they haven't held up since.
It is interesting reading all the opinions on why you don't like one story or another. I read and/or listen to all of these books so many times and love them all. While I'm reading, I call out Roarke's actions, especially in the beginning when he goes over Eve's head. I call out Eve's when she is being too whatever. For me, the things that make me angry or happy are the reasons I love the series. The characters grow but fall back into old bad habits too. That all happens in real life and makes the characters realistic.
There isn't one book in this series that I wouldn't re-read. I pick different books for different reasons. There are some that I read/listen when I need a cry and some that make me laugh. I pick Innocent because I like the slap. I can't give someone a good punch in real life so I live it in my head.
Getting everyone's perspective gives me something to think about when I go back and visit a book. I will say this series always makes me enjoy my time with the characters and I love the insight I've gained from this group.

Well said Sharon! I feel much the same -
I love them all. The few that seem a little too far fetched, well it is in the future so easy to accept. Agree New York to Dallas was a little intense and depressing, but it gave to so much insight into Eve's past and how she is moving forward, that I don't think it can be skipped.
Reading Lady wrote: "I love them all. The few that seem a little too far fetched, well it is in the future so easy to accept. Agree New York to Dallas was a little intense and depressing, but it gave to so much insight..."Oh trust me, I've never read it and I don't intend to either.

Yeah talk about a case that blew up Eve's name and led her to becoming an accidental celebrity. I'll probably do a re-listen on Thanksgiving because I forgot the details of the Icove Case.

See I got a love/hate relationship with that book, I think Eve's higher ups and the people who were associated with The Mayor were trying to make her a figurehead for the NYPSD and obviously she didn't want that and I think if she had actually said that, probably would've hurt Whitney and Tibble's feelings but they would have understood and hopefully be reminded that one does not pick up a badge to get the attention, they do it just to protect the city.
In terms of the case, what made me tolerate it at least was that it reminded me of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and how the characters in the show were tackling a similar criminal who called himself The Laughing Man.

"A bit off topic but kinda relevant, you should see me talk about my boycott of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I've never watched anything Marvel-related since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 because that movie was just so bad I could never watch anything from Marvel anymore. Some of my friends try to talk me out of my boycott but I don't ever budge.
Same thing with my least favorite In Death books, I just don't budge on re-reading the books that I don't like. Although for research purposes, I did re-read Conspiracy and it was because I was working on something at the time.
I had a hard time with my buddy read of Thankless in Death the end of last year. I struggled with it so much that I didn't get around to reading it again until March of this year. There are so many horrible perpetrators throughout this series but for some reason Jerry disturbed me more on this reading. (view spoiler) I had to set it aside for a few months, with the holidays coming up the character literally turned my stomach.

Now I don't hate Vendetta per se, but my gripe with it was that Nora failed to make it more personal by not making the killer plot a kidnapping for Roarke. Sure Eve would've been able to save him, but she also would've been on the edge of breaking her code by almost killing Lady Justice and I think it would've added a nice refreshing twist.
I can't remember which ones but there were several books where I though Robb was just calling the books in. I remember because when the book where Peabody overhears something about dirty cops came out, I was so happy that Robb had got her mojo back.I hope this post makes some sense.
The book you are taking about is the one before “New York to Dallas “ I think it’s “Treachery inDeath”
Barbara "Cookie" wrote: "The book you are taking about is the one before “New York to Dallas “ I think it’s “Treachery inDeath”"Yes, that's the one! I loved that one!
I don't dislike any of the books and I'm re-reading the series again (3rd) time, but in witness ME Morris is Morse now and little things like that annoy me. Like detective Cartwright is never mentioned again even after Eve loses her badge and tells Feeney to give Peabody to her if she doesn't come back. Did she mean Carmichael? Just little inconsistencies bug me.. editors are there for a reason, right?
On the old J. D. Robb website, these character continuity errors were noted by Roberts and explained. However, there are others that occurred much later in the series!
That's good to know at least they were recognized. I just hate when it's like, "Whoops! We'll just ignore that happened." Thanks for the info.

I would also say Kindred was one that was really, really hard for me due to the first murder. So it wasn't a bad one per se but just one I have a really hard time with and is one I don't ever really do a re-read on unless I skip a lot of it.
Holiday was another that I wasn't a fan of all around too. The case and then the way Eve was acting about Peabody. So it's another I haven't ever really revisited.
Memory, Festive, and Concealed were ones I found more boring or one that just nothing about it stood out or appealed to me enough to go back to like that.
Devoted and Echoes were ones that really bothered me with the subject matter and felt really dark so it's why I am not a fan of them.
Leverage almost made me not one to read Connections due to what I felt was a almost personality back slide with Eve.
The novellas are okay but the only one I really thought was good was Interlude. I did like them but many were not my cup of tea.
