Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I spent my high school years in the reddest town, in the reddest state in America. None of my friends were drinking or dying either, but enough of it was there that I was exposed to it, and there is and was enough of it around that I still felt I could relate to what he was feeling, even though I never personally experienced any of that. (I think from earlier posts you have made, that you were sheltered in much the same way my town is...)

I do like the happy YA stuff, and I read it, and enjoy what I read, but I can only read so much at a time. Same with chick flicks. I like them if they are spaced out, but if I read too much, or see too many of them, I get annoyed with the chipper predictability of the storyline. Maybe that's why I liked this one so much. I just finished reading a really predictable, poorly written book, (which always makes me sad, like eating freezer burnt, nasty, stale ice cream...)and this one really surprised me.

Oh, and I really hope that my comment didn't come across in ANYWAY judgemental or offensive(about the YA chick lit...), because it was NOT intended to be at all. I have a friend that reads a ton too, and we both like to read those, and both tease each other each time we do. (and then listen to the rec, and go read the book...). I wasn't meaning at all that people should be ashamed to read it. I like it, and do admit it. What I meantioned earlier was me joking... Hard to tell in type, I know. So, I am very sorry if it was construed at all as mean or offensive!

Lori (batchelorxyz) | 158 comments I finally finished the second half of the 25.8 task. I read Revelations by Melissa de la Cruz and Fablehaven : The Rise of the Evening Star by Brandon Mull.

That puts my total at 75 points.

I know what you mean, but when I take a break from happy YA stuff (and romance novels), it's generally a TV break. The last TV break I was on, I watched Star Trek Voyager. And when I say that, I mean that I Netflixed all 7 seasons of Star Trek Voyager. I didn't really read for 2 or 3 months. It was hard to get back into reading, actually. Audiobooks and the Winter Challenge helped me.

I can feel myself slipping back into TV break mode. This time: Season 1 of Chuck. (It's SOOOOO GOOD!) We only have 5 or 6 episodes left though. TV break mode is NOT good for this challenge!!

No offense taken! Fluffy YA novels aren't exactly going to win major literary prizes... But I still love them for what they are: cheese. Mmmm.... cheese....

message 1954: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (affie) | 371 comments I'm glad. I know what you mean about the TV break, but I just can't do it often. My friends all tease me, because they watch tons of movies, and will quote them, and I'm always lost.

I've always prefered to read (even as a little kid...) and I've discovered that if I read a wide variety of books, I rarely need a break from it. Although, I can relate. The last TV binge I had was watching all 8 seasons of Charmed...

Chese is good. I agree, and I'm glad there is no offense! So, I would be interested... Do you have any favorite books that are not in the cheese type category? I got some of my favorite books (not YA cheese;)...) from a friend who reads mostly that genre, and would be interested in what else you would recommend...

Gotta run though... Late for class!
(Thanks in advance for any recommendations though!)

message 1955: by Sara ♥ (new)

Sara ♥ (saranicole) Haha... before Star Trek Voyager, it was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Great show.

Other than my cheesy books... I love Persuasion and Pride and Prejudice. Stardust was awesome (is that cheese?). I love all of Eoin Colfer (I wouldn't consider that cheese), especially Artemis Fowl and Airman. I really enjoyed Ender's Game and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (that's my sci-fi side). I just finished The Outsiders, which was quite good.

Looking at my books, I'm seeing mountains and mountains of cheddar covered in mozzerella, dipped in queso, and sprinkled with parmesan. ... ;)

Nicole | 155 comments I'm just glad to hear The Road gets interesting. I'm doing it on audio as well, and I went halfway through the first CD on the way to work this morning and was bored. I was hoping it got better because I wasn't sure I would be to pay attention all way through. And I usually like audio - you can yell at them when they do stupid things! :)

message 1957: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Harvey I still haven't finished Buffy. I've checked out the 7th (last) season from the library at least three times and have only gotten to the 2nd of 6 discs. I watch Netflix too, but tend to read more than I watch them. Of course, I watch sort splurges of anime instead of actual TV shows.

I do also need to frequently take breaks from reading when I've binged on books. Not too often, and usually only a few days...

