Kristina Simon (kristinasimon) | 11204 comments 25.8 -- Mstan's task: The Long, the Short, and the Diacritical

Read two books for this task. You can choose A+B, B+C or A+C, but not the same option twice.

*Goodreads will be used to determine which category the author's name belongs to, so if his/her full name is entered on Goodreads even if he/she is commonly known by his/her initials, (B) wouldn't work. Please ensure that the Goodreads page for the book you read and link to in your post contains the necessary features of the author's name.

A - Read a book by an author who has a LAST name which is at least 10 letters long -- e.g. Fyodor Dostoyevsky (11). All 10+ letters must come together with no other characters or spaces in between (so hyphenated names and names like Van Lustbader would not work).

B - Read a book by an author who uses at least one initial in his/her name, e.g. M.T. Anderson, S.J. Bolton or Matthew F. Jones.

C - Read a book by an author whose name contains a diacritical mark, e.g. Junot Díaz, Benjamin Alire Sáenz, Åke Edwardson, Maj Sjöwall, Zoë Ferraris

Required: State which options you chose when you post.

mstan | 868 comments For Option B, the 10 letters must come together, with no other characters or spaces in between. For this reason, last names like 'van _____' would not work.

message 6: by Bea (new)

Bea What about names such as Eric Van Lustbader? Is the Van part of the last name or a middle name?

Sue (suetinge) | 1578 comments Perfect place for the new J. D. Robb which comes out next week.

Hi Bea, I was thinking more of 10 letters with no spaces or other characters in between. This would exclude hyphenated surnames and two-word last names. I will ask the mods to help me change the task description to clarify this.

Thanks for the quick response and help, Kristi!!

Marscha (mysterymb) | 429 comments Katie MacAlister would work for option A, right? Or is the fact that the name has two capitals a problem?

message 15: by Bea (last edited Sep 07, 2012 02:42AM) (new)

Bea Susan R. Sloan is my choice for B

Gabriel García Márquez will work for C

message 16: by mstan (new)

mstan | 868 comments Marscha, yes that would work.
Bea, both would work.

Happy reading!

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments One for A is Lesley Livingston

Chris (chrismd) | 1237 comments Too bad there isn't a one book option for this. I could use R.F. Delderfield

message 19: by Vi (new)

Vi | 184 comments Ben Aaronovitch and Franny Billingsley both would for Option A, right?

mstan | 868 comments Vi wrote: "Ben Aaronovitch and Franny Billingsley both would for Option A, right?"

Yes, either one works, but you would need a 'B' or 'C' book for your second book.

message 21: by Vi (new)

Vi | 184 comments Thanks! I'm just trying to have some choices. I have 3 authors lined up for Option B and 1 for Option C. I now end up having too many choices.

Hi Diane
I checked with the mods and they prefer to adhere to what is stated in the task description in post #1:

*Goodreads will be used to determine which category the author's name belongs to, so if his/her full name is entered on Goodreads even if he/she is commonly known by his/her initials, (B) wouldn't work. Please ensure that the Goodreads page for the book you read and link to in your post contains the necessary features of the author's name.

I tried amending Zoe Archer's name for you but since she is a GR author, only she can amend her own data. You would have to post on the GR librarians' group page to ask for help (or perhaps email the author?). Until her name is amended, any book of hers cannot be accepted for Option C.

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 891 comments mstan in her author's bio on goodreads it has the diacritical mark:

About this author
Zoë Archer is an award-winning romance author who thinks there's nothing sexier than a man in tall boots and a waistcoat. As a child, she never dreamed about being the rescued princess, but wanted to kick butt right beside the hero. She now applies her master's degrees in Literature and Fiction to creating butt-kicking heroines and heroes in tall boots. She is the author of the acclaimed BLADES OF THE ROSE series. December marks the beginning of her new paranormal historical romance series, THE HELLRAISERS. Zoë and her husband, fellow romance author Nico Rosso, live in Los Angeles. Please visit her on the Web at http://www.zoearcherbooks.com/

Will that count?

Hi Sassafrass, no that won't work because of this instruction: "Please ensure that the Goodreads page for the book you read and link to in your post contains the necessary features of the author's name."

message 25: by Sassafrass (new)

Sassafrass (sass-a-frass) | 891 comments Ahh, ok, got it. thanks for clearing it up.

message 26: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 8946 comments and unfortunately, since she is a GR author it can't be fixed either - diacretics keep me majorly busy fixing profiles here

message 27: by Vi (new)

Vi | 184 comments I found an author with a diacritical mark: Shana Abé. Yay!

Robin (Saturndoo) (robinsaturndoo) Alyson Noel also has a diacritical mark in her name but they aren't used here on GR....but if you look at her book covers the marks are there. So I am assuming from what I've read, we can't use her books for this task either :(

That's right Robin - it's the same situation as with Zoe Archer. Sorry about that.
