Nothing But Reading Challenges discussion

Sometimes I wonder how some books get published, it's sad really.

Yeah, which leads to the questions of what was the author thinking and what is wrong with them to think that book was a good idea.

IDK, I think you're right. If I were an editor I'd pull my hair out.

I wouldn't want to be an editor for several reasons. One, I wouldn't be able to hurt someone's feelings if their work was utter crap. And I wouldn't want my name attached to said crap. Also, as much as I love correct grammar and punctuation, working with it endlessly might make me go a bit batty. The deadlines would kill me as well. I'm not so good with those. ^_~

Lacy, I think most books don't even get put in front of a proper editor. I really wonder. I think most publishers/agents tell the author to go over it several times themselves and maybe share it with some trusted friends. Editors really only work on high profile books/authors/genres. At least that's what I think.

I don't know about pulling my hair out, but I probably would be forced to tell someone that they are nuts.

Lauren, I also found The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo difficult to get into at first, but I was so glad I stayed with it; the next two books continue with Lisbeth's story, and it's great.

Here's my review of TGWtDT - it shows what my hangup was, and how much I liked the rest of the book.

The Lost Recipe for Happiness was my first book by O'Neal. It has a romance interwoven into the story, but it's basically a story of survival, and knowing when to finally let go of what might have been so you can embrace what might be even better. It's really a heart-wrenching story but I liked it a lot and gave it 4*

Books: A Memoir is about Larry McMurtry's other life as an antiquarian book dealer over a 35-year period. He refers briefly to his books and screenplays, but mainly in the context of how the money from those allowed him to search for and buy rare books - the man loves books and reading. I gave it 3* - it was interesting but not compelling.
