Rory M. Cait: Thanks! I didn't even think it was an issue of the wrong book being selected. I know to look for that now.

Kristina
Just finished:

8. Get to Know the Author - Skinned by Robin Wasserman and I read the interview on Scott Westerfeld's blog.

Robin Wasserman's Skinned is a great introduction for her series. Taking place in a severely post-apocalypse future, readers find a world with superior technology that even stops death- allowing one to be downloaded into a mechanical body. Despite it's advances, this world is not perfect and is battling to come to terms with the new download procedure. Furthermore, most of the population lives in decrepit cities or in corp-towns, where they sacrifice freedom and rights for food and shelter. Only the super rich have catered lives in the country, full of food, energy, and anything technology can create. It is there that Wasserman's main character, Lia, is created, killed, and re-born into her new, machine body. While Lia does interact with others a great bit, the story really is about what is going on inside her. This first book serves it's purpose of setting up with who Lia was, what she has become, and what it all means. It is an exciting read that begs readers to consider what makes us human and would we know if we were not.

15 points, making my total 340.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Rory, Charity - my apologies! I actually didn't select the book for the link, I just put the [ book: ] tags around the title when I was typing my post and assumed it would pull up the right one. I'll have to be more careful of that in the future. I've edited my post and fixed the link. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Angela | 1934 comments Cait, I just recently read this book and thought it was excellent!! I also used it for the challenge.

message 4605: by Alice (new)

Alice (aliceg) | 254 comments I can't yet put my points for this book as it's for a two parter 25 point task but I can't not say i've read it. It was fantastic. I almost don't want to pick up another book because I don't want to forget this one or ruin it with other stories in my head! Here's the review I wrote for it:

I haven't been able to book this book down and have read it in the day! Throughout it I smiled and laughed and I cried once and nearly cried a couple more times too. It has made me want to write letters & find out more about Guernsey during World War 2. I feel like i've made friends in Elizabeth, Kit, Dawsey, Amelia, Isola and the rest of the Islanders and I mustn't forget Juliet, Sidney and Sophie. I wish they were real people and I could meet them. In fact I want to be Juliet and I'm stopping there cos i'm beginning to gush!

Oops forgot to say it's The Guernsey LIterary and Potato Peel Pie Society by MAry Ann Shaefer!

message 4606: by BJ Rose (new)

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Yea!! Finally finished another 25-pointer, and had lots of fun with this one.
This book is a gem! It is meant as a reference book for those reading works of fiction written in/about victorian times, and has a very extensive glossary for learning about those words that just don't explain themselves in stories.

25.9 SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words.
What Jane Austen Ate and Charles Dickens Knew: From Fox Hunting to Whist, the Facts of Daily Life in 19th Century England by Daniel Pool completed 4.18.09

Kristen Harvey Just finished two more books.. will post my list in a second. May Bird and the Ever After was a little freaky for a kids book.. but then it progressed and made more sense.. was still creepy, but I started to enjoy it.

Read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and really enjoyed it, cracked me up.

message 4624: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra I just finished "Blink" by Malcolm Gladwell, "Digital Culture" by Charlie Gere, "The Vulture" by Gil Scott-Heron, and "The Graveyard Book" by Neil Gaiman.

I never would have read "The Vulture" if vulture didn't rhyme with culture, and I'm really glad I did.

"Blink" was my book for 5.3, and the second two were for 15.7, and the last one is half of 10.10. That brings my total up 20 points to 255.

No problem. I am trying to use this challenge to encourage me to read something other than "trashy mystery novels" & was looking for other options myself.

Rory M. COMPLETED 15 POINT TASK

#5 Major Literary Prize / Birth year: Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George won the 1973 Newberry Award; I was born in 1973. For this task I read The Talking Earth (3/7/09 – 3/19/09)

TWO STARS - This felt like a book that a teacher would write to educate his/her students about the Seminole Indians and Calusa Indians in Florida. It was very heavy on details about the wildlife that lives in the Everglades and natural processes which were very interesting.

I question some of the research that was done in relation to the Seminole Indians and the Calusa Indians, an extinct tribe. Linguistic evidence suggests that the Seminole Indians are descendents of the Creek Indians of Georgia and Alabama. I'm not sure there is any archaeological evidence that the Calusa would have been in the areas described in this book or that they truly have any ties to the Seminoles.

However, I do know that some Seminoles link themselves to the Calusa. I'm not certain that I would promote this book heavily with my students as I don't think the scienfic facts were used to write it. It would have been more accurate to make a case to link the Seminole culture to the Creek culture.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss - I would have enjoyed this book so much more if I didn't actually know anything about the extinct peoples of Florida (which the Calusa are members of) or our modern day Seminole Indians.

Liz M 9. SARA'S TASK - Read a book that has a title of 12 or more words: Angels and Ages A Short Book About Darwin, Lincoln, and Modern Life (25 pts).

It may be short, but the ideas are so dense & varied that I think I actually read it 2.62 times. My mind would wander for a sentence or two and then when focused again on the text, I'd be left wondering how the author got from point A to point Psi & have to go back & re-read.

Tasks Completed: 15/40
Pages Read: 5008
New Total: 270 pts.

I liked Blackbird House. It was a little dark/depressing but what a great idea! How many of us have seen old homes and wondered about the lives it's lead?

I actually saw the movie long, long ago and enjoyed it. I enjoyed this book too, though it sometimes became a little too pretentious for me. I don't like it when authors try too hard to be deep and meaningful.