I don't know that it gets BETTER... It's still REALLY depressing and pretty gross and disturbing, but it gets more interesting. I'm not going to fall asleep, like I thought I was going to for the first half of disc 1.

I love yelling at audiobooks. Like when something intense happens, I'll grip the steering wheel, shake it (or myself, I guess), and yell, "HOLY FREAKING COW!!!!!!!!" And no one thinks I'm insane, because no one can hear me... :)

Kristen - The series finale of Buffy was AWESOME! You have to finish it! As for Netflix... I think I need to cut back to 2 discs at a time until summer. 3 discs at a time during the school year is pretty crazy.

Did you have fun reading a book with a ridiculously long title? I wonder how people are liking my task....

message 1962: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Well, it was the book itself that sucked. I should have read 102 Minutes which was what I first planned on but a friend was wanting this so I figured I'd get two things done at once.
She didn't come off as honest one bit. The book seemed like it was written to take any and all blame ever heaped on her by anyone and shrug it off onto someone else, no matter who that someone else is.
I went into it with a really open mind too because I actually like Britney. This is just a mess though. I'm glad it didn't take longer than a day and a half to read it! LOL

message 1963: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Jon- I have a question. I just remembered two books I have tucked into a closet somewhere and if they both add up to 400 pages I want to know if they'd work. A friend of my grandmom's best friend (LOL_ sent them over from England and I've been meaning to get to them for forever.
They are- Diana, Her Life and Legacy
and
The Queen 50 Years - A Celebration
That would be cool if they would work. If not I'll have to try to find the other one you mentioned maybe, the one I asked about a little while ago.
Thanks Jon!

message 1964: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Jon- would Sex With a Queen and Sex With a King work for your challenge. Together they are around 700 pages and while they don't deal with only the British monarchy, they are in it a lot. For example Anne Boleyn, Catherine Howard, Camilla, Diane, etc are all in it. If not I understand. Thanks :)

message 1967: by Eva-Marie (new)

Eva-Marie Nevarez (evamarie3578) Nevermind- they won't work for that because even with both I'd still be short a few pages. I may as well just buy one or two that work for it instead of reading three.
They look pretty interesting though so I'll have to remember to get to them sometime.

Sara--You had me laughing so hard I almost fell out of my chair. The "I'm seeing mountains and mountains of cheddar covered in mozzerella, dipped in queso, and sprinkled with parmesan. ... ;)"

Backward Latin Shakespeare... Hahaha! That reminds me of Reverse Polish Notation.... Heehee! :) (Sorry--that was a math joke... errr... yeah... *WARNING: ENGINEER ON THE LOOSE!!*)

I love me some cheese. As long as they're good types of cheese. There are BAD cheesy books though, for sure. They're more like American melted with Velveeta, poured into some ugly Jello mold, and then allowed to congeal. Bad times.... very bad times... (Although.... If I got food poisoning, I could get time off work AND lose weight...) I hate American cheese. (As in the variety of cheese, not the country of origin.)

You could count Feathers as a YA read, or possibly a Christian fiction. You might need to clear that one with Cynthia, but I read it, and it talks enough about religion, I bet it could count. Check the birthday of the author too, I don't know for sure, but I think I remember seeing her name, or the name of someone at least similar to her on the list from March to April...
Hope you can count it for something!

Just finished a task:
7. Mother's Day: Skin Hunger by Kathleen Duey (the name Kathleen)

10 points, making my total 125.

Alternating chapters fluctuate between the story of Sadima, a farm girl whose family is opposed to magic, and the story of Hahp, a rich boy sent to a horrible school of wizards. This set up takes a few chapters to get used to, but it works out well. Neither story begs for more attention or outshines the other, and they are connected. Sadima possesses her own magic, and both characters interact with the same people, at different times. While Kathleen Duey balances them evenly, her endings are not. She pretty much has her stories just end. Her slight wrap up is not enough and requires direct continuation of her trilogy, which will be released this year. Overall, her book is an excellent start to the tale of the resurrecting of magic, and no doubt her trilogy will finish just as well as it started.
