Sam (theliteraryhooker) Week 5: Bike

I read: Tender Is the Night - F. Scott Fitzgerald
Rating: 3/5
Finished: January 12th, 2013

Last year, I read and loved The Great Gatsby, so I had high hopes for Tender is the Night. Unfortunately, it didn't live up to my expectations. The book feels much longer than it actually is, which I think can probably be attributed to the fact that the narrative is incredibly disjointed. The story follows Dick and Nicole Diver, a wealthy American couple living in Europe in the 20s. Dick falls in "love" with Rosemary Hoyt, a young actress. They begin a short-lived affair, which causes Dick to wonder if he made a mistake in marrying Nicole. The characters aren't easy to relate with, and the only character I was able to sympathize at all with was Nicole Diver. Nevertheless, I did enjoy the book for the most part, if only because of the parallels with F. Scott Fitzgerald's own life.

Items to claim:
Bicycle:
"...I walked down toward that building of yours on the lake to get my bicycle." (pg. 120)
Lightning: "..."frightening sky and savage filaments of lightning and world-splitting thunder..." (pg. 156)
Curly hair: "...it was her fine-spun hair, bobbed like Irene Castle's and fluffed into curls." (pg. 148)
Necklace: "She fiddled with the glass grapes on her necklace." (pg. 215)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Way to go Sam!
Jennifer it didn't let's access it so I hit the request for access. If you get a message from jfroberts001 that's me :)

message 358: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H I have never linked to a Google Doc before but I do believe I fixed the problem if you want to give it a try :)

message 359: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) That did it! Pretty OCD too lol

message 360: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I'm hoping to finish my eye book either today or tomorrow. I'm trying to finish it today so I can use it for a few items for the Rapid Reader challenge, but we'll see!

I just noticed though that the paper edition I have is completely different from the Kobo edition, which is weird. It doesn't seem to be abridged or anything, just...different lol.

message 361: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Sometimes they vary like that. It's odd I know!

message 362: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I've seen some with chapter breaks in different places and things like that, but parts of the actual story are completely different. That one is new to me! lol

message 363: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Huh, I looked it up on Amazon, and it seems like the story has some differences between the first book in the series that's sold alone, and the first book that's included in the complete series version. Now I want to read them both! I feel like a crazy person LOL.

message 364: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Okay...stupid question:What is a KoBo? :)

message 365: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) It's an ereader

message 366: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Btw ill turn our points in tomorrow. Without double checking to be positive Sam's bike review should give us 3 points.

message 367: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Yup, I think based on the post you made earlier this week, my items should have given us 3 :)

Jennifer, it's basically Canada's answer to the Nook lol. I always said I'd never get an eReader, but I'm kind of in love with my Kobo, haha!

message 368: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H I'm done with my shoulder book now I just have to stop goofing around and write the review :)

Review:

I liked this book very much. There are still a lot of secrets regarding Kate, but I'll be glad to find them out in the next book. We are a bit thrown into this world, not everything is explained and you have to figure it out, but I prefer this to any info-dumping. Kate is tough, cocky, and funny. I can definitely see her becoming on of my favorite female characters. Curran, the Lord of Beasts, is a temperamental hero and a great match for Kate. The post-apocalyptic flavor of the world-building really appeals to me and I think the mixture of fantasy and sci-fi was original. There's not much romance at this point, but it's promising. It's the first book I've read by this author, and I wish I'd read it sooner.

message 370: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Jennifer the KD books get better and better. By the end of book 2 I was HOOKED! lol

message 371: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Ok it was 4 points, bike, curly hair, glasses, and lightning. Once Sam's eyes book is done we should have some more :)

message 372: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H So, do we have 11 or 13 points now? I do believe I've lost track :)

message 373: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) 13 official. Once Sam's eyes book is in then wind & eyes for sure then whatever else she claims that is completed.

message 374: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H Awesome! Now we just need those words that none of has claimed yet (sock, rain, fruit...etc) to be called :)

message 375: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) I know, we're being killed in the clothing and body parts categories!

message 376: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I was going to claim rainbow with my eyes book since that one is harder to find, if that's okay. I can definitely get wind with my should book though!

So my items for my eyes book will be eyes, rainbow, hood and paper, unless there are other items that would work better for the team?

message 377: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Sam I think that'll be good. Hood and rainbow are two of the more difficult ones and its good to get those out of the way.

message 378: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Whoops just reread that and got it, Jenne. Sorry, it's Monday so I'm a little slow lol. Never mind the first part of my last post!

message 379: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I'll be reading Magic Strikes for shoulder week. I'll have to look through and see what other items I can claim. So now Melanie will be the only one left to read an Ilona Andrews novel LOL.

PS Jennifer, your items for the Rapid Reader Scavenger Hunt are brutal! The most I've found in any one book so far is two, haha!

message 380: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) I know right! Jennifer and ShoSho have not been nice this round lol. I loved magic strikes such a good book! I'm 1/4 in to my shoulder book and its way better than I expected :)

message 381: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I think I just got lucky with ShoSho's list because I managed to find six in the books I already had on the go, but I don't think that will be the case this week!

