mussolet (sovotchka) I have spent the last two years without outline or plot, and with too much prior engagements.
So I am extremely excited this year, when I actually have planned ahead. And it's more than two weeks to go as well!

Emily E (emily_e1) | 20 comments I woke up yesterday morning with the memory of a dream which has become the seed for my NaNo story. I am not going to plan just daydream until November 1st :)

This years is a sequel so I am hoping that will give a headstart. Your story idea sounded great though Hayley!

Rachel Willis | 5 comments This is my first year with a solid plan for a novel for NaNo! I can't wait for November 1st!

What do you mean it doesn't want to be written??

Yes, it 'sounded' great... ;) =P (just teasing Hayley!)

I'm debating on whether or not I want to outline my novel this year. I have this vague idea that's pulling in two different directions. One approach to the idea is easier than the other, but the other seems more true to my writing and the goals I set for myself. I'm just stuck at the "what happens next?" part of outlining which is always discouraging. I find that reading other novels does help my creative side keep stimulated and producing thoughts that hopefully transfer into new novel ideas. Anyone else worried about their plot? How do you stay sane?

message 58: by Hannah (new)

Hannah Cp (ficem) Courtney-Lou wrote: "How do you stay sane? "

Entirely sane? I don't think I ever was to begin with...

message 59: by Cameron (new)

Cameron Lawton | 13 comments I wish my sodding characters would get themselves sorted out - I had a plot completely drawn up for the NaNo and out of the blue, another one I was saving for later muscled in, got a publisher's interest and insisted that it take first place .... back to the drawing board!

message 60: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) I'll be writing the fifth (and last) volume of a series I started a few years ago. The problem about that is that I have the plot completely planned out. For NaNoWriMo that might not be the best thing, because a big part of writing fast is your fantasy. Whenever you're stuck, you can just throw in something unexpected and there you go again. But this time I can't do that as it has to fit the other volumes of the series.
That's why I'm so nervous right now. I don't know if it will work until I try it.
Haha, some of you have problems because they don't have a plot and I have a problem because I have too much of a plot. If that isn't ironic...

message 61: by Laura (last edited Oct 18, 2012 01:02PM) (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Either way it can kill the book, I think. Too much or not enough. Writing is a pretty hard thing for something that pays so little. Good thing we enjoy it. Most of the time. lol.

message 62: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) You're right there. If you don't enjoy writing, the results will show it.
And yes, most of the time. ;)
I hope our books survive.

message 63: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I hope so, too.

message 64: by E.J. (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 60 comments Hello, I will be writing one of two books:
One about a girl in a world I am creating... (too weird to put in words at moment) but she has no known "powers" like the rest of her world, which gives her the title of the people like her: Rogues.

OR

One about a girl who sees monsters in reflections... she wears glasses so she is constantly seeing these creatures lurking in corners.

Tamm Frederick (tammtamm) | 2 comments I will begin outlining later today... I have known what kind of story I have wanted to write for weeks now so doing the prep work is gonna be awesome!

message 66: by Carolyn (new)

Carolyn (carly1967) | 15 comments I've heard about NaNo, but this is the first year that I've seriously looked into it and decided I'm gonna go for it. I have a story that has played in my mind for years - now's the time to get it down on paper and stop dreaming about it.
I've been getting my writing juices flowing again with doing "Morning Pages" and rereading an old favourite - Natalie Goldberg's Writing Down the Bones.

I've got a plan, though had to change it, as I got a new idea I'm adding to the mix. (another 1st. Planning)

Btw, hi there.
I mostly write fantasy stuff and only mere minutes ago got an idea on how to get some action into my plot. Took me long enough. Now I'm veeery excited about this - but I still need to plot some more. /:
I want to write 200k again - which means more of everything.

message 77: by Sannie (new)

Sannie Hald (sanniehald) Is one allowed to go the easy way during NaNoWriMo and do a collection of Short Stories??

message 78: by Emily (new)

Emily E (emily_e1) | 20 comments I can't believe NaNo is so close! I admit I am not feeling quite prepared this year. I have the seed of my story idea but not much of my storyline and only my main character...

message 79: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) Sannie wrote: "Is one allowed to go the easy way during NaNoWriMo and do a collection of Short Stories??"

If they are connected a bit, you can write short stories. The "rules" are under the thread "Are you a NaNo rebel" or something the like. If the short stories are not connected at all, you are officially a NaNo rebel. But even if you are, it's not bad. You'd be in good company, because this year I'm a rebel too. ;)

message 80: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I may be a rebel too. 50K words in one month is enough. I'd like them all to be connected, but if not, so be it.

message 81: by Kaje (last edited Oct 25, 2012 02:33PM) (new)

Kaje Harper | 7 comments I'm in unless real life gets crazy - don't know which WIP I'll work on. I have several that could be finished off with about 50K. I am not starting a new book this year.

message 82: by Marlene (new)

Marlene (marlene1001) I'm a rebel because I write on a story I started a few months ago. It has been lying around and I want to finish it now. It's the last volume to a series and I really, really want to see the the words "the end" under there.
But I will only validate the words I write during NaNo. And that will be easily over 50,000, if I really finish the novel.

message 83: by Tamm Frederick (new)

Tamm Frederick (tammtamm) | 2 comments I am so ready for NaNo... I can't wait for Nov. 1st.

message 84: by Clifford (new)

Clifford Wollum (bingocliff) | 3 comments I must agree that there's something about NaNoWriMo. I look forward to it every year since 2004, and twice I have reached 50,000 words in 30 days and completed the works in progress. I've failed on 4 other novels that are not completed. All 6 works in progress are being attacked on a monthly basis. They are always on my mind when meditating (daydreaming). My first love is reading and I do same on a daily basis.

message 85: by Kayden (new)

Kayden Lee (kaydenlee) | 3 comments Best of luck to everyone, hope you come up with some great stuff this year!

We rebels got to stick together! :D

message 87: by Cameron (new)

Cameron Lawton | 13 comments I am going to end up probably cheating and writing two half novels in a month which won't get me a winner sticker but will satisfy my publishers a bit more ... sold my soul for rock and roll!

REBELS FOREVER!

No, I'll try to be a "regular" participant next year. I'd even have a new story for this years NaNo, but I want to finish the other one...
Argh, I'm torn. I guess I will see which one I really start when I start. It depends.
But I can be very determined, so I hope I'll stick to the first one.

message 90: by Vintage Lady (new)

Vintage Lady Is it ok to just start writing on the 1st of November and do some research along the way? My book is going to include some history from orphan trains. I did some reading on them in the past but haven't lately. I need to do some more reading.

message 91: by Vintage Lady (new)

Vintage Lady Also if we start and don't like where it is going can we start over or do we have to continue with what we have?

message 92: by Kris (new)

Kris Research is all right, just be careful you don't spend to much time with it. A lot of people I know will write a note saying "Do research on blah blah for here"

You can start over, I did it 3 years ago, ripped out half and wrote furiously. The beauty of it is you can count the stuff you ripped out because you wrote it in November.

Carlee Jane (chycebelle) Can't believe I'm really doing this with all I have going on, but here I am fleshing out characters and plot! I'm excited about my story, so that's a good place to start I suppose. I do have a question though: any tips on making a pessimistic protagonist likable??

uuummm, if you upload 50,000, i'm sure you will still win...does not matter if it is two short novels, just that you do 50,000 words in 30 days...
