I make all kinds of jewelry with beads, chain, charms, whatever I see that I like. I don't do any metal working or stone setting. I use to sell it at shows and have displays at some local stores but I now only make it for a couple of clients that want custom handmade jewelry and for myself. It started to be too much like a job and I already work fulltime. I was really interested in working with the leather though, just never got around to it. Knife sheaths, that sounds like a cool project.

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments Hi Dawn, I know you are going to fit in real well in this group, based on your author selection preference. Just the kind of books we love to read. Great friendly group here. My name is Sue and I live in Toronto, work from home in my own business, my husband drives Tour Coach buses in Ontario and USA. I have 2 Lab brothers, 6 years old, that rule the nest in this house. I am on the computer here, and 1 Lab is ready to hit one of the keys so I stop typing, and the other one is guarding the door. Looking forward to discussing books further with you. Take care.

Sue

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I like it. I've made a few for other people. I made one for a friend who had a custom knife. It got me started collecting knives...anything to feed my OCD and start another collection I guess. I have a friend at church who makes jewelry. She also plays the dulcimer. It was her husband I made the custom sheath for. I've made a few others, pouches for folding knives. I also make belts, wallets etc.

Looking forward to "talkin' books".

Dawn G | 692 comments I can't narrow it down to one. I have been trying to do that for some time now. I know you asked for one but these are my tops; I'd recommended them all. I will say Mo Hayder, and I don't know how I forgot Val Mc Dermitt, are my favorite authors.
Hayder: The Treatment and Hanging Hill- 2 of my favorites
McDermitt: Place Of Execution - loved this book
Deaver: Lesson of Her Death and A Maidens Grave
Crais: Suspect and Two Minute Rule
Slaughter: Criminal
Lisa Gardner, forgot her too: Live To Tell and Say Goodbye (eerie)
Jussi Adler-Olsen: The Absent One
Steve Mosby: Black Flowers (awesome)
So I guess I have to say I have 12 Favorite books.
And anything by Nesbo and Fossum
I know, too much!

Dawn G | 692 comments Thanks Sue and Sandra, we share the same ambition!

message 3058: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Dawn, THANKS for the awesome list. Twelve is 12 times better than one! Will shuffle my to-read shelf accordingly. Except I have to read series in order. OCD is what I blame that on (lol). In our Karin Slaughter Q&A a week or so ago, she said Mo Hayder was a big fav of hers. I have also read that Karin and Mo try to outdo each other in terms of darkness. I have yet to read Deaver and McDermid, so they move up. Just a couple of days ago I got my Amazon order of Karen Fossum's first book--it's an English translation. It was hard to find and finally got it off Amazon UK.

Don't know Adler-Olsen or Mosby so will look them up. The only book on your list that I have read so far is Crais' Suspect. Loved it.

Here are two for you, Dawn. My favs of the year so far are S.J. Bolton's Now You See Me and Tess Gerritsen's The Surgeon. Dennis LeHane's Drink Before the War is another fav. Great to have you in the group, Dawn. Hope you continue to exchange ideas with the rest of us!

Chris

Sue (coccotoro) | 2087 comments Hi Dawn,
Thanks for providing a list of your favourite books. I enjoy reading mystery, crime, suspense, psychological thrillers. I'm also OCD about reading series in order.
Check out orderofbooks.com and save under favourites, to see the sequencing of books published by an author. Very helpful.
My favs of the year so far are: The Surgeon by Tess Gerritsen , Snakes & Ladders by Sean Slater , The Guilty. Sean Slater by Sean Slater , Blindsighted (Grant County, #1) by Karin Slaughter Don't Look Back by Gregg Hurwitz and lots of others.

Also check out an author, Steven Dunne, who wrote The Reaper by Steven Dunne , The Disciple (Damen Brook, #2) by Steven Dunne , Deity (Damen Brook, #3) by Steven Dunne , The Unquiet Grave by Steven Dunne .