I'm excited to start Magic Strikes after all the great things I've heard about it. I'll probably be starting it tonight.

message 382: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Wait till you read the can I girl part. Soooo funny!

message 383: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Just finished my eyes book! I'll have my review up tomorrow :)

That was my goal...muhahaha! J/K
I've managed to find a total of 5 in 2 books. The thing that shocked me was that cashmere sweater was in about 80% of the books I looked in :)

message 385: by Melanie (new)

Melanie (lovebeingvegan) LOL! I totally agree, Sam - Jennifer your list is soooo tough!

And here I thought I was being nice :P...lol. Originally I had Krispy Kreme Doughnuts instead of glazed doughnuts :)

message 387: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I was worried about anvil but I ended up finding it in the book I was already reading. So that was lucky! Lol. Now to find the other 8 items I need...

Your list is going to give me nightmares LOL.

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Week Six: Eyes

I read: The Sword In The Stone - T.H. Whyte
Finished: January 14th, 2013
Rating: 3.5/5

This is the first book in The Once and Future King series, and it does kind of read like a first-in-series, in that some parts seem to mostly be there to set the scene and introduce you to characters who will be more important in later books. It's the classic tale of Merlyn and King Arthur, but the first book knows him as the Wart.

The first 15 or so chapters reminded me a bit of The Graveyard Book. Each chapter was more or less isolated from the others in terms of the plot: in one chapter, Wart is turned into a fish; in the next, he might be off fighting a fairy queen with Robin Hood (or Robin Wood, as he's called in the book.) I enjoyed most of these chapters, though a few did feel overly long and a bit dull.

The last 9-10 chapters really throw things into overdrive and start leading up to the next book. Suddenly it's 7 years later, and the chapters start connecting a bit more than the previous ones. I think I preferred this part of the book, since it felt more like it was leading somewhere. Overall though, I did really enjoy this take on King Arthur's childhood, and I can't wait to read the next book!

Items to claim:
Eyes:
"It looked at them with big, apprehensive eyes..." (Kobo chapter 5, pg. 28)
Rainbow: "In fact, you would have been a rainbow man to him, a beacon of flashing and radiating colours..." (Kobo chapter 5, pg. 27)
Hood: "...while Robin set his collar bone and made him a sling from the green cloth of his hood..." (Kobo chapter 12, pg. 5)
Paper: "He then demanded pencil and paper in quick succession..." (Kobo chapter 3, pg. 28)

I hope that works for rainbow! If Dawn wants more detail, I can post the whole paragraph (it talks about there being images in the seven colors of the rainbow, etc.)

message 390: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Sam it should be ok. She was ok with me using rainbow brite as a name.

message 391: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) Great! :) I'm glad that at least with my super-slow reading the past couple of weeks, at least I managed to find a few harder items lol.

I just started on Magic Strikes, but the Kate Daniels books are usually pretty quick reads (since they're impossible to put down!) so hopefully I'll finish it before the next item is called.

message 392: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) It's a good one I promise! One of my favorites in the series.

message 393: by Jenne (last edited Jan 16, 2013 02:04PM) (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) So with Sam's eyes review that's 16 points!

Here's where we stand now with what's been claimed and what's left with 2 or less:

Snow: Melanie
Mist/Fog: Sam
Rainbow: Melanie
Belt:Sam
Bra: Melanie & Sam
Hood: Jennifer
Necklace:Melanie
Elbow: Jenne & Sam
Shelf:Melanie

I have Instrument, hood, and mist this week with my shoulder book

message 394: by Sam (new)

Sam (theliteraryhooker) I can get mist and bra with Magic Strikes. Is there a particular misc. item I should be looking for this week?

message 395: by Jenne (new)

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Sam I guess go with sky if you have it. You only need 2 in that category shy and fruit. Both are pretty easy to find.

message 396: by Jennifer H (new)

Jennifer H I can definitely claim hood in the book I want to start reading for the next word called...I just hope snow, instrument, or shelf is called because my book has everything but those 3

Jenne (jennetheinstigator) Shoulder Week:
Read: Bound to the Prince by Deborah Court
Finished: 1/16/13
Rating: ★★★★★

My Review:
4.75
Wow I'm surprised by this book. It was really great! Elathan is heir to the throne of the fae. He's exiled himself following the death of his cousin. He hates all humans since they killed her. Igraine is planning on ending her life when she's kidnapped by Elathan. He's decided to bind her to him as his slave. She continues to surprise him and you start to wonder who is the one bound to who. Great world building, hit romance, and great action. This book has it all. I can't wait to continue with this series!

That'll be good! The clothing and body part categories have eaten our lunch lately! I'm really hoping fruit, socks, nose, or toes gets called next time! We need a perfect score this next week.
