Introduction thread - always need one of these

I'm Daryl and have wanted to read this series for years but have been very intimidated by its size. I hope I can keep up :)

That's very cool. Thanks Bryce!
PS; are you guys seriously going to always blame Gail? you haven't read all the moderator names then. :p
(i wasn't going to say..."
No prob. I figured the more the merrier! :)

I've read through GOTM Deadhouse Gates last year, and found myself more conflicted than I ever have been with books. On the one hand, I love some of the characters, I love the political intrigue, I love the depth of everything, although I still don't get the magic system much at all.
On the other hand, I could not stand some of the characters, and the writing style didn't always sit well with me - the book is very much non reader-friendly.
I want to make it through this series, though, so I'm joining this group and intending to make it through, although I will be starting later - I'm finishing The Whitefire Crossing, and once that is done I'll hopefully have my hands on A Memory of Light.

Ive realised I havent introduced myself.
Ive been reading the Malazan books since about a year after GOTM came out, im sure I remember getting it and then DG about a week or so later. Ive reread the books several times over the years (some of them more often than others) and I reread the main sequence again back in oct/nov last year.
Having some good discussions and arguments about the world/story/characters and plotlines is something ive been doing with a few friends for a while now and finding more peole to scream at sounds great *evil laugh*.
Here's hoping I dont piss off too many people
LOL Sounds like you are a perfect Bridgeburner David.
Welcome aboard Scott, hope you enjoy the series more with an active discussion happening in the background. Otherwise you can spend timebitching and arguing discussing and debating with David :)
In creating this group, I hoped to get a few people together to read through the series slowly and try and understand the world that SE created. We are goign to have a fair mix of people here, so....have fun!

I have tried with Malazan before and gave up during book one: the sheer weight of pages, work, reading commitments and the overwhelming complexity of the world...
Hoping a group read may - if nothing else - spur me on!
Sam

I am a newbie fantasy fan, and i have never read the series. I have been waiting sooo eagerly and without avail for Winds of Winter (GoT book 6) and im sure this will open some new doors in the mean time!
Looking forward to great discussions and meeting new friends!

I burned through the books as fast as I could, bought a couple and got the rest from the library. I just picked up the first in the new series (Forge of Darkness) and also Esslemont's Orb Scepter Throne.
I'll have to track down a copy of GotM...

the plan is 4 chapters a week, so if next week you do one a day you're already caught up again.
and unless lee did something weird, the threads won't self-destruct after a week :)

I'm an avid fantasy reader from Western Australia.
I plan to read the whole series through - though slowly so far as it seems quite involved - and become involved in group discussions.

Tried this once a couple of months ago. Got a little bored and put it down. Looking forward to trying it again.
Great to see new people joining. because it is a slow read, four chapters per week, there should be ample time to catch up. If not, the threads will still be active and people will always be dropping back in to comment.

I'm Aaron from the Philippines. I am intending to read and finish a long epic fantasy saga this year and was choosing between WoT and Malazan. I read both series overview and general opinion about them. Figured Malazan would be more right up my alley with it's -- as I've read -- gray characters and much talked-about complexity(which somewhat daunts me but hell, huge challenges usually are the most rewarding). :D
Very glad I found this read-along group just right in time! I'm hoping it could help me out with initial confusion everyone is saying when starting this series.
Cheers,
Aaron :)
You made the right choice Aaron. I am biased, but having read this series and 6 of the WoT books in the last 12 months I have to say Malazan is by far superior in every way, except, for wanting a lighter easier read. I think both authors do well with such a large cast of characters, but for me, the Malazan story is far more detailed and interesting. It is also darker, horrific in parts and bloody hardwork too. But very rewarding for the reader.
Welcome to The Fallen.
Welcome to The Fallen.

Lately I've been reading the Wheel of time series and since the last book is coming up I started looking for a new seires to fill the void WOT is about to leave, then I read an article about why I should read the Malazan series, and it had a link to this group, besides a friend of mine was suggesting joining the read with him, and I thought it would be a great aportunity to try it.
I'm looking forward to reading the series with you :)
Welcome Aaron and Jasmine. Don't worry there are a good number of us first timers around. I plan to take to task any of the re-readers that try to spoil things for us. :-)

I first picked up the series about 6 or 7 years ago and gave up after deadhouse gates, not because I didn't enjoy it, but because I ended up lost and did not understand what was happening anymore.
I always thought that I would give it another chance anyway, so... Here I am!
Reading the quality discussions already going on here and the amount of passion that all of you are showing, I'm sure I will really enjoy it this time.
I am already 2 chapters behind, but I will try to follow the pace and comment from time to time.
Very nice to meet you all!
Welcome Franck. I think we have a good mix of new and old readers that it should be a good experience for all.

