I just left Cleveland, Chicago and San Francisco in the 1880's with When We Were Strangers: A Novel. I used this book for my Illinois choice. It was a wonderful piece of historical fiction! My review is here:

Technically I read this on New Year's Eve, but I thought I'd include it in case anyone was still needing a Tennessee read. The Black Flower: A Novel of the Civil War by Howard Bahr (my review).

I also made a Tennessee favorite - boiled custard. I have the ingredients for Tennessee jam cake still to make, but that won't be until next week.

Nice review, Jenny! Have you read The Widow of the South? It also dealt with the Battle of Franklin and is a wonderful read. Your boiled custard looks delicious, by the way. I was telling a friend about your plan to cook your way across the United States along with your reading list, and she just loved the idea, as do I!

Suzanne, when I lived in Indiana, we toured Levi Coffin's home in Plainfield. He was a prominent underground railroad participant, and a well-known Quaker!

I just left Indiana too, with The Fault in Our Stars by John Green (my review is here.) I listened to the audio.

I just listened to this audio as well. I have a teenager (who is healthy) and she nor her friends are anything like the kids in this book! I totally agree with your review.

I took a brief trip into Kansas to read The Lichtenberg Figures by Ben Lerner. This is a poetry volume, so it was a quick read... I needed something quick since I'm bogged down by mighty tomes at the moment. Here is my review.

Finally made the dessert for this so I can say I read Arcadia by Lauren Groff, set in a hippie commune in upstate NY. My review is here. I then made a raw citrus cheesecake to pay homage to the characters' hippie food ways.

I just finished The Last Letter and I'm counting it towards Nebraska. It takes place in the Dakota Territory, so I guess it works also for Minessota and S. Dakota.
