Avory Faucette (avoryfaucette) Man, I'm going to have so much to catch up on...

Anyway, just hopping in quickly again from the airport to report finishing the horoscope challenge. I read Echo by Francesca Lia Block for 15 points (pisces, it has a mermaid theme) so I'm now at 90 points.

True Susanna. The problem for me is that I keep wondering if maybe it changed and became good so it is just better to finish the book so my mind can get on again.

Rory M. COMPLETED - 25 POINT TASK
#8 Cassie’s Task – Read two young adult novels.

Skeleton Creek by Patrick Carman (3/2/09 – 3/15/09)
I'm rating this 4 stars not based on the writing or story line but the ingenuity of incorporating passwords to view videos online. This is a book for the 21st century youth; it has what they love - technology & suspense.

_____
Remembering Raquel by Vivian Vande Velde (3/10 – 3/14) 4 STARS
** spoiler alert ** Raquel is a 14-year-old high school student who is your typical awkward teenage girl. Overweight & shy, Raquel spends her free time online in a fantasy world or drawing (she's passionate about animation). It isn't until she dies that those around her see her for the unique person she was. Remembering Raquel is a touching book that encourages each of us to take a long hard look at the people whose lives we touch and see what we are missing.

Elizabeth (Alaska) 5.7 Behind the Scenes at the Museum A Novel by Kate Atkinson

This was not the book I expected, as the other two Kate Atkinson's were mysteries, and I picked it up based on the author. Turns out this was her debut work, I was happy to learn, as I'm usually a fan of first novels. The book gets better as it progresses and I'll give it 4 stars, because her writing style is so fabulous, though it might be on the 4- side.

Did you like that Susan? I read that a few months ago and then almost right away read My Horizontal Life A Collection of One-Night Stands. I liked My.... a lot more than Are You There personally but they were my first time finding anything out about her. I had no idea she had her own show or any of that!

Jen (oshngirl) | 34 comments OK I'm game for this :) I think I just make my list of what I think I can read before the end of May and then come back and post updates? And I can add more books and or change what I post now right? Cause some of the categories I'm having trouble coming up with but I think a little wander around the library would help and I'm at the mercy of availability :)

25.2 A Midwife's Tale The Life of Martha Ballard, Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812
25.4 The Princess Diaries
25.5 Duma Key
25.9 The Mighty Queens of Freeville A Mother, a Daughter, and the People Who Raised Them
15.3 Water for Elephants
15.4 Underwater to Get Out of the Rain A Love Affair with the Sea
15.8 Just a Geek
10.3 Shallows
10.4 Jaws
10.8 Mash A Novel About Three Army Doctors
10.10 The Secret Life of Bees - user Krittle
5.5 The Silent Harp - 1935

There are a few more I want to do (25.8, 15.9, 5.5, 5.6, 5.7) but I need to do some looking to find them :)

I've already read The Secret Life of Bees and The Silent Harp - 1935 this month so sitting at 15 points.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Jennifer, you can add or change at any time. The only time you need to notify Cynthia (who runs this show) is when you've used a book for a certain task and want to change it to another task. That way she can adjust the points as necessary.

Welcome to the challenge! :)

message 2122: by Roseann (new)

Roseann | 400 comments Hi everyone!

I love that this is getting me reading like I used to! I ate up 4 1/2 books just this week!!! The new one to add to my total are:

25.9--SIN IN THE SECOND CITY:Madams, Ministers, Playboys and the Battle for America's Soul by Karen Abbot.

and

25.4--CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY by Roald Dahl.

Sin in the Second City was a very interesting book about Chicago at the turn of the last century and followed the Everleigh sister who ran what could have been called the most "respectable" bordello in the Red-Light District for they allowed no drinking (by their ladies), drugs (by anyone), or robbery(of customers)and also had regular doctor visits. Of course they were not liked by the more seedy houses on the street and were among the first to be closed by the ministers and evangelists. Not a book for everyone, but I found it interesting to peek into a part of life I would not ever see.

CHARLIE was a book I somehow missed reading as a child (actually all of Roald Dahl) and I have always said I'd get to his books sometime. The remake of the movie followed the story quite closely, but there were still a couple of new things. I also read the companion story "Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator" and will probably read some others as I like his slighly warped style. I want read some of his adult fiction also.

This additional 50 puts my total at 75 POINTS!

BJ Rose (bjrose) | 1489 comments Rory wrote: How did you like Death in Venice? I had to read that one for a Film & Literature course I took once. I hated both the book & the film -

Rory, I really, really did not like it. Mann had a great way of using language to describe people, places, and events (the cholera, for example) but that's the only positive thing I can say. Here's part of my review of it:
I know this is a classic and highly regarded, but I couldn't get past my dislike for Auschenbach. The author kept referring to him as 'the solitary traveler' as tho we should have pity for or empathy with him, but his demanding nature was so self-serving and uncaring of others that I couldn't really appreciate the message. It was supposed to be a tale of the search for spiritual fulfillment - if so, it was well-hidden from me.

Hope I haven't offended anyone who loved this book.

Meghan, what did you eat for white food?

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I read Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren for the Mother's Day task. This was one of my mom's favorite books growing up, and I have her really old copy that has been read to death, by many people. I was talking to her about it a few days ago, and decided to reread it for this challenge.
I still like the story, but I liked it a lot more when I was younger, because it is a very young story. I'm still glad that I own it (we went and bought them...) Great for kids! I like it!

Current total- 140!

Leora Stephenie-What did you think of "The Art of Racing in the Rain"? I am planning to read it for the same task. I read the first few pages of it on amazon and it looks good. I hope I don't cry all the way through it!

I'm currently reading Far From The Madding Crowd, what did you think of the audio version??

Steph Completed for 10 points:
5. March 24 is Harry Houdini’s Birthday – Read a book about magic, a magician etc.

Read The Little Country by Charles de Lint. Magic/mystery/philosophy/fantasy/fairy tale - not my typical style, but I loved it! There are two separate (ish) stories in this book - really a book within a book. This is definitely NOT for children.

I did like "Are You There Vodka...", but I wouldn't say I laughed out loud. I haven't read her other book, so I would hope it would be funnier. I do love her show though-she cracks me up!

Spinach and Rice salad and macaroni and cheese. Meatloaf was the main course.

Elizabeth (Alaska) I was just curious what the white stuff was. Seems like white food would be hard, but rice would do it. ;) (And vanilla ice cream, cream cheese on a bagel, milk, OK, maybe not so hard.)

Meghan (meghanly) | 218 comments No biggie - I just didn't know if I had to edit my post to allow my points to count. I also now realize I also had chocolate chip ice cream for dessert, which would also count as white.

Julie (ID) I was wondering if anyone was born in 1974. I had a book chosen for 10 pts # 5 but I understood the question wrong and I don't think my book counts. Now I can't even remember how I came up with the book I did.
Thanks!

message 2148: by Elizabeth (Alaska) (new)

Elizabeth (Alaska) Julie, all you need to do is find an author who won an award in 1974. Then you can read anything that author wrote to fulfill that task.

I didn't laugh out loud either and that was sort of my criteria because of how funny I heard she was. Horizontal was definitely more humorous in my opinion- much more actually.