Hi Sabrina, sounds like good timing indeed!
Enjoy the last Wheel of Time and feel free to join the discussion on Garden of the Moon with what you remember.
Hi everybody! I am Evgeny. I recently finished book #6 (The Bonehunters) in Malazan saga which I consider to be the best book so far. I finally decided I am far enough in the series to join this group :)
Contrary to the popular belief, I did not have any troubles reading the first book - and I like it a lot. I was not impressed with the second book (except for Chain of Dogs plotline) and hated Midnight Tides.

Ahaaa... so you finally gave in?!
I'm glad to see it!

Kinda stoked to have found this group thanks to Seak (Bryce L.), yay!!
I first heard of this series after reading G.R.R.Martin's A Dance with Dragon and desperately searching for a book to hold me off until book 6. After accepting that recommendation, I hunted down and found Gardens of the Moon in the summer. I nearly died!
It was a challenge to latch on to the book though. The writing was great and pulled me in, but the characters weren't (at that time). It took about 5 restarts before I finally got past the first couple chapters and of course the rest is history.
I am currently 80+% through Deadhouse Gates and I am seriously considering whether or not this series has usurped A Song of Ice and Fire for MOST AWESOMEST SERIES EVER!! Sigh.
Favourite Characters thus far - Kruppe, Fiddler, Apsalar, Toc, Iskaral Pust, Sha'ik Reborn, Apt
Least Fave - Anomander Rake, Lorn, Paran
Annoying Characters - Tattersail, Felisin
And I am Dania by the way! Nice to meet you all ^^

Thank you Hanne, I can't wait to see how it all ends. I will try my best to add to the discussion. :)
HI Dania and welcome to the group. If you are loving the series in book two, wait until you get deep into the series, book 5 and 6 is where it all starts to come together in your head and you will be amazed at the size of the story that you are following.
Unfortunately it is only going to take us about 14 months to read the series, so you'll need to find another 3 years to fill in before your next GRRM instalment ;)
You could of course re-read Malazan again like some of us are doing :)

Welcome! I'm so glad you're such a big fan already. And I'll forgive you for your opinions on Anomander Rake, unless this changes your mind:

It gets better? Well I think I am sold, just pages away from completing Deadhouse Gates.. I was literally in tears. Pitiful.
With your foreshadow I guess I am officially Fallen.

I must admit he does look awesome lmbo! But oh my god... I guess I shall try to see why people like him in my re-read.
Thanks for the welcome guys :D and all the best for you ^^

OMG! You are in trouble. I am thinking I might be buying some shares in Kleenex, cause you have a whole lot of emotion to get through with this series. I kid you not, there has been a couple of occasions where I was reading on the train (I wont say which books) and had to stop reading and blink quickly and swallow a huge lump in my throat. Not something I am used to with reading. This series is by far the most wickedest emotional rollercoaster I have ever been on.

o-oh. from the end of book 2?
that doesn't bode well for me.
Lee - those kleenex stocks might be a smart move :)

The mop will do cause I kinda just let 'em roll you know... :D Just let em roll on by. I don't even know how much I've cried until I take a break.

¡Hola
Kat here. I've not read these novels previously, and am thus grateful to have so many re-readers to rely upon to explain particulars I've some difficulty to grasp. It appears that one picks up on details differently the second time round.
I was introduced to these novels one or two years ago - a close friend of mine has been pressuring me to read them, but despite having bought the book and all, it just hasn't felt right to pick it up, you know?
Until now! I'm already getting hooked - in a different manner than I'm used to, though. I usually live around a novel when I get hooked on it - but there's just so much information I can't read as heavily and fast paced as I'm used to. I have to digest it, first.
I'm looking forward to reading along with you guys!

We're looking forward to having you read along with us.
Welcome.
Hola Kat and a belated welcome. I have enjoyed commenting with you during the first few chapters.
I certainly looks like we are going to have a lot of fun with this slow paced read. I think by taking so long, people will stay in the chatter longer, because it is a bit easier to catch up if you miss a week or so. Plus there a few people still actively going back and discussing earlier chapters, which is great to see.

Yaaaay Pat! Another newbie! I hope you become a crazed fan like maself :D

I too am absolutely convinced that this is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the very best in fantasy fiction. The sheer intellectual creativity and emotional power of this world that Erikson/Esslemont have created just boggles the mind. I have read the entire series three times so far, and I know that I will continue to reread it as long as I live. Every time I reread a book I get so much more out of it, as more and more 'aha' moments manifest themselves.
My favorite books in the series are Gardens of the Moon, Deadhouse Gates, Memories of Ice, Toll the Hounds and The Crippled God. I loved the first of 'The Kharkanas Trilogy' too, Forge of Darkness and can't wait to see how that plays out.
Cheers!
