Random Question:
If a book is part of a sub-series do you count the series number or the sub series number?
e.g Trudi Canavan has 6 novels in the Kyralia series, however this is made up of two trilogies.
Or Jacqueline Carey - 9 books - 3 trilogies?

Unless it's one continuous story like Wheel of Time, Discworld etc. I'd say books marketed as separate trilogies would need to count as 1 - 3 points.
I counted the Jacqueline Carey trilogies as 1-9. Yes they each have a different main character, but they are a continuous story and it will confuse the reader if you don't read them as 1-9.
I am not familiar about the Kyralia series. If you're planning on reading them I will do some research.
If the trilogies are not a continuous story but just set in the same universe than they are counted as 1-3.
A subserie is a subserie and begins counting at 1.

I used Kyralia as an example, as I've already read them.
In this case the second Trilogy picks up 20 years after the end of the first - keeping most of the original characters - only older.
Though, I have the last 3 books of Raymond E. Feist's The Riftwar Cycle to read. Its part of a continuous story, and though I guess you could read them without having read the prior novels, you'd lose quite a bit, as the series follows a set of characters from the first book all the way through.

What are the three last books? That makes it easier for me to find out how they will count or if someone else has already read them please join in with your thoughts.

I just have a question, as I have possibly misunderstood part of the rules to this challenge.
We must read in order, but can we skip books as we go? The example that made me think of this is Crusader's Discworld reads. He read 23, then 25, then 30. I thought you had to read 24 after 23 in order to get the points for 25. Obviously if you read 24 after 25 it doesn't count, but I am confused about the skipping numbers aspect.
Can someone clarify this for me? Thanks!
(Crusader, I am not trying to attack you. I just got confused about how the challenge works when I saw your post and want to clarify for my future reads!!)

That's actually a very good question Varla and something I might have misunderstood. My jumping around is due to the fact that I've read the books that fall in-between those during the Discworld challenge, so I only read the ones I haven't read. Barbara will have to rule on how the scoring will work in this case.
I think this jumping only makes sense in the Discworld novels since in a normal series you will definitely want to read them in order.

You have to have read the previous books to get the full points on a book. So if you read book 10 in a series you have had to read book 1-9 to get 10 points. You don't have to have read books 1-9 in order as long as you have read them all. That means you can skip numbers if you have read them previously. So what Crusader is doing is ok and his books count.
Don't worry about asking questions like these, Varla Fiona. I also feel bad if I see someone doing something and I am not sure if that is ok because I too don't want to attack someone. But if a challenge or rules of a challenge are unclear then just ask. Like in this case Crusader wasn't even sure if what he was doing was allowed so it might clear up something for other people too.

I thought it was the way previous challenges like this were run (skipping those you have already read and having the rest count), but this bit threw me:
The catch is that you have to read the books in order. If you first read book 3 and then book 6 and then book 1 you will not get full points. For every book read out of order you will get one point.
That can easily be understood to mean that you HAVE to read everything in order for them to count. But obviously on second reading you spot that those make no mention of having read books 2,4 & 5 which then causes them all to count only 1 point.

The rules are actually quite simple but difficult to explain. At least for me, but I'll see if I can think of a way of describing the rules that makes sense and is easy to understand and post them in the first message.
And rest assured if you were counting points for books that you shouldn't, I would have told you by now. :)

Do any books we have read from 1 Jan 2013 count, or only those read once we officially join the challenge?

Books worth 1 point:

(Read out of order, only 1 point)
Books worth 2 points

Books worth 5 points

Books worth 6 points

Books worth 10 points

I have read Wolves of the Calla now which is 5 points (as i read the whole series so far) but now I want to read Wind through the keyhole, which is book 4.5 (stephen king) but the 8th one that was published.
and I will then read Nr 6 after 4.5.
Now I would like to know how the points will work for that. In any case I get 5 points for Wolves, but how will points then work for Wind, and then Song of Susannah (Nr 6)
My understanding is:
Wolves: 5 Points
Wind (Nr4.5) 1 point as its out of order
Song (Nr6): 6 POints as i read all the previous books then.
Could someone verify for me?
Last year we discussed reading a series that was published out of order and then we agreed that you have to decide to either read it in the order it was published or the order it was intended and get points according to what you are doing.
Since you are saying you get 5 points for Wolves of the Calla I conclude that you want your points based on the publication date. And then what you are saying is indeed how many points you get.
Since you are saying you get 5 points for Wolves of the Calla I conclude that you want your points based on the publication date. And then what you are saying is indeed how many points you get.

I have read books one to 4 prior to the challenge.
Then I read book 5 as start to this challenge,
(Book 4.5 was published during the time I was reading 5, but I want to read 4.5 now before reading 6)
The question is basically:
1) How many points do I then get for reading 4.5, after having read 5.
2) Do I then still get 6 point for reading book 6 (after I mixed it up by reading 4.5 out of order?)
If I understand your last sentence correctly, lets say I am reading on pub date, which changes NR4.5 to NR 8, my points will work as follow:
Wolves, NR 5 : 5 points (Read 1-5 in order, 5 for this challenge)
Wind, NR 8 : 1 point, since its out of order
Song, NR 6 : 6 points since I have already read books 1-5?
Im just a bit confused, and under normal circumstances I would read in publication order, but in this case, the happenings in Wind, which is book 8, happens between books 4 & 5.
The problem is that we don't use half points in this challenge and youu need to decide how you read a series. Since you have stated that you normally read a series in publication order I will assume that is what you are doing. Then you get 5 points for Wolves, 1 point for Wind and 6 for Song.

That's how I thought it should be, and am happy with that. I will use it as such then, whenever I get to them again... got so much reading to catch up on.
Total Points = 215
Total Books = 73
1 point (read out of sequence): 1x2=2
1 point: 1x23=23
2 points: 2x22=44
3 points: 3x13=39
4 points: 4x7=28
6 points: 6x1=6
7 points: 7x2=14
9 points: 9x1=9
10 points: 10x1=10
40 points: 40x1=40
This is such a fun idea! And it gives me incentive to finish all the series I start... or carry on with them at least.

With regards to this question and Raymond E Feist.
We didn't really resolve it before.
What if a series is marketed as both? depending on the country of publication?
From HarperVoyager UK:
"But now we really have something huge to celebrate when Ray visits the UK this month. For MAGICIAN’S END – the 30th book in the Riftwar Cycle – marks the epic conclusion to this phenomenal series. And a truly worthy final volume it is, too."

If it is marketed as both you can count it as both. But if the last book is the 30th in the series you have had to have read al 29 other books for it to count as 30.
Thanks Barbara! :)
I have! Raymond E Feist is actually the Author that got me interested in the Fantasy Genre and I've been reading this series for over 10 years now. And the first book - "Magician" is still one of my favorites!!

I have seen people talking about books like that and considering them series. So yes you can use it.

We are reading from 1 january 2013 until 31 december 2013.
There are no tasks to complete but points to be gathered. You gather points by reading books that are a part of a series. For every book that is first in a series you will get one point, for every book that is second you will get two points etc. If a series like Discworld has 40 books you can get 40 points for the last book in the series.
The catch is that you have to read the books in order. If you first read book 3 and then book 6 and then book 1 you will not get full points. For every book read out of order you will get one point.
You don't have to read all the books during the challenge. So if you have already read books 1-5 in a series last year or before and read book 6 in 2013 you will get 6 points as long as you have read them.
