Task 11-15 planning and points
Here are tasks 11-15!
Reading starts on 1 March 2013!
11) Read a book about ghosts (last time I take requests guys :P)
12) Read a book in which the main character or his partner if the main character is male is pregnant or has a baby/small child (max. 2 years old)
13) Read a book in which gadgets play a major part
14) Read a book that features tea. Either in the title, prominently on the cover (not just a cup of tea on the cover if it could just as easily be a soda) or as the favourite drink of the main character or as something in the plot like the murder happens during tea time.
15) Read a book about a passionate love affair, sorry guys!
If you have doubts if a book will count, just ask in this thread.
The books of the series itself will only count for bonuspoints and can not be used for the tasks.
This thread is for planning your challenge and updating your points. Please post your progress in a new message stating the book you've read and the task you read it for and not just in your planning.
Reading for these 5 tasks will start on 1 March 2013 and the final day of reading will be on 30 April 2013. If you are more than halfway in a book you may finish it. However when this thread is closed you will be too late and the book will not count.
This thread will be closed again on 4 May 2013.
Tasks 16-20 will be announced on 24 April 2013 and that thread will be opened on that day.
Happy reading and good luck!

The only book on my TBR shelf approaching "passionate love affair" is Immortal Beloved. Can it work?
I've read that one, Claudia. I just checked and they do drink a lot of tea or meet over tea etc. They also use many gadgets, which is what I planned to use the sequel for.

Yay, thanks. :)

But a quick question about no. 2 can the character get pregnant within the course of the book or do they have to start out knocked up?
Sorry for not answering your questions yesterday, but I was awake during the whole BD sale and I needed to get some sleep. :)
@ Claudia and Varla Fiona: the book is set in Victorian England. Chances are they drink a lot of tea. Use it for that task. I guess the same can be said about the sequel so Varla Fiona you too use it for the tea task. You both can then use Etiquete and Espionage for the gadgets task. :) That book can't really be ued for any of the other tasks.
@Lauren F: Yes they can get pregnant in the book or deliver the child. They don't have to be pregnant during the whole book.

I am reading a book now that I need for the task about secret societies and they keep mentioning tea. So I could have used it for that task too, but I really need a secret society book so I will keep reading. :)

11. Book about Ghosts The Graveyard Book
12.pregnant or baby Nameless or The Twelve
13.Gadgets Etiquette and Espionage
14. Features tea in title or cover. The Tea RoseREAD
15. Passionate Love affair Jewels of the Sun or Voyager
Don't know what I am doing looking at these tasks. I still have to finish 3 for the other one...two books underway, so hopefully I can finish some of them.

Same here, except that I won't be finishing the remaining 3 tasks before the end of the month. And this set of tasks looks even harder! Really going to need that catch-up time...
Emma wrote: "Barbara when you say passionate love affair does that basically mean a romance book?"
No, it doesn't. I think most people wouldn't call Soulless a romance book. At least not at first, but the main characters do fall passionately in love.
There are lots of books in which the main characters have a passionate love affair but which at first aren't classified as romance books, but as fantasy, steampunk, mystery etc. For example the Jacqueline Carey books. I know that you don't like them, but each trilogy has two main characters that are passionately in love, but most people call them fantasy first.
Romance books for this task is the easy way out and yes you can read them if you want, but you don't have to.
@Lauren and Carolien: Sorry, I don't mean to make the challenge difficult. At least with the catch-up time you have loads of time to figure out what books to read. If you need any help finding books for this part of the challenge let me know.

I have a question about the pregnancy task - I'm reading a Marilyn Monroe Biography, and as some might know Marilyn gets pregnant but looses the baby at about 5-6 weeks. Would this count?
You picked up quickly that I said books and not novels this time.
The pregnancy doesn't have to be the main focus but it does have to play a major part. Unfortunately miscarriages or stillborns are still a real danger when you're pregnant so it would count. However it does have to play a significant part. So if she finds out that she is pregnant and looses the baby on the same page it wouldn't count. Is she consciously pregnant for some time? How does it relate to the rest of the book?

hehe :)
Not sure if it plays a significant part yet. I know there are theories that the miscarriage was a trigger to being even more depressed, but so far the book hasn't talked about it enough. There are some ways to go tho, so will see. I also got another book about her for review, maybe that one focuses more on it.
Thanks for the help!

