I think the Lightbringer series is the best series I have read in fantasy in years.

Pedro | 4 comments I'm JUST started reading Nocturnal because I saw the interview with Scott Sigler on The Sword and Lazer show. I'm not very far into the book but so far it is very compelling.

It took me a few books to really fall in love with any of the characters. But there were enough really interesting characters by the end of this book to keep me interested. And there are some outstanding action moments that still stick in my mind. But it took me two thirds in to finally "get" the book. And I found the more books in the series I read, the better this first book became. I'd keep going back to refer to it as things develop. I'm going to enjoy re reading this one day.

Amy Pilkington | 104 comments It's been a loooong couple of months for me, so I'm only just getting back into the swing of reading regularly again. Naturally this means that I've started a bunch of stuff all at once, successfully overdoing it again. ^^

I'm reading both Wake of the Bloody Angel and The Map of Time on my Kindle, listening to Reamde in audio, and reading The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression in paper.

All this while struggling through what has turned out to be a difficult NaNoWriMo for me so far. My brain is not co-operating with me lately. lol

Kate O'Hanlon (kateohanlon) | 778 comments Our recent discussion of Women in YA made me want to give a chance to ya lady writers writing about girly things, so I'm reading Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan.
It's a ya gothic romance and utterly delightful so far.

Jo | 11 comments I'm reading Dodgerby Terry Pratchett and about to start Pandaemoniumby Ben Macallan - I loved his first book Desdaemona.

Sherry da Silva (smdasilva) | 15 comments I am reading Redshirts and listening to Losing Ground: American Social Policy, 1950-1980. Something light and something deep. I will probably move on to Soulless after I finish the Scalzi while I wait for the November pick to come in at the library.

On Stranger Tides is one of the best audiobooks I've listened to. Bronson Pinchot does an amazing job with the voices. It's something I'd highly recommend listening to rather than reading in print.

message 64: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7222 comments The plot is pretty intricate though. You really have to pay attention or a lot of scenes will seem unrelated. Heck a lot of characters go by multiple names.

I did the audiobook back in May. slow but enjoyable I thought.

I didn't have any trouble with it. I've read a few of Tim Powers' books in print and listened to this, Last Call, and Hide Me Among the Graves. I find he's much easier to understand in audio than in text. A good narrator who gives each character an individual voice really, really helps.

message 67: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments Oh, I also just finished listening to Existence. I've been a fan of David Brin for 17 years and have read all of his novels and one short story collection. It's been 10 years since Kiln People came out and I was so excited to see him releasing a new novel. Now, I hated Kiln People, but I had high hopes that this would be really good. I was very disappointed. I'll be posting a review tonight.

I'm going to lighten up by listening to The Woman Who Died a Lot by Jasper Fforde next.

Derek Knox (snokat) | 274 comments Finished Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Heading into long rural area, so going to have trouble streaming next book. Taking a break and listening to one of the 2 books I've been waiting for this month, Captain Vorpatril's Alliance by Lois McMaster Bujold. I like Ivan, but I'm going to miss Miles.

message 72: by Pedro (new)

Pedro António | 64 comments Currently halfway through The Shadow Rising and absolutely LOVING it :) I've been reading nonstop since the second half of the first book, can't believe I postponed reading WoT for so long!

Will be reading The Dirty Streets of Heaven for the book club once I'm done with Shadow Rising, quite intrigued by the crossover between fantasy and court scenes.

That'll probably be followed by The Fires of Heaven so I don't lose track of where everyone is or what's happened.

Should read The Curse of Chalion first. Paladin is a sequel. Not so much a direct sequel as furthering the story of one of the 2nd tier characters dealing with some of the aftermath of the conclusion of Curse.

I can't find a copy at bookstores, and it was hard to just get Paladin of Souls as getting her books from the local bookstore is the only way I would have enough time to read some of the book before next Sunday. Plus even if it is a copy I would have not bought it because its not in mass paperback anymore.

Autograph book. Plus lots of authors have begun bringing inserts or cover prints to sign for those that have upgraded their reading process.

Derek Knox (snokat) | 274 comments Finished Captain Vorpatril's Alliance. Great book, as all of hers are. Missed Miles, but Ivan is fun. Kept half expecting him to hook up with a certain mercenary fleet to save his new wife's family, but story took a different, funnier turn.

Still pretty rural and having trouble streaming the next Harry Potter book, so going to listen to Fourth Grave Beneath My Feet by Darynda Jones.

message 82: by Brandon (new)

Brandon (nodnarb518) | 4 comments Finished the Mistborn trilogy and I have to say I don't know how I feel about it. Enjoyed it for the most part, great world, awesome magic system but something didn't 100 percent click with me. But I did take a second chance on Sanderson as i'm currently reading the Emperors Soul

Aeryn98 | 176 comments I am reading The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson. Halfway through and I am finally getting into it.

I am also listening to I, Claudius. It's been a while since I had read it and it is just as good as an audiobook. These days though I can't help comparing Claudius to Tyrion Lannister

message 85: by Paul (new)

Paul Finished Red Country. Fantastic to see Joe Abercrombie back to his best after a couple of lukewarm efforts. Just started Boneshaker and enjoying it so far. The rest of the series sounds good so hoping that it lives up to expectations.

Leslie | 44 comments Have some reading time free so I have read, Enclave, I Wish I Had a Red Dress, My Life As a White Trash Zombie.

Onto Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain, Boneshaker, and Blindsight.

I should lem books more often.

I'm dreading finishing Red Country. It'll be no more Abercrombie after that. I've still to start Heroes on Audible so I've got a bit of time left.

Still in spotty reception area, but going to try to stream Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from my Amazon cloud library.

My review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

Will definitely be reading the next book Judas Unchained, but first I'm hitting Glen Cook's The Black Company which I'll never get to unless I just get to it.

message 91: by Sandi (new)

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments I finished listening to The Woman Who Died a Lot today. It's the first time I listened to a Thursday Next book instead of reading it on paper. I kind of missed the illustrations that Fford intersperses in the books, and I missed seeing Jack Schitte's name in print. However, the narrator was great. She treated the narration seriously and really brought Thursday to life. I didn't miss Book World and the various literary characters at all.

I'm now listening to The Dirty Streets of Heaven. I'm not sure about this one yet. The narrator is good though.

In text, I'm closing in on the end of The House of Velvet and Glass. I just finished The Age of Miracles. Not sure what's next in the text front. I've got some library books that are recent releases on my wishlist. I just don't know where to start.

My Review http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

Now listening to Abercrombie's The Heroes.

I've had a real good experience so far going between Steven Pacey and Michael Kramer as two very different style audio narrators. Both fantastic and absolutely right for the tone of the two very different Universes.

Linguana | 151 comments Thanks to the last S&L YouTube show, I picked up Robin Hobb's The Golden Fool again. I had been stuck at about two thirds and was still waiting for the plot to pick up. I know Hobb's books always start out slow and they are always worth reading in the end... this time, for some reason I got fed up and put it aside.

So last night, after watching Sword & Laster, I raced through a bunch of chapters and am - yet again - wondering what my problem was the first time around. Robin Hobb writes beautifully!

As I understand it more books in the series will come soon.

message 98: by D. H. (new)

D. H. | 100 comments I just finished reading Alif the Unseen. It is fantastic. The best book I've read this year. If you're like me and sitting out the next two months' book picks, I recommend reading this one. Thanks Tom and Veronica for the podcast interview with the author, which is how I heard about it. (Will this be a future pick? I'd be happy to read it again.)