Plan to read Crais books, and heard from another member in this group, Janet, who raved about, Black Flowers by Steve Mosby . Also have read books by Jussi Adler-Olsen.

Well this is just the tip of books that I have read or want to read.

Sue

The Sean Slater books sounded good to me so I ordered them from Alibris; The Survivor, Snakes & Ladders and The Guilty. All for $13.94. My library doesn't have any of his books. I will let you know how I like them.

I even had the privilege to listen to him at a book reading/signing. John Sanford and Tami Hoag are favorites, too. Looking forward to hearing more discussion on these "thrillers."

Matt Thomas | 4 comments I too come to this group via Brian Freeman. I found his books just by happenstance in the mystery section of my library (in Orange County, CA), and he's been my favorite mystery author ever since. Not to take anything away from Brian (I doubt any other author will unseat him, though he does have competition from 2 other authors in the category), but Brian just can't manage to write a book every few weeks, so I'll hope GoodReads can steer me to some authors of similar quality. I am also a writer myself, and I actually did interview Brian once on my independent Blog ... I'll post the link to the mod with permission for him to copy and paste it if he would like to. Anyway, I'm looking forward to Goodreads!

Hi Sandy, I used to live in Duluth back in the 70s (now I'm in Rochester)! I too was drawn to Brian because of the setting. It's so fun to be able to picture the scenes he describes. Welcome to this great group of people in A Good Thriller!

I just joined, and to make sure I didn't break any rules, I didn't post this link to a Brian Freeman interview I did a couple years back. It doesn't link to another group, but it is to a blog site, so I thought if that isn't something you'd want to have a link to, no worries, if you want, you have my permission to copy-and-paste the interview as-is or with edits. I think the interview is quite good ... Brian's responses are always interesting!

Here's the link: http://meta-blogger.net/mysteryscene/...

Matt Thomas | 4 comments Thanks everyone for the warm welcome, and thanks Sean for posting the link to the Brian Freeman interview.

And Chris, in answer to your question, who are my OTHER 2 favorite Mystery authors who 'compete' if you will for Brian's title of #1 in my view, it's two quite different ones. The first is the classic, much more 'hardboiled' Lee Child and his Jack Reacher series. I've read them all and love them all. I call Jack Reacher 'Hardboiled with a Heart' if you will.

The other one, who is Brian's closest competitor, is Louise Penny, a Canadian novelist featuring Inspector Armand Gamache and set in Quebec, largely in the village of Three Pines. They are similar in tone and type to Brian's 'Stride Country/Duluth' novels, since they feature all very detailed local settings and the main cast of characters are very deep and intense so the stories are as much (or more) about the people as the plot.

Lorrea - WhatChaReadin'? (whatchatreadin) Welcome Sandy and Matt. I hope you all will enjoy our group and be prepared to have your book list grow and grow.

Brian, I have very few actual books as I usually use the library, but I have a copy of Still Life, Ms, Penny's first in her series , sitting on a shelf in my bedroom. Your description of her style is enough for me to jump her ahead in my mile-long to-read list! Thank you!!

Matt Thomas | 4 comments Wowzers! I was pretty sure that Louise Penny would be well known here. She's won a bunch of awards (as has Mr. Freeman). The thing about her work that is 'similar' to Brians, is for people that LOVE the characters first, and the story second, she's a Master. Just like Brian, believe me, the stories are epic and totally riveting. But in Brian's work, we care so deeply about Stride and Serena and Maggie and everything that goes on with them, and they are central to the story.

Louise Penny does that. Inspector Armand Gamache, his second Inspector Beauvoir, and the colorful cast of characters from Three Pines including Ruth Zardo, the famed poet, Bistro owners Oliver and Gabri, and nothing less than the village of Three Pines itself. Much as Duluth is a 'character' in Brian Freeman's works, Three Pines is a living character in Louise's works.

Anyway, I can't recommend Louise any more highly. She is in perfect company.

And welcome to all recent New Folk who joined just since I did!
