Have you read Marchetta's Lumatere Chronicles? She's masterful in her craft. That, for me, has been one of my all-time favorite fantasy trilogies. Bar none.

I definitely have. And to this day, it remains one of the greatest and best written series I've ever read. It's funny you should mention it because given the chance, I always recommend it to EVERYONE who loves a good fantasy story. :)

Right? I think I've read the trilogy 3 times. I'm working through Marie Lu's Legend series & Steifgater Raven's. (I think I'm behind a few years). Are you much into historical fiction? (The Maid of Deception series are a totally fun read).

I'm really liking it, it's a really cool concept. The first half is the history of this fictional mad scientist who believed creatures of myth were part of evolution. The last half is all of "his" notes and drawings about the creatures. There's full illustrations of the skeletons and muscles and stuff, it's macabre but pretty cool.

Sounds interesting. Do these creatures ever materialize?

Materialize how? It's written in a textbook format so it's more observations/fake science than an actual plot or story :)
