I was thinking about doing the same thing with my MC today! I hope it helps. And I gave a supernatural power to the other MC to juice things up.

It's not easy being a newbie lol

Me too re getting sentences down. I think the circles may start today, lol.

message 203: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) lol! Yay!

message 204: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) I just sent a character to Timbuktu. I have no idea what he does there, but I guess I'll find out.

message 205: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) That could be fun, get someone to rescue him!

Wait, which one has so much salt in it that you can't sink?

message 206: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) My main character is already on her way. He was kidnapped, BTW.
Well, I didn't really send him to Timbuktu. But my prota needed an excuse for him, because nobody can know that he was kidnapped (kind of complicated) and told her mother in panic that her stepfather has gone to Timbuktu.
Well, thank you. Now I have to come up with a reason for him being there! Not easy.

And that would be the dead sea.
And you really can't swim?!

message 207: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) Indeed it is.
At the moment nobody would want to go there. But luckily my story takes place in 2009 and it wasn't as bad over there back then.
It's still not a place a principal has a good reason to go to.

Wow! Bold move...I've been avoiding that move...instead I came up with a gambling addiction :)

one of my friend is doing short stories as well, i think a short story collection sounds like fun to do for nanowrimo, I might do it next year or something. best of luck to you!

Umm.. question, what do people mean by winning? and do you have to finish the draft or the draft and all the editing in this November?

message 211: by Laura (new)

Laura (lbrimer) Winning means you reach the 50K by the 30th. It's just a first draft so it doesn't have to be (and probably won't be) publishable by the 30th.

message 212: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) God, no!
Winning means reaching the 50k. But you can just as easily stay at 20k or whatever. You don't get a prize or anything, just the knowledge that you did something really amazing this month!
You don't have to finish the draft and there is no editing in November. Just writing. Usually you can just do one of the two things and that would be the first, because you want to reach your goal of 50k.
Editing is for December. Or, even better, a few months later, when you've got a bit distance from your text.

message 213: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Is this a good way to write a book, even for a professional? I mean, the idea is to edit as little as possible when writing the first draft, right?

So even if our books from this NaNo don't get published, at least we're establishing good habits for the future, is what I'm thinking.

message 214: by [deleted user] (new)

I like it because it really pushes you to get down and write. better yet get done.but sadly I'm a bit behind, because I started on the 2nd. and besides when you don't edit it leaves the draft what its suppose to be, raw and straight from you mind! :P any way anyone got advise on catching up?

message 215: by Jacquel (new)

Jacquel (clairevioletthorpe) try to set aside at least one hour each day for writing.

message 216: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Turn off the Internet. Go to a quiet room and close the door. Use earplugs if there's noise around you. Turn off or disconnect any phones in the room and really focus on writing.

It's amazing how productive we can be when we focus. That's what I've found.

message 217: by [deleted user] (new)

ok just gotta do it! ok... even if it sounds like a two year old wrote it?... ok never mind just write... make a playlist then write.

message 218: by Vintage Lady (new)

Vintage Lady Well I am behind but still going. I have 5,227 words. I have been sick the last few days but I hope to be able to catch up. It seems my characters are taking on a life of their own. It is interesting to see the direction my story is going in.

message 219: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I think when they do their own thing, that's a sign you're doing something right! At least I hope so, since it happened with one of mine also. Good luck!

message 220: by [deleted user] (new)

that's good! Sadly though, my character's don't really have that much.. well character. People say that you have to live what you MC is living but idk really how to connect like that yet. In my head its like that but when I write it, its just seems unconnected and detached. I'm also stuck, I know what to write but at the same time I don't! it's horrible. because I've written before and I've felt really close to the characters. but now i'm stressing about the plot and how the societies should be and all the tiny details I have to add or certain things wont make sense...... Arghhhhhhhhh!!! I need advice on ways to relax and clear my mind... anyone?

Honestly, and I know this sounds nuts considering, but walk away from it for a day. Maybe even 2. I had to do that today because I was getting bogged down in the minutiae. My subconscious has been thinking about it though, so ill be able to look at it tomorrow with fresh eyes. Hang in there!

Maybe say your story out loud to a recorder or something like that and then go type it? Maybe saying out loud will help.

message 223: by [deleted user] (new)

thanks you guys!

message 224: by G (new)

G (g1enna) Gosh I leave for a couple of days and I see sooo much good advice :) plus some outstanding results!!

I am lagging behind a bit. Good news I am writing a bit everyday! Sad news I am just over 5,500 words.

I am not being to hard on myself this is the first time I've attempted to write so many words in a month! Anything I get done will be awesome.

Thanks for all of the encouragement and all of the leading by example!

message 227: by Kali (new)

Kali | 1 comments First year of doing NaNo and just hit 15,500 words! I'm working on an urban fantasy. Feel free to check out my synopsis and excerpt: http://www.nanowrimo.org/en/novels/th...

message 228: by G (new)

G (g1enna) Wow, I sort of feel like an underdog when I see other peoples word count...I just broke 7K.

Upside...I'm writing everyday :D

message 230: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) 50k
But still not finished. I won't write as much as the last week anymore, but I'll still have to write.

message 231: by Jackie (new)

Jackie | 7 comments I've just reached 25,000. Stayed up too late with work tomorrow. I'm really pleased with the progress, even though I know it's not going to be anywhere near finished at 50,000.

What is brilliant about this is that it has given me the kick I needed to get on and write this story.

message 232: by G (new)

G (g1enna) Good to know I'm not the only slower writer!! I've broken 9K barely, and I'm pretty sure what I've written is crap, but I'm going to keep going anyway.

I encourage everyone to do the same!

message 233: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 3 comments Just broke 12k so I am behind, but I am so proud of myself thus far. I have been procrasting by a) spending too much time coming up with a title and b) picking, downloadng, and burning a soundtrack for my novel. So it is time to really start working now.

message 234: by Chani (new)

Chani (tempestchani) | 6 comments I'm at 40,000 words...but I hate half of it. Sigh. Editing once this is all over is going to be loads of fun. Not. ;)

message 235: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) I know how you feel. I already dread the editing of my NaNo novel...

message 236: by Lynxie (new)

Lynxie Everyone loves editing!! I do!

*rolls eyes*

I am having a lot of difficulty turning off my inner editor while doing NaNo, which is why I'm running behind with the word count. I just need to let it go and write whatever comes out, UNEDITED! Then get all nasty with the editing red pen after November!

Happy writing guys!

message 237: by [deleted user] (last edited Nov 13, 2012 07:17PM) (new)

I suck so much :( I missed the start of NaNoWriMo by 12 days. Do you still think I could accomplish something in the 18 days that are left? Yes, this is my first year doing it.

message 238: by Lynxie (new)

Lynxie Of course Aditya, writing for the next 18 days is still fantastic :) Give it a go. You never know what might spring forth from your mind when you allow it to just write each day :D

Happy writing!

Yes Aditya do it!! Even if you don't quite make the 50,000 (which you should still aim for, anyway), you'll probably end up writing more than you would have without NaNo!

My friend wrote her 50K in about a week last year so anything is possible!!

message 240: by Laura (new)

Laura (lbrimer) Losing steam like whoa with my story guys! GAHHH!

message 241: by G (new)

G (g1enna) Aditya just jump in! I'm a first year'r too and I am far below in word count (11K) but I'm not letting that stop me.

Come join me :D

message 242: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) It's my second NaNo and I've done the 50k in 10 days. So it is possible. And even you don't have enough time, it's just so much fun; it's definitely worth trying! :D
