Introduction thread - always need one of these
Reminds me of the Monty Python - "Bruces" sketch. You mind if we call you David just to clear things up? :D
Hi guys, sory for the late intro, I'm a newbie here and I've been lurking the Gardens of the Moon thread last week till I was able to finish the book 2 days ago :) The discussion thread per chapter was really really helpful for my appreciation of the first book since I've overlooked most of the details and clues while reading, and the threads helped rectify that. Kudos to the mods and the active and spoiler-conscious members :P I hope its still ok to post a question that's been nagging me at the GOTM - Finished! thread :) Thanks!
Please do post in the GotM threads. Some of us will be around to answer your questions.Welcome to The Fallen.
Hi and welcome! THe more the merrier, and I think I speak for most of us that yes, we would definitely go back to older threads.
Welcome JL. There are plenty of active Malazan crazy participants so feel free to discuss in the older threads.
Hello everyone. I started reading GOTM last year in March, figuring I could finish it in a 3 week vacation I took when my daughter was born. It took 2 1/2 months, just for lack of time more than anything else. I'm about halfway through deadhouse gates and having a much easier time of it so I should be able to keep up.
Welcome Matt. You may find it hard to read along with us as we're reading at a very slow pace. In the short term there are plenty of discussion threads for the first two books.
The group has a good mix of first timers like me and re-readers that have led to some really good discussion.
One thing I can tell you is that most everyone here became COMPLETELY INSANELY OBSESSIVE about reading it! *raises hand* It's all I did whenever I could, and I managed to shirk whatever wasn't a crisis at the time so I could go on reading. And I'm now reading this a SECOND TIME!!! Yes I'm shouting because I love this series!
Hi! I started reading the series when it first came out, but my life unfortunately doesn't allow much time for long hours of proper reading, and these are books that demand that if I'm going to keep track of what's going on, so I'm only been making very, very slow progress. I'm up to Reaper's Gale but it's on hold at present. I'm probably not going to be able to take part in the regular group reading progress, but I'm finding browsing through your discussions really interesting and hope to be able to contribute something from time to time anyway.
Hi all, Jeremy here. Just started reading Gardens of the Moon and LOVING it. Brand new to Goodreads, so playing catch up but judging how fast I'm flying through Gardens, I should be caught up to the group in no time. Looking forward to discussion with others who are enjoying this series as much as I am!
Welcome Jeremy!Gardens is pretty much different then other books in the series. It was written in 92/93 and it was first published in 99 while second book came in 2000. I stormed through it too but slowed down a bit afterwards. Plot get expanded with each book (I'm on fifth now) so take your time and don't rush it.
I'm actually not speeding through them at all. I read them slowly. There's too much info to digest for me. I'd miss out on stuff otherwise.
My first time through was manic. I speed read as it is (although not on my second time through I am not) and on my first read there were times where I had to stop reading and take a breather as I was reading faster and faster completely absorbed. Then realise I had gone 4 stations past my stop :(
@Lee Ha ha. I've definitely done that before. One time when I was a teenager I was so absorbed in reading a book that I failed to notice that I had gotten on the completely wrong train and didn't work it out until I was 45 miles down the track towards a completely different city. Needless to say I missed my appointment but I did finish my book; it was a Pratchett I think.
Wow, that must be the farthest I ever heard anyone head in the wrong direction without noticing, hehe. But a great book is a great book!...
Hi everyone, I first picked up Gardens of the Moon a mere two years ago but became instantly hooked and read all of the books pretty much back to back.
Hello, I'm Silvio obviously. This is my first time reading the Malazan Book of the Fallen. I'm about two thirds of the way through Deadhouse Gates right now and hopefully I'll catch up with the rest of you before the end of Memories of Ice. The only thing I'm very impressed with so far is the detailed setting, but luckily that's what I care most about in any book, so I'm having plenty of fun!
Hi guys! SIlvio we're going at a slow pace so I'm sure you'll catch up and then exceed us fairly quickly.
@Kat, it was because I was nearly crying and trying to swallow the lump in my throat. There are some of the most emotional scenes I have ever read in this series. I am not one for crying much, especially on trains reading fantasy, but man.....you've got some serious kleenex moments in this series.
Lori wrote: "Hi guys! It's only two or maybe three times slower than I would go through the series on my own, and I like the chapter-by-chapter discussion format. I always have other reading plans I can push forward in the meantime, and I'm just glad it isn't two or three times faster than I would read.
@LeeHehe. So I have heard. I'm the emotional kind and cry rivers all the time when I read great books or watch great movies (or, rarely, when listening to great music!).
But I welcome tears. They make me feel human and, in a way, cleansed. And some books tear me apart. These did;

Actually, no. Not The Old Man and the Sea. I cried reading that one because it was so beautiful.
Just joined the group. I'm up to chap 14 of Gardens of the Moon...finally. It is taking me sometime but feel like I'm starting to make some connections with some of the characters. Anyone else find it difficult to follow sometimes!!?? Joined this group mainly to help me understand better some of the things that confuse me in the book.
Welcome Mick. Yeah as a first time reader I've struggled in places.
The chapter threads are REALLY useful. Don't be afraid to post questions or comments on those threads as well, people seem to be good about responding to older stuff.

Lori wrote: "GotM is so tough for the first half, it's amazing so many continued past that!"But oh so worth it when everything suddenly starts coming together!
Hi Mick,
The threads are very helpful, if you finish a chapter and have questions check that chapter thread as we have been discussing what has happened at length. It is likely that your question has been answered in there. We have been very strict on spoilers, so you can rest assured you wont read anything about future chapters in there, unless of course you click on one of those spoiler tags :)

Thanks very much for the welcome! I have had a look through some of the chapter threads and they have been very helpful. It definitely feels like its building toward a critical event that will bring a few things together. My reading pace is speeding and and getting easier. Thanks again.
Hi,
My name's Jack and I'm new both to Goodreads and it's forums. Less new to the Malazan Book of the Fallen though as I just finished Toll The Hounds last week. But don't worry, no spoilers from me!

Welcome Jack. Spoilers are OK, so long as they are in either spoiler tags (click the some html link is ok on the top right of the text box for the format) or a spoiler thread. It will be awhile before we are caught up to where you are, likely you be finished by then unless you are extremely patient.

Thanks Rob/Quik Ben,
I'll probably be finished aye, but my memory is pretty good (like Ice!) so I'm happy to contribute.
MOI was one of the best actually!
I'd be happy to jump in to the appropriate thread...

We are reading at a pace of 4 chapters a week. We have several rereaders who discuss larger implications of events in each to the whole series in spoiler tags.
Since I'm a first time reader of the series, I can't say for certain, but you may wish to finish the series before joining their discussions and reading the spoiler tagged posts.

I'll certainly give it a shot anyway, thanks for the help Rob
Hello everyone. I'd already read the series before joining this group, but I enjoy talking books that I liked(and those I didn't), and these books were awesome! I'm not super impressed with the Esslemont stuff, though(I've read Night Of Knives and Return Of The Crimson Guard). Is it worth reading more of his books in the series?
Welcome to the group Bryan. My favourite ICE book was Orb Sceptre Throne. The others fill in a bit if the lore between the main series. They track the travels of the Crimson Guard, Tayshrenn, and Traveller and more. I thought the last two were strongest. I think I might appreciate a reread of those novels after rereading the main series. I will hopefully be more aware of what little nooks and crannies ICE expands on.

@Rob - We had planned to distinguish using the colours of the Moranth. But I've forgotten what colour I am. Actually when I first started on goodreads I often found I was in threads that had other Davids so I tagged on the "Sven" so I knew who I was.
