Don't worry, Emma, you have two months to read these 5 tasks. I haven't had as much time to read either. For some reason I am very busy but I can't really pinpoint why.

Hi Barbara my book for the Tea Challenge has tea time in it A LOT but it is American Southern Sweet Tea (like ice tea) But its still tea. I have counted it but i just wanted to check with you that it is OK.

message 56: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I checked what exactly Sweet Tea is and you can use it. Yes it is iced tea but it is still tea. The English way of drinking your tea with equal parts tea and milk will also cool your tea considerably. Being iced doesn't change the nature of the tea.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Great thanks! I drink my tea both ways so I agree they are both still tea :)

I'd greatly appreciate it if possible. Didn't realise it was part of a trilogy, sounds even better.

Would The phantom of the Opera count for the ghost task?

message 69: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
No, because the ghost in the book isn't a real ghost, but a man pretending to be a ghost.

message 70: by Claudia (new)

Claudia (claudiavstoomanybooks) | 1779 comments Barbara, I wonder if this book will work for the tea task?
The Gathering Storm by Robert Jordan / Brandon Sanderson - There are loads of characters. The women seem to mostly prefer tea. Though the drink of choice in earlier books of the series was wine, it seems all the good wine stocks are depleted or went bad. Lately everyone serves their guests tea, or when they have a drink themselves it is usually tea. Everyone also complains how bad the tea is, but they drink it anyway. Then there is a rather funny ongoing storyline of one of the lead characters, how with being pregnant she is only allowed to drink weak tea and servants constantly bringing her this disgusting tea. She has a very small part in this book though.

message 71: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
It sounds as if tea is served more in your book than it was in the PPS so it would count!

I want opinions guys. I wouldn't consider If I Stay a book about ghosts. The main character has an extended out of body experience but I don't consider that a ghost. Maybe I am wrong, what do you think?

message 75: by Lu (new)

Lu | 12672 comments Mod
wow yea hard one! not sure

message 76: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I don't consider that a ghost either. Ghosts have no body to return to, and they are supernatural entities whose existence is unproven, whereas out-of-body experiences are documented.

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
I wasn't trying to make your life difficult, but I would never have thought to use this book for the ghost task. So I was just asking for opinions if other people would consider this a ghost or not. Sorry for the trouble and luckily you have another book you can use.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Hi sorry for the long absence, i haven't been feeling well or reading very much.
I've complete all the tasks except the Gadget one and I just wanted some clarification of exactly what was consider a gadget? Do cell phones and other electronics count or are they too run of the mill? Maybe some sort of kitchen utensil Lol!?

Barbara please help! :D

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
Haha I just googled gadgets and I came up with kitchen utensils and sex toys!! LMFAO!! That leave some very interesting reading options ;)

message 83: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I'm actually wondering too! I just read Doughnut by Tom Holt where bottles and doughnuts are used to travel in an out of alternative realities. A powder compact is also used as some kind of tiny computer. Would the novel count?

message 84: by Barbara (last edited Apr 01, 2013 09:21AM) (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
It's hard to explain what a gadget is, but it is something technologically advanced that is not readily available. So a lot of technology in steampunk novels are gadgets, things used in spy novels like camera's hidden in glasses and pens that are able to shoot bullits are gadgets.
Normal cell phones are not gadgets unless they can do something that other cell phones can't. I am not sure where the kitchen utensils and sex toys fit in. I am not sure what kind of feature you would add to a sex toy to make it a gadget and if you would then still feel comfortable using it. :/
I hope this helps you if not let me know which books you're thinking of reading and I'll let you know.

@Lauren S: The compact would definitely count as a gadget, that is exactly what is meant by gadgets.

message 85: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Would the bottles and doughnuts not count? They play a big role but the compact's role is rather small, and it's not a highly functional computer - it's really only used to display a user's manual, although it's designed to respond only to one person's DNA.

About kitchen utensils and sex toys - to me gadgets don't have to be technologically advanced, in the sense that they're a kind of computer or machine running on electricity or steam. It's their unusual, inventive and useful nature that makes them gadgets. For example, I once bought a little kitchen thingy used for making a single cup of filter coffee - you put filter coffee in the gadget and then put it into a cup of hot water, so that it functioned a bit like a reusable coffee teabag. It didn't need to be plugged in or anything, but I would consider it a gadget. It's not widely available or in common use, but it's a clever and convenient little invention.

Lauren (Sugar & Snark) | 1262 comments Mod
I agree I also don't think gadgets necessarily have to be high tech, I think they just need to be novel. But that is just my interpretation.

I started with saying it is hard to explain what a gadget is, but most people know when they hear or see something if it is a gadget. The dougnuts and bottles count too. The coffee maker is a gadget too.

I wouldn't consider everything that is novel as a gadget, but often something that is a novelty is a gadget.

I am not sure if we are making things clearer.

message 89: by Lauren (last edited Apr 02, 2013 12:19AM) (new)

Lauren Smith Yes, it's a bit difficult, like the silly accessory in the last challenge :)

I'd agree that it's not only novel things. I wouldn't consider an unusual decoration or a weird book to be a gadget, for example; it has to be designed for a practical purpose.

Thanks for accepting the bottles and doughnuts! I was unsure about those, as I can't quite see them as gadgets myself, even though they have gadgety functions.

message 90: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith I've read Doughnut by Tom Holt for task 3: 3/5

I have to say, I didn't think I'd get this far with this part of the challenge, and certainly not this quickly!

I am really struggling, which is very funny, because I made up the tasks and I selected these tasks for this period. You would think I would be smarter and make it easy on myself, but apparently I am not. :)

message 93: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Lol :) Perhaps it's because, having read the series, you started out with specific ideas of what you meant, and now the rest of us are bringing in all these tangles and looopholes.

message 94: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
No, it's more that I just don't have the right books for the tasks i selected. You would think I had a lot of time to search for thme, but I just didn't lok and now I am in trouble.

message 95: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, no, sorry, I thought you meant you were struggling because of all of us constantly asking questions about what counts, and how you could have made it easier on yourself by putting in strict definitions from the start :)

Not having the right books - I guess now you know how the rest of us feel, lol. Although eBooks tend to make things easier.

message 96: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 4434 comments Mod
Oh no, I like you guys asking wuestions and looking for loopholes. It makes me feel less guilty when I do it with other challenges. So please keep on "pestering" me with questions.

I am really struggling with the tea one. Even though I have known for months that task was going to come up somewhere in the challenge but somehow I didn't start looking untill the tasks for this period were announced. It is honest of me but also not very smart. ;)

message 97: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Smith Oh, it's good to know that you like the questions. I feel less guilty about asking so many :)

I had a few I could have read for the tea task, but I was lucky to stumble across a book by chance. Ditto the love affair.
