To quote from the originating post:
We'd like to try to track discussions – topics, quotes, status-updates, etc. – by chapter. If you post a quote from the book you're reading, we want to know where the quote is from. This will make for more lively discussions tied contextually to when events occur within the book.

Jessica | 66 comments 1Q84 is done. Quite clumsy and chunky labelling. I'll be willing to edit if there's a better way to do it.

Phil (notacat) | 37 comments Lindsey wrote: "That means the whole HP series is done for the hardcover editions."

I've been doing the UK paperback editions because that's what I had to hand, and I happen to know (from long, bitter experience ;-) that the pagination is not the same in UK and US editions, and it seems that the US editions are turning up as "default" (at least, my reviews seem to have been moved to those at some point...). Unless anybody objects mightily, I'll make sure those are complete too, work permitting.

I'm assuming that this difference in pagination between editions is pretty much the reason for this exercise: it works much better to attribute a quotation or citation to a chapter, which will remain constant across editions, rather than try for a specific page, against which you would have to also specify the edition and hope that your intended audience have the same.

Violetta | 477 comments I was working on The life of pi, the second most popular edition, and every time I tried entering "Part One: Toronto and Pondicherry: Chapter 1", it reverts to simply "Chapter 1" after saving. No error message; just the opposite in fact.

Is anyone else having this issue? Parts Two and Three remain as I entered them, just Part One reverts.

As a secondary question, I need some guidance. The section labelled Part One actually starts on page 1, and chapter one starts on page 3. Part Two and Part Three have the same situation. Should I have made them into separate chapter headings and then just renamed the ones that follow manually? Meaning, of the 100 chapters, should I have written 103 chapters, then marked three of them as sections with unique page numbers and manually renamed the remaining 100 chapters?

The system refused to let me edit an individual line after the record was saved, but I could add a new line and delete the old one.

Violetta | 477 comments thanks mlady, I'll give that a try.

UPDATE: It worked to add a new line and delete the incorrect listing. Plus I saw that the system autosorts by page number so I didn't have to do any re-labeling after the fact :)

Voula (otl1987) (otl1987) I added this edition of a Game of Thrones: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/11...

The problem I have, is that I started naming the chapters "Chapter 1 - .... " instead of "Chapter 1: ...." and now I can't change it. How can I do it?

Edit
I started changing it by deleting the old ones and creating new ones, but is there another way? Can this be fixed?

Abcdarian | 26579 comments The Help is done. The chapters are under speakers' names, but if there is more than one in a row the name is not repeated in the book. I included them each time in [brackets]. Hope this is suitable.

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) | 32 comments I did Inheritance but there were two chapters that had special characters. Wasn't sure how they render in your database so I left them as regular characters. If you want me to change them I will be happy to I just need to know how. Chapters were Thardsvergundnzmal and Firnen

Mary Beth (lifelovebooks) | 32 comments Did Matched default edition.

Did City of Glass default edition - this is one of those that had parts and chapters, each with their own titles. The parts begin on their own pages and have writing on them. I did like this - Part One Sparks Fly Upward, Chapter 1 The Portal and Part One, Chapter 2 The Demon Towers of Alicante. I didn't include the epigraph - should we?

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

Did City of Ashes, the default edition. I accidentally clicked on "set as default for work" - I hope that's okay since I can't find a way to undo it.

Gryph Daley | 128 comments Could we please get an updated list, or updates on the original list strike-throughs, so that we know which books still need metadata completed?

message 121: by Michael (last edited Sep 30, 2012 01:56PM) (new)

Michael | 254 comments Is it appropriate to use the Chapter Headings metadata to add details of short stories in an anthology? I think that would be useful information.

If this is appropriate, then the sooner it's possible to link a chapter/short story to an author, the better (where the book is a collection of stories by different authors, of course).

Michael | 254 comments Patrick wrote: "For Roman numeral chapters (like an introduction), let's use page 0 for that. It should work."

What about books that have a preface, foreword and an introduction, all in Roman numerals? We can't number them all as "0" can we?

I have this edition of The Hobbit or There and Back Again and it has

Preface: v
Contents: xv
Illustrations: xvii
Note on the Text: xix

Arguably, the contents and list of illustrations may not need recording, but surely both the preface and Note on the Text should be?

A. Yeah, that's what I said too. The list hasn't been updated for a long time and I stoped doing other books because no one tells me if they are ok or not.
B. The GR stuff wants to see if it will have a positive effect on the way GR works before opening the option for all the books.

Greetings Patrick :)

Firstly, thanks for updating the list. Also, the links for some books return "page not found" errors:

A Storm of Swords (ASoIaF #3)
A Dance with Dragons (AOsIaF #5)

Unfortunately, I have non-default editions for many of the other books in the list, so I haven't updated the chapter meta-data. Should I proceed with my non-default editions?

Voula (otl1987) (otl1987) Patrick wrote: "Ok, think I got all of the default editions that have been updated. Let me know if I missed yours. Thanks for working on this!"

Welcome back!
Will the other editions (not the default) work as well? For example I've already done "a game of thrones" and "a clash of kings"....
And how will this be used exactly?

message 131: by Phil (new)

Phil (notacat) | 37 comments I thought we had settled that it would help to do this for any editions we have to hand, because the entire point of the exercise is that pagination varies from edition to edition and this will enable us to link citations to specific parts of a book in an edition-blind fashion.

Gryph Daley | 128 comments Phil wrote: "I thought we had settled that it would help to do this for any editions we have to hand, because the entire point of the exercise is that pagination varies from edition to edition and this will ena..."

Greetings Phil,

As I understand the original request and the mechanics of the database, current chapter meta-data is edition dependent. Meaning that entries we make would not necessarily propagate to other editions that have been combined with the default.

I would certainly like some clarification on that though :)

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 535 comments Patrick, my group is doing a read of To Ride Hell's Chasm. I was *hoping* if you would be willing to open chapter metadata for this book since we are discussing it right now.
