Suskind was born in March, so you could change Perfume to task 10.4 & use Shadow of the Wind for the translated book category.

Jon: Thank you for your task! When I first read it I thought...oh no...boring...but I am loving my book (Royal Affairs A Lusty Romp Through the Extramarital Adventures That Rocked the British Monarchy). I'm on Spring Break from school right now & haven't been able to put it down - I've read 1/2 the book in the last 2 days. It has also spurned me to do some research to find other books, plays, etc related to the royals that I've since added to my ever expanding TO-READ list. In hindsight I have no idea why I would have dreaded this task becaue I'm a huge fan of period piece films.
Thanks for opening me up to a new passion!
By the way - if anyone is looking for a 12 word title this may be the book for you. My only complaint - no pictures so I initially had a hard time placing people in time periods as dates just don't do it for me. Once I looked up the people online (great source of info: http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topi... - use the search box)
I could visualize & make connections with stories I was already familiar with via Hollywood.

Wow- I never even thought someone may be offended by something like that. I'm happy you're not too- especially since I wouldn't have even known! LOL
That said- I may be skipping that one! I'm going to try not to though and I do already have the book pulled out (and happened to have the book before I knew it would work for the task) and plan on doing them all also!
15 Points1. Astro Sign—Leo (royalty): The Queen's Fool A Novel by Philippa Gregory.
This was a fun book, it pulls you in and keeps you reading. This is the second Gregory book I've read and I really have to ask, did Queen Elizabeth kill Gregory's puppy or something? Because Gregory HATES Elizabeth. It came through in The Other Queen A Novel and it really comes through in this book. She portrays Elizabeth as a self-indulgent, whiny, bratty, selfish, scheming, manipulative, whore who enjoys nothing more than seducing another woman's husband just because she can. Is this really an accurate portrayal? Or is Gregory just really sympathetic to Queen Mary and thus turns Elizabeth into a villian? I understand humanizing/redeeming an unliked monarch (Mary) but she made Elizabeth so hateful that every time she appeared I wanted to slap her. My huge dislike for Elizabeth's portrayal eroded some of my enjoyment of the book. I think if I read The Virgin's Lover, where Elizabeth plays an even greater role, I'd choke on my own rage. I'll give that one a pass, but I'll still read Gregory's books that DON'T feature Elizabeth.

Rory, I read the book in less than a day and I gave it three stars. It kept my attention but nothing spectacular. There were a lot of phrases that were in it that made me think after I read them. I would like to see the movie though because I have a feeling that it would be better than the book.

1. Science Fiction: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? - I would have missed a phenomenal read but for your challenge task - thank you !
Bonnie - I think Philippa Gregory really does hate Elizabeth I. It's one reason I haven't read The Virgin's Lover. Also, her "history" is often not very accurate. (More accurate than "The Tudors," but not that that's saying much!)
The Gregory books I've liked best somehow do not feature Elizabeth Tudor in any significant way - The Boleyn Inheritance, and Virgin Earth, which is set in the 1600s.

Mine adds up page numbers, keeps track of book availability from the library, library due dates, adds points up for me (I don't trust my adding skills), etc., etc. It was really fun to program. A lot of it, I have to manually update, but I use it all the time (with the fiddling I do), so it's pretty effective for me.

Cookbooks are ok for our challenge? I should use that for my "out of genre" task since I hate to cook! =)
Oooh.. we should have a cookbook challenge... and have to try like 3 different recipes from it, or something. That would be fun.Anyway... I finished TWO MORE TASKS! Yay!!
Task 5.1 - SciFi/Fantasy: Undead and Unworthy by MaryJanice Davidson (4/9/09)
This book was not as light and fluffy as the previous 6 books. It was a lot more... not DARK, but dramatic, maybe. Loved it though.
Task 25.7 - Book seen in movie (The Pagemaster): The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (4/10/09)
This one was good. Not my favorite book of all time, but it was short and a classic, and I'm glad I read it. There was an underlying idea that everyone has a kind of dual personality--the good and the evil--that are in conflict and sort of warring with each other. It was interesting.

I haven't read it yet, but my understanding is it is sort of mystery/thriller (though the ex-bookstore employee in me would probably still shelve it in Literature and not a specific genre section).