Good question. If I look just at the title of the book I don't know. If it was a Dutch book I would say yes since here it is costumary to start your day (breakfast) with a cup of tea, but the book is set in the states and there it is costumary to start the day with a cup of coffee.
I am not familiar with the book or the movie. Is there a scene where she goes to a tearoom or does she drinks a cup of tea with her famous breakfast?
Is there anyone who can speak intelligently on this subject and help me out?

So youre probably right about the coffee part Barbara. I have never watched the Movie though so Im not sure if at a later stage she also drinks tea. Tea is a British thing and not an American one.But I dont know the cover looks like they could be drinking tea. Would have to find someone who has watched the movie I guess.
I had exactly the same problem - is it tea or coffee and expecting it to be coffee since it is NY. OK, have since discovered a beautiful cover with tea cups for The Age of Innocence so will use that I think (and at least it is on the tea list in listopia!).

Thanks Emma! I was afraid of that.
@ Carolien: The Age of Innocence does count. Yes it is also set in the US, but the time and society it is set in means that a lot of tea is being consumed.
@ Lauren: Great, so everybody read Inkarna!

Great. I started reading it a while ago, but got stuck after about 100 pages so may as well use this task to read the remaining 800 pages according to my iPad!

Tasks 11 and 15 requires books "about" something (ghosts, a passionate love affair). Did you just happen to choose this word, or must those things be the main subject of the book? I just finished Inkarna, which includes both a ghost and a passionate affair, but neither of these things are the main subject of the novel, although both play a large role.
And the pregnancy task: what if, for example, the main character has a baby that she gave up for adoption so it doesn't actually appear on the page? Or if she only falls pregnant at the end of the book but it's still a significant detail?
Update on the pregnancy question I previously asked.
So Marilyn got pregnant again, and then lost the baby again. This time she was so depressed she didn't work for a whole year. She also went for an operation, but was told that she could never have children. This seems to be the point where everything spiraled out of control for her. So far I think it would fit the challenge. But will read a bit more to be sure.

When in doubt always look to the series on which the tasks are based.
In the 5 books of the PPS ghosts are important but not one of them can be considered a main character. The only one that comes close is Formerly Lefoux but I think the most you can say about her is that she is a recuring character. Maybe (view spoiler) can be considered as a main character for a while but she only becomes a ghost at the end and isn't a ghost long enough because she is exorcised alomst immediately. The ghosts in the books are however a part of everyday life and can be encountered quite regularly and every now and then drop a major clue as to where investigations should lead. So the ghosts in the book you read for the task must be present and play a big part but it doesn't have to be the same ghost every time and they don't have to be the main character.
The same goes for pregnancy. Alexia is pregnant for 2 books of the 5. (view spoiler) She has a little child for 1 book (which is the other option in the task).
This means that she is pregnant for a considerable time in the series. So getting pregnant on the last page is not enough time being pregnant.
The pregnancy is very important to Alexia because she is (view spoiler) . So if the pregnancy in the book you read for the task has a major impact on the persons life than it would count.
For the first book in which Alexia is pregnant in the series she doesn't deliver the baby so if the baby doesn't make an appearance that doesn't matter as long as the character is pregnant for a while.
Did I answer all the question or did I leave one out.
@Lu: I do think your book fits the challenge because she is clearly pregnant and because the pregnancy and the miscarriage has a major impact on Marilyn's life.

Unfortunately, I haven't read any of the books yet, so I can't use them as a comparison :(
You missed the question about the love affair. Is that the same as with the ghosts though?
Thanks Barbara :)
I feel so sorry for her. She had a friend Pat Kennedy that had 4 children, and Marilyn just wanted 1. Things are really bad atm in the book :(

That's ok, I will just explain what happens and on what storyline an details the task is based and then you can make your own decision or you can tell me why you think something might fit and I can tell you why it does or doesn't.
Sorry. The love affair doesn't have to be the main focus of the book. So it doesn't have to be a romance novel. The love affair in the PPS isn't the main focus of the story. It is important though and it leads to other stuff. There is a lot of passion and breaking rules because they love each other and if they didn't love each other the story would definitely have been different. So if that is the case in your book then you can use it.
