Bill Winners

Blood Land by R.S. Guthrie
Red Dragon by Thomas Harris.

General rules for Group Reads

1) If your nomination wins - you will be the discussion moderator.

2) One (1) nomination only per person. Neither self-nominations by authors nore nominations by there respective publishers or publicist will be accepted.

3) Do not cheat or manipulate results. It is not acceptable to create fake accounts to nominate books or vote in polls and it is not acceptable to invite people to the site for the sole purpose of nominating a book or voting for a book in a poll. It is not acceptable to ask for votes or influence the poll in any way. If the moderators feel that a group read poll has been manipulated, the book in question will be disqualified. If the moderators feel that the user(s) are fake accounts, these will be reported to Goodreads for further review.

4) Please do not repeat an author we have read in the last year. Check the bookshelves to see the authors we've read in the past year. http://www.goodreads.com/group/booksh...

5) For your nomination please include Title, Author and Link (Use the "add book/author" link at the top of the comment box).

Since we are an international group, please check to make sure the book is readily available in more than one format. the last thing we want is to nominate a book that no one can get.

Finally, a word about series - the joy or bane of a mystery reader's life! Please consider whether the book you are nominating would be best read by someone who has read all the previous books in the series or can be enjoyed by someone new to the series too.

Nominations will run from 28 Sep to 7 Oct. The poll will run from 8 - 12 Oct. Good luck with your nominations.

I read the first two. It is like a train wreck that you can't stop watching. I like the books but am disgusted at the same time if that makes sense.

message 15: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) It makes sense to me. I think it is the dependency that Archie has on Gretchen that bothers me the most.

Kate Kinsey | 5 comments I suppose nominating your own book would be bad manners, lol. So I'll just wait and see what you all come up with. :)

message 19: by Becky (new)

Becky | 18 comments I love the Chelsea Cain series. I think the dependence he has on her is part of the "charm" of the books. I'm warped though LOL

message 20: by Bill (new)

Bill Thanks for the nominations so far. Just a few notes; a couple of the books are only available in ebook format so wouldn't be available to all the readers. Also if you are seconding a book, plse make it clear to me (due to my old brain) that you are doing so. :0) Finally, in response to your question, Kate, check the first post re nominating your own books. Thanks all for your nominations. Looking forward to seeing what else gets nominated this week.

Catherine (catjackson) I suppose I was one of the ones who wasn't clear in a seconding. I second The Virgin of Small Plains.

message 26: by Ruth (new)

Ruth Donald (redonald) | 64 comments It's one of a series, but an early one. How about The Vig by John Lescroart? He's one of my favorite crime writers.

The Vig

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments Kill You Twice? That's number 5 in the series, I haven't even started those books yet and looking at the synopsis you probably do need to have read the previous books.

Thanks, Catherine. Much appreciated. :0)

M. Myers (mruth) | 100 comments I second Bootlegger's Daughter by Margaret Maron. It's a fine mystery with richly developed characters & sense of place. I'd welcome reading it again.

message 30: by Kitty (new)

Kitty I also second The Virgin Of Small Plains.

message 31: by Sheila (new)

Sheila (sheilaj) @Charlotte re:the Chelsea Cain books. I would say that yes definitely they should be read in order. However they should certainly be READ. I'm a big Chelsea Cain fan.

message 32: by Bill (new)

Bill Gary wrote: "Kill You Twiceby Chelsea Cain"

Would it make more sense maybe to read the first book in the series, Gary, to introduce more people to Chelsea Cain?

Charlotte (Buried in Books) | 407 comments Sheila wrote: "@Charlotte re:the Chelsea Cain books. I would say that yes definitely they should be read in order. However they should certainly be READ. I'm a big Chelsea Cain fan."

I think I have the first book in the series somewhere, just haven't got round to it and I CAN'T read things out of order!!!

message 34: by Gail (new)

Gail Gentry (gailgentry) | 17 comments I'd like to nominate Blood Land by R.S. Guthrie. I've read this book and even if it doesn't win the nomination, plan to read it again. It has many twists and turns leading to an ending that totally catches you off-guard. The book has been so well-received that the author has decided to make it into a series. Since Blood Land will be the first in what will be a long-running series, I think it would be great if the members could read it now where it will all start.

I agree starting at #1 would be the best idea. I have read the first 4 in the series but if the group reule ony permeit one book per author per year it will take us about 5 years to get top this one. I'll change my nomination to Heartsickby Chelsea Cain if it pleases the group

Thanks, Gary. Makes sense. And if it's chosen and gets people interested in Chelsea Cain, it's also accomplished that.

message 40: by Bill (new)

Bill I nominate the first Travis McGee mystery by John D. MacDonald, Deep Blue Good By. I've never read any of his novels, but MacDonald was subject of a thread in September and it tweaked my interest.

Mark (marklberry) | 1 comments I'd like to second the commercial aviation thriller "Captain" by Thomas Block mentioned by Dawn in message 7 above. I'm a career airline pilot and Retired Captain Thomas Block weaves a wild ride while maintaining aviation realism lost in so many other authors' stories.

Yes but naturally better to have read Deadly Straights. But reads on its own. Bob was good about that. Forgive my not including that note.

Cheers,

Bill

message 49: by Bill (new)

Bill I hate to ask, but is it only available as an e-book? Makes it difficult for some folks to have access.

message 50: by Bill (new)

Bill Koller (playamaya) Again my apologizes, I'm busier than a one armed paper hanger in a Jersey swamp with roof repairs.

Both McDermott books available Paper or ebook Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

I am teachable. Ultimately.
