And I managed to finish my book! Yay!!!
REVIEW:
This Side of the Grave by Jeanine Frost.
Finished: 21/9/12
Stars: 5
Jeanine Frost is a master writer. Cat continues to develop as a character, not just because she is now a true vampire instead of a dhamphir. The interaction between the characters is truly entertaining (who could not ROFL at Vlad's "premature inflammation" remark). We see Cat's soft side with the developments in her relationship with her uncle, Don. I can't wait to read MORE!!!

So, a little birdie tweeted me about waiting for pics, so, am taking a break from both my reading projects and hopefully not boring you to tears in the process!
Background...I think astronomy is cool, but it has been a passive thing for me, until this year. My team has taken on projects for the NAOJ (National Astronomical Observatory of Japan) so I've been brushing up on my scientific knowledge and vocab in two languages. That leads me to lots of cool sites, cool pictures and interesting facts. (That initial project also was during a bingo round...in fact.) So, here are some solar, extraterrestrial etc treats for you...on a day when the Endeavour (sp?) is making it's way to its retirement home...
First, your daily sun (cloudy or not!): (updated every day)
Nobeyama Radioheliograph Image

Now, this is actually an "older" project...a quick visit to the solar eclipse this year, and then on to something that's going to be giving us cool images and data for some time to come.
On May 21, there was a very cool annular solar eclipse in the Northern Hemisphere. Got some very cool photos through the clouds myself, but also had a laugh at the kanji (chinese characters) for it.

食の始まり (Literally, before eating)

金環日食 (Kin-kan-ni-shoku, and "shoku" means "eat")

食の終わり (And, you guessed it, after eating)...I wonder if the moon had a stomachache the next day?

Judithe that was interesting! Thank you for sharing! I believ I like the Moon after Eating best. LOL That looks so pretty!

The project is located in the Atacama Desert, Chile.

It's scheduled to be finished next year, and when it's done, there will be 66 radio telescopes.

"The ALMA radio telescope has taken its first photograph of the Antennae Galaxies from the observatory in Chile (pictured)"
And one last, non-ALMA image. Discovery of the “Pigtail” Molecular Cloud~love the name (but found a typo in the article...different from the submitted translation...grrrrrr moment for the evening!)

For the curious, and only those who've finished at least 1 1/2 of the currently unstamped shelves, you can find more info here (and cupcakes if you spot the grammatical error!~in the article, not my post~long day & a couple of glasses of wine make those a forgivable given!).

Whoops...that's the sun after moon took a few bites! *wink*

○Book: Skinwalker by Faith Hunter
○Shelf: Kick-Ass-Heroine
○Completed: 9.20.12
○Rating: *****
○Review: I liked this book a lot. The main character is a native american skinwalker, so I was comparing this story to Patricia Brigg's Mercy Thompson series. This book was a lot darker, the vampires were not as friendly. I didn't care for the dialogue when she was in skinwalker form, but that's alright. I still gave it 5 stars!

Suzanne Hot Dog I was hoping that book would be good! I was waiting to see what you thought of it before I added to my extreme list of TBR's lol

I'm going to pick Sparks Fly by Katie MacAlister. She's teetered on my not-so-favorite for the last few books I've read, but hopefully I'll enjoy this one none-the-less. :)

Shelf #2 ~ 9/23/12: 'Favorite Author'
DIRECT LINK: This is a personal shelf, not a Goodreads shelf.

FlibBityFLooB I have Sparks Fly on my shelf waiting as well. One day I will get to it hopefully. Some days I look at my shelves and am just ashamed having all these books unread and constantly picking up more but can't help myself! LOL

Book Read = A Sliver of Shadow by Allison Pang
Date Finished = 9/23/12
Rating = ★★★★½
Basic Review
I had picked this one up and started reading it and put it back down several times over the last few months. I was having a bit of trouble getting back into the storyline. However, I was determined this time around -- and once I got past the first 50 pages, I couldn't stop reading until I finished the book this evening at 1am. :)
I loved the first book in this series for its uniqueness. This one wasn't quite as fun as the first one, but I still really enjoyed it. It definitely ended in a cliff-hanger! I'm glad to see book 3 in the series comes out next month, so I won't have long to wait.
There was a love-triangle in this one. I have a long-triangle group on goodreads. I normally love that kind of thing. However, I wasn't crazy about it in this story. I think the author was after my own heart though, because she (view spoiler) . I know it didn't quite go down as much as my dirty mind would have liked, but you never know how things will pan out in the future ;)

And Flib glad you liked Sliver, I must get to it soon so I haven't read the review yet, LOL.

BTW: "Giant molecular clouds in this region are orbit around the Galactic center". Found an error, do I get cupcakes?!?! ;) Nevermind, I'm passing out strawberry filled croissants to start off the week, better than cupcakes. Enjoy!

