Amber Martingale I miss my dog. She's been gone since 2003. Throat cancer.

message 4970: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Mar 19, 2015 11:29AM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments We lost our dog some years ago also. She was a Sheltie. I haven't gotten another dog because we have 2 cats (we had more) who are older (Xander is about 18) and I don't want to upset the household for them.

message 4971: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Buttercup was a Cockerpoo. I can't afford a new dog.

message 4972: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I think when Xander passes (if I think Luna can handle it) we may consider a rescue or animal shelter dog.

message 4973: by Rhonda (new)

Rhonda Lee Wunder | 386 comments Out of all the dogs we have had over 30 years, only two have been bought in a pet store. We have loved them all. We have three right now. Holly, Cori, and Georgy. They bring smiles to our faces most of the time.

message 4974: by Mike (the Paladin) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I'm pretty much a sucker for any animal. I'd probably try to take care of a cow if someone dropped one off.

message 4975: by Sophie (new)

Sophie | 1126 comments I had a Dalmatian that I had to have put to sleep a couple of years ago after he had an accident. He was the sweetest dog and if I got another half as good-natured as him I'd be a lucky girl. Just wish I had the time for another dog but have to stick to my 2 cats for now :(

message 4976: by Cameron (new)

Cameron Wiggins | 369 comments When I was president of our local humane society a 11-year old girl brought in the ugliest, skinniest mixed terrier/dachshund mix. Pilgrim went to D-day. I brought him home. He took a lot of work. He had no bill of rights, he had been beaten and not fed very often and given virtually no attention. He ended up being the smartest dog that we ever had and we have always had dogs. His vocabulary was the largest vocabulary I ever saw in a dog. He was the smartest dog that I ever had hands down. I would take him to the grade school. You would ask him what 6+6 was and he would bark 12 times, you would ask him what 4+4 was and he would bark 8 times and so on. He even helped me train our rescue long-haired dachshund, Ernie, how to count, but Ernie is no Pilgrim at it. Pilgrim had a stroke and we had to put him down last year on our 26th wedding anniversary. I will never forget my little companion.

Cameron

message 4995: by Graham (new)

Graham | 14 comments Hello. I'm Graham from Australia. I've been on Goodreads for less than a year. I mostly thought it would be useful for keeping track of what I had read (I try to read 40 books a year) and receive some recommendations, but I've started to notice that there's a lot more on this site than I realised. I'll confess, I'm not much of a participant when it comes to the internet - more of an observer - so this is a little new for me, but everyone here seems to have a lot of fun and the discussions are interesting.

I'm a reader and a writer of thrillers. I signed a contract with a traditional publisher last year and my debut novel is on its way (a topic for another thread). I hope nobody will consider me the spectre at the feast if I do talk about my book someday - I don't wish to steal the spotlight from the courageous and determined self-publishers that pass through here.

I do love to read, and my taste is eclectic, but I always love a good thriller. Ultimately, I'm searching for that perfect sentence, the one that makes you stop and want to say the words aloud. This is also why I write: I've written a few sentences that I'm very proud of, but the ones I read are always much more brilliant. I see the readers here have all selected favourite quotes, so I believe that this search is not an unusual one and is perhaps something we can share.

I'm also interested in hearing insights. I started writing thrillers to create the kind of stories that I wanted to read, so there's no better place for a writer (and a reader!) than in the company of other readers. Having said that, I'm just happy to talk about books.

I look forward to many interesting discussions (though I hope I'm much less loquacious in the future). Please add me as a friend if you like :)
