Nici - Can you please edit your previous post with your rating and review and just add that info? The way the submission works, we need to include links to reviews and we shouldn't have the review in two places. There are almost 100 players in this game so we need to make it as easy as possible for the mods to give us the stamps!

Thanks!

It's up to you, Adele. I think it's best to read the Free Space as soon as possible but that's me. ;)

D.G. | 2752 comments I forgot to mention that I'm keeping track of our books read, etc. in post #8: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/1...

Just in case you're wondering, some bookcovers are 'empty' because I don't have the name of the book you're reading (and this is set up automatically so I need it for the time players provide their reads.;)

Insurgent (Divergent, #2) by Veronica Roth Insurgent, Veronica Roth, 9-22-12
Rating: 4 stars
Review: Note on the first book: I've read quite a few reviews from people who intensely disliked the first book, Divergent. Very good arguments were made and I agree with practically everything said: illogical world building, annoying aspects to Tris' character, etc. But, Karen's review puts in words better than I can why I loved it. All bad points aside, it was just plain fun to read and I couldn't put it down. I found myself struggling to stay awake into the wee hours of the morning just to finish it.

Reading Insurgent nearly reached that same level of enjoyment and fun. It picks up right after the events of Divergent. Dauntless is split, factions are at war and Tris is dealing with guilt over her own actions during the battle,(view spoiler). Over the course of the book we get to see a little more of the other factions and even the factionless. There are quite a few hints throughout to a big secret kept by Abnegation and coveted by Erudite. So many in fact that the nature of the big twist at the end wasn't really a shock after all. The details were in question (view spoiler), but the overall picture (view spoiler) was easily deduced.

Did the illogic and annoying characteristics carry over from the first book? Probably, but you'll have to ask someone else about those. Once again I was so swept up in the action and unfolding events, that I was able to pretty much ignore any inconsistency that came along. I'll definitely be reading the third book; I still want to know what happens next.

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments I'm still trying to make up my mind about the favorite author book. I have a new book from July Garwood, but it isn't a paranormal. I may go with The Next Always (Inn BoonsBoro, #1) by Nora Roberts . I'll decide after I finish my current read and let you know in the morning.

And D.G., are you going to have any free time at all??? I signed up this morning for Hearts and Tears over on RRRC and couldn't help wondering when you'll find the time to actually read. LOL

message 110: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments LOL, Daffodil. Good question that. Specially considering that 3 people were laid off in my department (there are only two of us left) and I started writing reviews for a blog!

Anyhow, H&T shouldn't be difficult to manage. There's really nothing to keep track except for answering questions and adding people to the player's list. I have a spreadsheet for the player's list so it's not that difficult to update it (it creates the links automatically).

D.G. | 2752 comments Daffodil wrote: "I have a new book from July Garwood, but it isn't a paranormal. "

The book doesn't have to be paranormal. As long as it's a favorite author of yours, you're good to go!

Thanks. I know, but unless I'm desperate for a book to fit a category, I try to go for paranormals first. And favorite author shouldn't make me desperate, darn it! LOL.

I had a few more options than I realized though. I went through my library basket last night and had forgotten I'd checked out Crystal Gardens by Amanda Quick & Touch of Power (Healer, #1) by Maria V. Snyder . Since Crystal Gardens is due sooner, I started it.

I'm desperate for another bookstore trip to Champaign. I've searched WM and local stores and still haven't found any copies of Chasing Magic (Downside Ghosts, #5) by Stacia Kane or Gunmetal Magic (Kate Daniels World, #1) by Ilona Andrews . I also miss being able to spend a few hours just browsing through the shelves and finding new authors. I'm going to cave soon and go ahead and order a few things online instead.

message 118: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments I'm bummed out...I woke up at 5am this morning and the first I did was to check out if Rapture (The Fallen Angels, #4) by J.R. Ward was on Audible...and it wasn't!

message 119: by Daffodil (new)

Daffodil (daffodil--ripcranberry) | 2098 comments Sorry D.G., I got a little lost in the ramble on that post. Yes I'm reading Crystal Gardens for my favorite author.

Also sorry to hear your book isn't on Audible yet. :(

message 124: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Nici wrote: "what do you do while listening to the books?"

I listen during my commute, while I'm walking in the streets and exercising. I can also listen while doing clerical work (nothing that engages the brain) or doing chores at home.

Sometimes if I'm into a book a lot, then I'll listen in bed just before going to sleep, that way I can keep my eyes closed. I just have to be careful not to fall sleep!

message 125: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments OMG! They've messed up the audio for Rapture! It's so freaking fast that it's difficult to follow what's going on!

message 126: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 2752 comments Given the disaster that it's the narration for Rapture, I'm switching my Favorite author choice to The Mystery of the Blue Train (Hercule Poirot, #6) by Agatha Christie from my favoritest author ever (Agatha Christie.) This is a re-read in audio but I probably read that book 15 years or so ago so I don't remember nothing. :)

D.G. | 2752 comments Ahh Adele! So sorry about that! Hopefully you're baby gets better. And don't worry about not keeping pace...the important thing is to chat and to hopefully catch up in the last weeks. :)

In my last group, we made sure to read each book every book - we had time and/or were really anal! - and at the end our shelf didn't come up so we weren't in contention. So there's luck involved too!

The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie

Title/Author:
The Mystery of the Blue Train by Agatha Christie
Read for shelf: *Favorite Author
Date finished: Sep 29
Rating: ★★★★

I'm a big Agatha Christie fan and I'm re-reading two of her most famous series in audio: Hercule Poirot & Miss Marple. I don't remember when I read this one - it may have been in Spanish more than 15 years ago - but I seemed to have enjoyed it better this time around, at least judging by the rating. Maybe it was the audio, which added a definite atmosphere.

It took a while to set the stage for this - the murder occurred around 1/3 of the book in - so the beginning is a bit boring but it gets interesting quickly. I didn't remember much of the crime but thought it was very clever.

Oh no! That's a horrible childhood illness (I still remember the itching & scratching), and not much fun for the mum either! Good Luck Adele!

What's Left of Me (The Hybrid Chronicles, #1) by Kat Zhang

Title/Author:
What's Left of Me by Kat Zhang
Read for shelf: Free Space
Date finished: Sep 30
Rating: ★★★★

What’s Left of Me is a book with no easy answers. It takes The Host to the next level but without an obvious solution. I was very conflicted as I read along because I could understand everybody’s point of view. I felt for Eva, who for all intents and purposes is a vegetable with absolutely no say in the actions of her body - I’d hyperventilate just thinking of not being able to move. I felt bad for Addie, who’s had one instance of privacy in her life - having to account for my actions every minute of every day would drive me bunkers. I felt bad for the parents, who wanted the best for their children but had to make a terrible decision.

I don't know how this will end up but I definitely want to find out.
