Kandice But if you get a Kindle in 7 months, you wont be able to buy any books for it! That can't be fun. Or will you buy paper books you already own and convert them to... whatever they're calleds? Files, or something.

message 52: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm hoping to be done with my ban by then, or at least really close to it.
I've read 21 books already, I have 27 left to read of the Spring Challenge, which should be done by June leaving me with 65, and then I have another 3 months until my b-day. And since I only have to read 84 before my ban is over, I think I can do it.

message 53: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Goooo Becky. When you get a Kindle will you keep reading real books or not?

message 54: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I think that I will buy new books on the Kindle, and keep the books that I have currently. Maybe I will put my favorites on it, so that I always have them with me, but I don't plan on buying all of the books that I have already again.

Carol (caroldias) I´m cheering for Blackwood Farm *anne rice fan*, Twilight, New Moon and Blue is for Nightmares (it´s on my TBR list)

\o/

You have a huge list o.o

message 58: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I will be reading Blue is for Nightmares sometime soon since it is one of my YA books for the Spring Challenge.

Twilight and New Moon are going to have to wait until I can get the rest of the series, which isn't going to be for a while.

Anne Rice though, hmmm... I haven't been able to finish a single one of her books. I was given Blackwood Farm my a friend, and only later did I realize that it was like #8 in a series. So that one might be a while!

My list is long, but I am working on whittling it down. I'm doing pretty well at it!

message 59: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I am so proud of you Becky! I need to be this organized about which of my books I'm going to read before I can willy nilly buy new books. I don't think it will be all of the books I own, because at the rate I'm able to read, it would take years.

message 60: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) That´s sad Becky, I love reading Anne Rice, it´s impossible to put down for me xD And no problem about Blackwood´s Farm being the #8, it´s pretty much a stand alone story so no problem about that ^^

message 61: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Hey Becky! I have a Kindle! I love it!!! I only wish that there was some way to find out what page you're on... I mean, other then going to a bookstore and looking at the chapter and the corresponding page number! I was thinking of making my personal challenge a certain number of pages (then I could count textbook reading, considering I am a university student and don't have a lot of time to read for pleasure). But then i realized that would be difficult since I have the Kindle. I should make a list for my books! I don't even have them all up here! Anyway, very admirable reading goal!

message 62: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Thanks Lori... I'm not normally organized like this! I just started feeling pretty guilty about buying 6 or 7 books at a time and then not reading them, so I made a goal for myself... I think that anything you do to read more of what you already have would be good though!

Carol, I WANT to like Anne Rice, but I'm not a big fan of her writing style (at least as far as what I've tried- and these were all several years ago, so I might be more receptive now: The Witching Hour, Lasher, Servant of the Bones, and Taltos). Her writing is descriptive to the point of distraction... I forget what is supposed to be happening because of how detailed she is in her descriptions! I will give her another chance one of these days though. I would like to read Interview with the Vampire.

Kathryn, I want a Kindle badly, but now I'm wondering about it. You can't tell the page numbers? How does that work? I know that it is supposed to keep your page for you, but what if you're trying to access a passage to reference something? You can't skip to the page you want? What about people who read the newspaper on it? Are they not able to skip to the different sections by page number?

Very weird. I might wait for a while if that's the case. Hmm...

message 63: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Hahaha got it Becky. Well, maybe you´re right she over describe things, and I usually don´t like books like that, but maybe I like her anyway because of what she is describing lol

Yes yes give her a change :D Since you read the Witching Hour series, the Blackwood Farm will be even better *cheering*

message 64: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I was the same about buying 6 or 7 in one swoop and the next week, I'd buy a few more and two weeks later...

I made a list of the books I need to read before I can buy. 106 books. It's going to take me a while, but I've owned some of these for going on 5 years (or, gulp, more) without reading them.

Thank you for inspiring me.

message 65: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) *blush* Awww! I'm glad I could help! I've never been an inspiration before... Thank you! :)

message 66: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) Hey. Well what I do is if I know some of the passage I look it up in the search and then it will bring it up and while it doesn't have page numbers it does have locations. And you can always go to the table of contents and skip to certain chapters. I really love my kindle and think that it is totally worth it!

message 67: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Oh, well that makes sense. I wish that there was a way to try one without actually committing and buying one. Thanks Kathryn!

message 70: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker Bloody hell! You must read really fast or you secretly do nothing but sit and read. Which is it?

message 71: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Umm.. a little of both. But I don't read nearly as fast as some people on here... I'm up to 25 books, but some people have already read twice that or more!

message 72: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I haven't even read 5 books. Maybe I've read 5.

message 73: by Liz (new)

Liz Becky, I like your reading goals, and it sounds like you're making good progress! But I'm noticing you've marked The Eyre Affair as part of a series, which series? I ask because I really want to read that one.

message 74: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Liz, it's part of the Thursday Next series by Jasper FForde. I own the first two books. Here's a link to my shelf showing the rest of the series: Thursday Next

message 80: by Lori (new)

Lori Walker I am sooooo jealous that you've read so much! Your mind must be so expanded.

message 81: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Haha! I guess so!

I have a nice middle-ground going... I read fast enough to finish 2-3 moderate sized books a week, but at a pace that I can enjoy and think about the book as I go along.

I think that people who can read more than a book a day either have super-brains or they enjoy the story while it lasts and then promptly forget it!

message 82: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I don't see The Screwtape Letters. Are you still reading it? Did you like it? Isn't/wasn't it clever?

message 83: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm still reading it... It's currently sitting on my desk at work and I read it on my breaks and lunches. But I have to be honest, I'm not really sure how I feel about it. It started out all cute and I thought it was going to be humorous, but now I'm a little bit farther into it and I feel like it is starting to take itself a bit too seriously for my tastes.

It is thought-provoking, but since I am not really religious, I'm probably not the target audience for this kind of book (but then again, maybe I am), its probably not provoking the kind of thoughts that Lewis intended, haha.

I should reserve judgement until I've read more of it though. I'm still less than 50 pages in, so I should give it a chance. Its just not grabbing me yet.

message 87: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I know! I'm just as surprised as you guys are! I have just been focusing on reading and getting them off the list.

I have some really long ones coming up though, so I don't think that I will be keeping up this pace for long. I just started "Roots", and then after that I have to read a classic for that challenge... Probably "Rebecca". I've been wanting to read that one for a while.

message 88: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I've read Roots at least 10 times. I really enjoyed it. Especially the way he writes their speech.

message 89: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Wow. 10 times? I hope I like it that much! :)

message 90: by Kandice (new)

Kandice But I first read it 25 years ago, and before Good Reads, I would read books over and over. I hope you love it.

message 91: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Becky, what did you think about Angela's ashes and Jonathan Strange? I am reading Angela's ashes now and don't find the beginning depressing.

message 92: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I didn't really care for Angela's Ashes, to be honest Jeane. The writing style was weird to me. Why not just use quotation marks if you're going to quote everything that everyone says anyway? But that's just a pet-peeve. The main thing that bothered me was it felt, to me, like the book was stereotyped and exaggerated. I didn't feel like it was an honest look at the authors childhood, it felt like he had padded it with misery for additional book sales. Pass it off as fiction, and I'd have no problem with that, but to claim it as a memoir and have that feeling remain, and I do.

JS&MN was good, but not one of the best books I've read. There was far too much build-up and not enough STORY.

Becky, I read Rebecca this December and almost wrote a paper on it for a class (I didn't because it would have been too similar to another paper i've written). I'd already watched the film for the same class, but nonetheless I thought it was a quick and enjoyable read, so I'll be eager to hear what you think of it.
