Count Off Challenge
I think adding to the challenge is fun =D. Doing the X new or X used was a neat idea as well. N or U eep, gotta check on that. Good challenge though Kate.
You don't have to read "U" or "N" book titles for the challenge. Those just give you double page counts. I figured as anyone taking part in the monthly challenge or read the month challenge, we'd all have at least one "N" book we could double. BJ - How about the library? Then you don't have to buy one.
OKay, went book shopping today for my reward books. I took the 5 used book option. Tight budget, so all were 1 penny books plus shipping but one. I also got the oldest book off my amazon.com wish list which is 4 years old. I bought:The Knight, the Knave and the Lady by Juliet Landon (Historical Romance)
A Charmed Life: Growing Up in Macbeth's Castle by Liza Campbell (Memoir)
The Chef's Choice by Kristin Hardy (Harlequin)
Deal Me In - Twenty of the Top Poker Players Share the Stories of How They Turned Pro by Stephen Johns (Non-Fiction)
Home Cooking A Writer in the Kitchen by Laurie Colwin (Memoir)
As you can see, I have very eclectic reading tastes

No - I was just giving you a hard time! **little shrug**
This is a really good challenge, and I'm ok if I can't find an 'N' book here, but I do need one for Read-the-Month AND for Romance Readers first task. I'll find something before November's done - just might not be in time for this one.
I think I do have at least one 'U' book.
United Nations Day Challenge. Runs Oct 24 - Nov 8. Total Pages Needed = 2009
Special Bonus: If the first letter of the title of the book starts with "U" or "N", take double credit for the books pages. Reward: 2 new or 4 used books.
Once Aboard the Eagle by Edward Hoch = 13 pages
Total = 13 pages
Special Bonus: If the first letter of the title of the book starts with "U" or "N", take double credit for the books pages. Reward: 2 new or 4 used books. Rules claification: As per usual challenge rules, "A", "And", and "The" won't count.
So "(The) Nightmare" would qualify as an "N" titled book.

Well, Kate, I didn't stay up till 2 am to finish my book, but it was very close to midnight, and that's like 2 am to these old bones! Thanks for pushing this book -295 pp. (351-56 pp. I read before end of last challenge) Poison Study
And Yelena gave me the 'Y' character I needed to finish my A-Z Characters!
Hmm, Jane - you've just given me an idea - going to check my classics for short stories to fit those letters
Your welcome. I take it you really liked it then BJ. I know Jane said she's reading it so quickly, she's not sure she can hold off reading the next in the series for a week as she had it counting toward Nov challenges. I'm getting ready to start the follow-on Glass series. It's been a long time since I liked a series this much. Not since Nancy Atherton's Aunt Dimity series or the Harry Potter books. As for A-Z characters - Yelena is your Y. Valek for V. By book 2 you find out Yelena's last name is Zaltana for Z. Her brother is Lief Zaltana. A mentor is Irys for I. I used the series for Y, Z, and I as I already had a V. May reread them next year for next year's male and female A-Z character challenge. I'm glad they are giving us a year for the A-Z challenges next year as the A-Z character is going to be much harder dividing it up by sex. Thankfully, they aren't also dividing it up by first name and last name as well as by sex. lol At least we can cross challenge the book so that for instance for Poison Study you can take the Y for Yelena on one list and the V for Valek on the other from the same book. :)

An order of execution hangs over her head should she ever return to Ixia. But her true love, Valek, quickly learns that an assassin has taken it upon himself to make sure Yelena doesn’t reach her destination…. I'm trying to finish the last books for my October challenges, so this is the only 'N' book I've read so far:
12 pp. x 2 = 24 pp.: The Nightingale and the Rose by Oscar Wilde
394 pp.: Rapture by Jacquelyn Frank 4*
Added to:
214 pp.(243-29 pp. read before end of last challenge): Ceremony 3.5*
295 pp. (351-56 pp. I read before end of last challenge) Poison Study 4.5*
Total Pages = 927
I still have one book to go for Oct challenges but not sure if I'll get to it or not yet. I had to bake 48 Halloween cupcakes for my son's school party tomorrow plus a pie I baked my Dad today as a peace offering since his leaf blower died while in my possession. I have one pie crust left so need to bake a pumpkin pie tomorrow and tomorrow my middle son gets braces put on his teeth. Can't forget Halloween this weekend... so not sure where in here I'll manage to start and finish an entire book. lol
Oh wow Kate that's a full plate! My decisions pretty much rack up to which book should I start next, does it fit a challenge or will it earn me credit on PBS [lol:].
The book I choose off a birthday shelf to read, was Storm Glass, the first book in the followup to the Study series. I'm sure once I pick it up, I'll read until it's finished. I havn't had that kinda reading time, so havn't started it yet.

Sorry, I guess I mentioned it everywhere but here! I liked it a lot, and I'm waiting for Magic Study to arrive at the library. Thanks again for the rec!
Here's the beginning of the review I wrote:
"This book was every bit as good as a friend said. To emphasize how good - I generally do not enjoy books written in the first person, but this is one story that had to be told that way..."
and the rest of the review is here:

I'm glad you liked it BJ. Each book is totally different but very good. I'm sure you'll enjoy the rest of the series. :)

Ransom by Julie Garwood = 390 pages
Total = 403 pages
I read this in one day. I loved Julie Garwood's The Secret so much over the last decade or so I've read it at least 5 times. I didn't know til I was looking at a bday shelf and saw that it was listed as series: Medieval #1. Ransom is #2 (I had it but hadn't read it yet.) Shadow Music is #3. I'm a bit surprised it was a sequel when you consider that The Secret was written in 1992, Ransom in 1999, and Shadow Music in 2007.

Can you believe I hadn't claimed my reward for CHERRY BLOSSOM TREE CHALLENGE? : (2 NEW -OR- 4 USED) I was so busy trying to finish the October challenges, I stayed away from book shopping. So today I let my fingers do the shopping and bought 2 audiobooks, both by Elizabeth Peters: The Mummy Case and Lion in the Valley. My hubby and I both love the Amelia Peabody series, so it's something we can talk about. For Kate's challenge, I think I'll take a trip to my UBS next week and see if I can find 4 books from my list. Great Challenge BJ. Some of these I've read, most I havn't. The Time Travel books that readily come to mind are (in case anyone needs help finding any):Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. (Or any in the series)
The Man Who Folded Himself by David Gerrold (Took me just over 20 years after I first read it to find a copy of this. Had to wait til they reprinted it.)
A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. I highly recommend this one as long as you don't read the special edition version. (She went back and added about 50 pages to add an element about alcoholism that spoils an otherwise great book.)
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger
Time and Again 2-in-1 - Time Was\Times Change by Nora Roberts
The Dark Highlander by Karen Marie Moning (An Entire Series I discovered when I typed in "Time Travel Romance" into Amazon.com)
Return to Summerhouse by Jude Deveraux
Legend by Jude Deveraux
Remembrance by Jude Deveraux
Pirates by Linda Lael Miller
hhhmmmm I have 8 of the 9 books above and have only read 3 of them.
