sensibility peneed under 'a lady"
Sense and Sensibility was author Jane Austen's first novel to be published under pen name "A Lady."
and pride and prejudice which id move from somewhere else i used it
oh wait up, im guessing not... i just found this
Jane Austen's name was never attached to any of her published novels during her lifetime, and the title page of Pride and Prejudice read only:
BY THE AUTHOR OF "SENSE AND SENSIBILITY."

15. 5. Read any book written by an author who won a major literary prize in the year you were born. I was born in 1982 and Gabriel Garcia Marquez won the Nobel Prize for Literature so I read The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor which was a really easy and interesting read. (I couldn't get in to Love in the Time of Cholera)
5. 5. Read a Christian Fiction novel, a book about sacrifice, OR a book about something you would give up. I read The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis, which has lots of religious references, including the Aslan's sacrifices for a traitor.
That brings my total to 280 points

Joyce Carol Oates is a good one thanks I think I am going to read hers. She has also published under Lauren Kelly as you said but also Rosamond Smith.

Just finished another task for 15 points:
4. Novel that takes place in a location you plan to visit or have visited during Spring break Enduring Love by Ian McEwan, set in London (Maida Vale).
It was my first Ian McEwan - kind of felt a duty to try him... This one is/was on a UK A'level syllabus for English Lit... It was a good novel, but a bit tedious in places. But a good examination of madness and love, and the fine line between them, via the theme of stalking...

Just finished another task for 15 points:
4. Novel that takes place in a location you plan to visit or have visited during Spring break Enduring Love by Ian McEwan (set in London, Maida Vale)..."
Ian McEwan is my favourite author and Enduring love one of my favourites (along with chesil beach) so I guess my favourite book!

Anyone who knows me would be somewhat shocked to find that I had never read the Hobbit. I started it when I was 12 and didn't like it much, so it wasn't until I was 20 that I finally picked up The Lord of the Rings, and then immediately became a huge Tolkien fan. I've read LOTR twice, and even have been creating an index of Tolkien's universe. I've also read The Silmarillion and have bought but not yet read The Unfinished Tales, Children of Hurin, and a large part of the Histories of Middle Earth. But still, it was only just now that I finally made it back to the Hobbit!
Though I didn't like it quite as much as the other tales, mainly because there were no Elves or Numenorians, and little grandeur, it definitely reads much easier. I finished it in one day pretty much (waking up at 4 am with a killer stomachache that lasted two hours after breaking Passover by eating half a pizza probably helped!) When I read the first line, "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit," I let out an embarassing squeal. There's something kind of nice about returning to a real story, and one you haven't read, in a universe you adore, when you're used to much longer and less plot-driven works.

Total Points: 435

Yes, I liked Ian McEwan enough to try another of his. No idea which one, I need to get to a bookshop! Quite like the look of A Child in Time...but no idea where it would fit any of the tasks I have left...
Would Atonement be ok for: "Read a book about a veteran OR someone serving in the military (fiction or non-fiction)."...????

Judith, this was probably the nicest review I've ever come across regarding Tolkien's writing. Even though you talk about specific books there is such a genuine and articulate review of your love for reading under the surface. And I'm glad you finally read The Hobbit!

I read: The Truth-Teller's Tale by Sharon Shinn AND Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I am not a fan of YA, so let me just say that these books were a surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed each one, and I give them nearly 4 stars. I did not realize that 'Uglies' was the first book in a series, though I'm not sure if the sequels are out yet...I definitely plan to read them when I can get them. Anyway, my new points total for the Challenge is 160.

Also, for the 50-point task, I don't think anyone mentioned Stephen King.. he also writes as Richard Bachman. Hope this helps someone.

7. Mother's Day: Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
I loved this. My boyfriend literally had to wrestle it away from me yesterday because I wouldn't put it down to go get ready for dinner with friends. :)
Points to Date: 180/575
Tasks Completed: 14/40

Heilbrun was an English professor at Columbia when she started writing her Kate Fansler mysteries. She wrote under the name of Amanda Cross to keep it a secret in order to protect her job. This was the 1960's and the world of academia looked down upon mystery writers and women professors as well. She also published books about literature from a feminist perspective under her real name. Some say her pseudonym Amanda Cross means "A Man to Cross" Heehee.
I may read her books for this task if I have time to fit it in.