It's been a busy weekend, went to an out of town wedding yesterday, then to see Book of Mormon (musical) today. Both very fun, but now exhausted. Checking in quickly before heading off for an early night in.
I need to read A Sliver of Shadow at some point, thought the first one was hilarious. Love triangles usually aren't my thing, but Pang's writing cracks me up.
Favorite author...either

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin
Shelf: Free Space
Date finished: 9/24/12
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:
Well. Well. Provocative on many levels. Thought provoking. Difficult at times. Thrilling and angering. Frustrating.
Parts of this book I loved. Parts I hated. Parts were exciting, others were disturbing. With the length, I guess that's not unexpected. I've had friends, especially one die-hard fantasy guy, telling me I HAVE to read this. Now I have. It is not in my top ten, but I will probably read the next ones (bought it as a bundle, so have three more, more than 3000 pages left). I'm not sure whether that last thought fills me with joy or trepidation (2013 Mt. TBR challenge will probably see #2!)
Unless you've been living under a rock (and I felt like I was before the internet in regards to Western Culture...which is why I NEVER heard of this until more than a decade after it was published), you know this is a series with die-hard fans that has been turned into an HBO series (which I haven't seen at all). It's very broad-scale. The action moves forward via narration of various characters. I enjoyed some more than others, but like almost everyone else says, there is no one character that I love. At times, I find it hard to even like them (hey, that's true in RL, too, but I do want something different when I take a break from it).
Basically, this is a medieval world. People crave power. Some value honor more. Lots of people die. Many of the characters are too young in our world view to be doing what they're doing. But, it is a fascinating story. However, it seems to just be the setting for the next, and the next. Considering the speed the books come out, I'll also be taking my time with it.
**Have read what I wrote a couple of times...lol, I do not hate the book, but I do not love it. I want to give it two stars, five stars and zero...so I settled for my usual four. It's rather a difficult book to pin down, and that says something for it in the end.

Should move on and pick up this week's book, but not sure it's "light" enough for what I need next...think I'll go update challenges, get some sleep...then decide!

Decided on Widow's Web for this week. Was excited to find it at the library!
I decided that our virtual caloric intake goes up exponentially with bingo rounds, lol.

The food looks yummy ya'll! LOL Nites all! (Zzzzzzz)

You now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'kick-ass-heroine'.
[Your updated BINGO card can be viewed on page 1]
Good Job!! :D

Thank you! LOL...it does feel like a mini-marathon! But...having left the book 24 hours ago, actually found myself almost dipping into #2!
NO!!!!!! Two library books and this week's shelf (though not in that order!) to read & enjoy first! (Minus the angst, I hope!)

..."
Hope you're all better now, and no worries about that!!!

I think that one is going to be my Free Space after I read Silver Borne!!

Same here! The huge massive book stares at me from my bedstand!!

Suzanne the only one I was unsure of was what you want me to put down for your Free Read sweets. Was it River Marked by Patricia Briggs ?
I probably wont be able to get back to do another update until Thursday or Friday because I am having some internet problems...just didn't want you sweet ladies thinking I had skipped out on you. (hugs)
Until then Happy Reading and keep up the yummy food posts! LOL

I'll take some of those yummy looking strawberry croissants and share my piña colada ice cream with everyone.
Glad your feeling better too Jennifer! :D

Riveted by Meljean Brook
Shelf: Favorite Author
Date finished: 9/26/12
Rating: ★★★★★
Thoughts:
Two years ago, in an anthology (Burning Up) I pre-ordered because I was dying to read another author's story, I read Here There Be Monsters. I had liked Meljean Brook's The Guardians, but it wasn't on my "have-to-be-reading-right-NOW" list. This short changed it. I love the steampunk world she has created, and the characters grab my interest completely.
So, I was thrilled to (finally) get Riveted! How nice that Mr. R cooperated so I could dive into it as soon as I finished up the current read at that time!
Annika Fridasdotter left her all-female home five years ago to search for her sister who had taken the blame for something Annika did and been exiled. Annika had unwittingly put her village at risk of "discovery", so now she's on a quest to bring her sister home. She is working as an engineer on the airship, Phaeton. She's a very strong character, and not so unusual within her culture, but quite unexpected in the wider world.
David Kentewess steps forward to offer her aid of a different, unexpected sort when she had trouble with an officious port officer, and she later finds him to be a passenger on the Phaeton. He has been touched by tragedy, but come through it with a very sensible, livable outlook on life, despite some (minor) bitterness (no angsty hero). That tragedy is why he initially honed in on Annika, but not the only reason his interest continued. Bit by tantalizing bit, we learn more about these two as they set off for Iceland, and their attraction slowly heats up.
Airships, mechanical dogs, trolls, outrageous fashion, and lots of action...very fun! Pre-ordering the next, as soon as I can!

Book: one grave at a time by jeanine frost
Shelf: favourite author
Finished: 27/9/12
Stars: 4 & 1/2
Review:
Although I powered through this one I didn't quite enough it as much as the previous. The characters didn't interact as well and I feel it was a little drawn out. But in saying that the ending was a little rushed. This was also a bit of a step back for cat in terms of her developing vampiric powers.

I think that one is going to be my Free Space a..."
The downside of Bingo is seeing people read the Mercy series. I'm totally jealous because they fit on soooo many shelves and I've already read them :( I'm so overdue for a re-read.
It's been a busy work week, still working on my book. I gotta say, it's my least favorite of the series so far. I love Gin but the recaps are starting to get to me.
