Liz M 7. DARLA'S TASK - Read a book you've either seen in a movie or heard referenced in a movie: Mrs. Dalloway read by one of the characters in The Hours (25 pts).

Ever since reading & watching The Hours, I've been meaning to pick up Mrs. Dalloway & am glad I did. It was an intense, absorbing book that I sort of dissolved into. Yet when done, I had a sense that I missed several layers of meaning. Definitely going to re-read someday when I can set aside time to focus on it more.

Tasks Completed: 8/39
Pages Read: 2990
Total: 150 pts.

You're not too late--you can start whenever you want. Also, if any of the books you've read since March 1st can fit into the categories, you can count them. You can set whatever goal for yourself you'd like--whether it's number of points or number of books. Or, if you just want to see how far you can get, that works, too! Welcome and have fun!

Finally ate the food for:

9. Color - When the Black Girl Sings by Bil Wright
Rice & Black Beans and Blackened Tofu in Tamari

When the Black Girl Sings is a wonderfully written story about Lahni, a black girl adopted by a white family who are facing divorce, and her upcoming singing competition. Bil Wright succeeds in his manner of writing. It is loose and familiar while his timeline focusses mainly on the weeks before and of the competition. Although he does not deeply develop his characters this is what helps make his book light and fun. He frequently mentions the issue of her race but does not focus in on it to the point of annoyance. Readers are able to glance at this point in Lahni's life and watch as she encounters new family, school, and personal disappointments, as well as, successes. This book best suits the younger end of the Young Adult genre. They will have no trouble handling its content and will certainly enjoy its plot.

15 points, making my total 180.

Tracy (iowadreamer) | 41 comments Finally finished another task/book...

For 15-point #6 (translated book), I read The Eye of the Leopard A Novel. It was my first experience with this author, and I've heard great things about his mystery series, so I'm looking forward to checking out some of his Kurt Wallender books. This one... I'm not sure how I'd rate it. I'm still absorbing it -- but I'm thinking it was only about two or three stars. The story alternates between present day (in Africa) and flashbacks to the main character's youth in Sweden, and the two people seem so vastly different, with no real explanation of WHY that is so... I found it hard to merge the two characters in my mind. And Hans (the main character) acknowledges throughout the book that he has remained in Africa for almost 20 years more or less by accident -- simply because he drifted into something and never works up the motivation to move on. The entire book felt much like that... just drifting from one scene to another, with little focus or direction.

I feel as if I have been wandering myself for the past week or so, struggling to finish this book between other responsibilities. I'm planning to read something a little more focused and pleasant for my next task! :)

Cyndee | 13 comments I've just finished The Woman in White by Wilke Collins for the 15 pt., #9 challenge, accompanied by a dinner of pork chops and mashed garlic potatoes.

Despite taking way longer to read than usual, this was a throughly enjoyable story. As far as mysteries go, it was quite predictable but still kept me fully engrossed through all 628 pages.

This brings my points total to 55

Allison, welcome to the challenge! However, for #2 in the 25 point tasks, you can not read fiction. If you want to read Lewis Carroll you will either need to find one of his diaries or choose a non-fiction book about him.

I just finished Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen for the Women's History Month task. This is one of those instances where I wish Goodreads would allow half stars since I'm wavering between three and four stars. I definitely liked it, but I wished that she wrote more about her interactions with the other patients because those were the chapters that I enjoyed the most. Even though the book dealt with a depressing subject matter, it had some wry humor mixed in.

So, I liked the book, but loved the movie so much more. Still, I have another non-fiction Susanna Kaysen book on my bookshelves (The Camera My Mother Gave Me) and am definitely going to check out some of her fictional works once the challenge is over.

Now, I'm up to 100 points!

6. Earth Day - The Earth, My Butt, And Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler

10 points, brining my total to 190.