10 pts. #3 - The Ranger's Apprentice: The Icebound Land by John Flanagan
15 pt. #4 - A Conventional Corpse by Joan Hess - set in Arkansas, did a spring break there twice, once in Hot Springs, once in Eureka Springs for the Passion Play.
50 pt task - Plum Spooky by Janet Evanovich and The Grand Finale by Steffie Hall ( This was totally coincidental for me as I read both of these in the last two weeks!)
prior total 175 plus 75 = 250 (Yeah! finally broke the 200 barrier!)

Heather & Stephanie -- You'll have to find "The Scapegoat" next -- another riveting DuMaurier book! As most of hers are...

I'm still mulling over the Bohjalian book, but I was disappointed. I had trouble all the way through with the whole Gatsby thing -- couldn't feel the story was REAL because of the attempt to make me believe the Gatsby story was real. And how did Laurel know so many behind the scenes aspects of the Buchanan/Gatsby story if it was supposed to be real? Then the twist at the end (although I figured out early on who the patient was in all those "psychiatrist's notes" sections) -- that just killed it for me. It felt like Bohjalian was trying to trick us through the whole book, and part of me wants to go back and find places where the whole "false reality" doesn't hold up.
The first book I read by him was The Midwife, which floored me. I was so moved by that book. This one... I don't know. I won't soon forget it, but I'm not sure the whole false reality idea worked either.
Anywho, here's my updated list:

Did you hear that loud boom? That was my TBR shelves collapsing under the weight of so many books (and I don't mind a bit)

This book is an easy to read history of the early years of Elizabeth I, with only the last few chapters written about her 45yr reign. It is written in an easy to read style, full of interpretation and not just containing facts. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will now be looking for more of Mr Starkey's books they differ so much from the dry history lessons I remember from school days.

Did you hear that loud boom? That was my TBR shelves collapsing under ..."
Hahaha ... I know! My bookshelves are straining, too! I keep telling my bf I need him to build me a new one - I've completely run out of room and have big stacks piled everywhere!
Tracy - Thanks for the tip on The Scapegoat - onto the list it goes! :)

Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I think that you have to have read one of those books since the 50 point task was named... I think that is what Cynthia decided for the 50 point task... one of the books could have been read before it was posted, but one had to have been started after it was announced

I read: The Truth-Teller's Tale by Sharon Shinn AND Uglies by Scott Westerfeld. I am not a fan of YA, so let me just say that these books were a surprise..."
I don't know if you have found them or not yet, but there are 4 books in the Uglies , Uglies, Pretties, and Specials are the three tht focus on Tally. Extras is the fourth, and it is a comanion novel. Tally is in it, but not the focus of the book. All four are out now. I am a big fan of the ! I am really glad that you liked Uglies! I hope you like the rest too!
Good luck!

That was my understanding as well; it was Cynthia's way of compromising so it was a more even playing field for everyone.

If the books had not been counted toward the challenge, it would seem reasonable to count them now. I think the big thing would be changing books from a lower point category to the 50-point. It seems to me that if you were spending time reading outside of the challenge, you were using up challenge time anyway.

I am now at 50 points. I can't really compete with most of you, but this challenge is fun anyway!

4. ROS’ TASK - Read a book that’s on the big reads list - Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
I love this series, and it was great to get into this one, again. It is actually the series that I thank for making my brother fonder of reading when he was a middle schooler.
25 points, making my total 325.

I am going to change my list a little and for:
10. March, April, and May are the 3rd, 4th, and 5th months of the year
- Read the third, fourth and fifth books of one series
Instead of more Harry Potter, I am going to read the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Shadow Children books: Among the Betrayed, Among the Barons, and Among the Brave by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
Saw this series today and I can't wait to read it.