Do not let the first few pages of this book lure you into thinking it is the run-of-the-mill fat girl learns to love herself book. Sure, the ending may be typical, but the rest is not. Carolyn Mackler throws in a twist like no other and allows readers to check their own emotions with those of Virginia, her main character. Mackler takes us into Virginia's sophomore year as she battles with the reality of her family, her friends, and of course her weight but also who she is. Each character is well written, the plot is developed, and the language and dialogue are real. Mackler has truly written herself a winner.

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I just finished !Pack Up Your Troubles by Ted Malone for my poetry book. I am so glad I read it! It was my Grandpa's favorite book, and I swear, he felt that all of life's questions and problems could be resolved with a poem from this book. Many of the poems were a little outdated (it was published in the 40s, and dealt with society then...) but, there were enough poems in there that I loved that it was totally worth reading. I would have loved it even if I hated every poem though, because of the connection to my Grandpa. Overall though, I was a fan, and I have lots of blue sticky notes marking my favorites! A lot of them I liked because they just remind me of him, (like The Cremation of Sam McGee...) but there are a lot of others that are very applicable to life. I am really happy/grateful for this challenge because I have been putting off reading this for a long time now, and it was good to finally read it! So, THANKS!!

That does bring my total to 230!

I thought it was quite good! It was interesting to read considering how much academic thought I have put into development and African history, a new perspective so to speak. Manday | 212 comments As mentioned, I need to make some changes to my reading list. It came to my attention that I had not followed the rules for 10.9, so I am moving Time Traveler's Wife to the rhyming challenge (15.7) to be paired with The Real Life of Sebastian King by Nabokov.

I also adding a book for 5.4 (trains, planes, and automobiles) - Secrets to Publishing and Marketing Your Book by Kristin Blizzard

The Time Traveler's Wife is such a good read! I kept sitting at work wondering what Henry and Clare were doing and wishing I were reading.

Thanks for making up this challenge I am loving taking part and reading books I wouldn't have looked at before and best of all really enjoying them :)

Josie (maid_marian) Just finished task 5.6 (for Arbor day, do you part to save the trees by...listening to an audio book), I listened to Absent in the Spring, by Mary Westamacott, which is actually the pen name Agatha Christie wrote romance and other non-mystery novels under.
New total: 155 points

YUMMY!! I can't find a book with color in the title!! Gonna have to scour the library!! (I mean, there are lots of titles, but I don't own any)

Susan | 100 comments 25.8 Read 2 YA books.

I read "That Summer" by Sarah Dessen and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets".

That puts me to 120.

Where the Red Fern Grows
The Red Badge of Courage
A Clockwork Orange
Anne of Green Gables
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Something Blue
Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood
Gathering Blue
The Color Purple
Princess in Pink
White Fang
Black Beauty

Type a color into the book search box here on goodreads and see what comes up. Don't forget colors like crimson, violet, lavendar, peach... shades of colors like those. Good luck at the library!

Your welcome and actually the total will be 575 - on April 15th (the midway point of the challenge) the person with the most points reported by noon EST that day will get to choose a 50 point task.

I stayed up to 2am this morning to finish Little Bitty Lies for the spring cleaning task - it was really good I just couldn't stop reading it - if you haven't read Mary Kay Andrews before she writes really fun stories that I highly recommend.

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments Question can anyone tell me what category Shadow in the Wind might fit into?

Thought I would try to fit in April's book club choice into this challenge.

Thanks

Lisa, isn't there a task for reading a book that was (past or present) one of the book club choices? You could read it for that, or maybe for the interview task if you could find an interview with the author.

Found it!... 15 point task = 3. Read a past OR present TNBBC group read that you haven’t read before.

Also, I wonder if Cynthia would allow "Wind" for a Spring weather word?

I'm using it as my translated book (it was translated from Spanish), but now you could also use it for the past/present group read book.

15.4 - if you've ever been to spain on spring break

15.6 - translation

are the two that come instantly to mind

Same here, Sharon - AND the extra bonus is reading everyone else's lists. I've started a list of books read and enjoyed by others in this challenge, especially those that show up on several lists. Maybe they'll come in handy for future challenges, and if not, it expands my reading choices. Thanks, all!!!
